3 Frightfully Good Halloween Cocktails To Make At Home

Level up your Halloween celebration at home with themed cocktails that are even more creative than your costume. From scary to scrumptious, we’ve gathered some frightfully good options for you to sip on this spooky season.

1. Vampire Cocktail

If you like your Halloween extra gory, the Self Proclaimed Foodie’s Vampire Cocktail is the drink for you. This creative concoction features a syringe filled with raspberry puree, which looks chillingly similar to blood!

Make the “blood” ahead of time by blending raspberries and then straining them to remove the seeds. Then, heat the puree in a saucepan with sugar for about ten minutes to sweeten and darken the fruit. Transfer the puree to a container and store in the refrigerator to chill.

When you’re ready to whip up this spooktacular cocktail, grab a bottle of vodka and amaretto from your bar cabinets. Add your spirits to a shaker with ice, pour them into a chilled glass, and stir in club soda and orange juice. Top your cocktail off with a blood-filled syringe for the final (and frightening) touch.

2. Pumpkin Spice White Russian

If you put pumpkin spice on everything this time of year, you’ll scream for this fall-inspired White Russian recipe. According to Country Living, all you need for this latte-like libation is your favorite coffee liqueur, vodka, pumpkin pie spice, and heavy cream.

This creamy cocktail is to die for just as is — but add on the recommended honey rim dipped in gingersnap cookie crumbs, and you can just close the coffin door. We recommend enjoying this sweet treat with a cozy blanket while watching your favorite scary movie in the TV room.

3. Blood Orange Punch

Punches are great for small gatherings, because they’re simple to throw together and they double as decor. This Blood Orange Punch ticks both boxes with only four ingredients and its deep red color. We also love any excuse to pop a bottle of prosecco from our wine storage cabinet, and this punch is extra bubbly.

Whether Halloween is just you and your boo this year or you’ll be entertaining some family members in the backyard, you can whip up a batch of this quick and devilishly delicious drink. You’ll need a bottle of campari and a bottle of sweet vermouth from your bar cabinets, as well as five blood oranges (four for juicing and one for garnishing). Don’t forget those two bottles of prosecco you’ve been saving in your wine storage cabinet. In a large bowl, stir in the campari, sweet vermouth and orange juice. Then add in your prosecco, orange slices, and ice cubes, and serve yourself a glass of this bewitching beverage.

Here’s to a frightfully good Halloween!

Tiered Pumpkin Spice Cake

Move over basic pumpkin pie! This spectacular cake features three tiers topped with Honey and Spice Buttercreamfrosting, and we imagine it would look absolutely stunning atop your kitchen island on Thanksgiving Day. Pumpkin Spice Cake gets its fall flavors from pumpkin pureé, nutmeg, and ground cinnamon from your spice rack. For the recipe from Country Living, click here.

Pumpkin Spice Blondies

What’s better than a brownie? Pumpkin Spice Blondies! Dense and delicious, this dessert bar pairs pumpkin and spice with chocolate chips, for the perfect cool-weather combo. Of course, you’ll need a few more ingredients from your refrigerator and kitchen pantry cabinet, like butter, eggs, brown sugar, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and all-purpose flour. Click here for the complete recipe from Delish.

Pumpkin Spice Cookies

Cookies are tasty any time of year, but soft and buttery Pumpkin Spice Cookies steal the show come autumn. 4 Fabulous Fall Fruit Cobblers And Crisps

Warm fruit cobblers and crisps are a perfect way to enjoy the bounty of seasonal fall produce.

Unlike a traditional pie, cobblers and crisps feature a crumbled topping (made of oats, sugar and spices), homemade shortcake biscuits, or a cake batter crust.

There’s no need to visit a country bakery or fall festival stand when you can easily make a scrumptious fruit cobbler or crisp at home, with fresh, wholesome ingredients from your kitchen pantry cabinet. If this sounds heavenly to you, here are a few fabulous recipes to try this fall!

Apple Cranberry Crisp

This delightfully simple recipe from Better Homes and Gardens lets cranberries and apples shine. Two fall favorites, these fresh fruits can be a tad on the tart side, but the crunchy oat, cinnamon and brown sugar topping adds just the right amount of sweetness. For the recipe from BHG, click here. While fresh fruit generally makes cobblers and crisps healthier than most desserts, this one is also on the lighter side at just 213 calories per serving!

Pear Cobbler

Pears are harvested in the fall, and come in a variety of shapes and textures, but firmer varieties like Bosc, Anjou, or Asian pears are most suited for baking in a crisp. This easy Pear Crisp recipe from The Spruce Eats has a buttery cake batter crust, and you can mix and match whichever pears you prefer. Once baked, this cobbler can sit at room temperature on the kitchen island for two days or in the refrigerator for five days — but we bet it won’t be around that long! Click here for the recipe from The Spruce Eats.

Pineapple Ginger Crisp

Pineapples are in season year-round, but when paired with freshly grated ginger and a crumbled topping of old-fashioned oats, brown sugar, and nutmeg from your spice rack, you’ll have the perfect sweet and spicy cobbler to welcome fall. This recipe from Fine Cooking is easy to make and bakes up bubbly brown in just 20 minutes. Click herefor the instructions and ingredients you will need from your kitchen pantry cabinet.

Cherry Cobbler

With sweet cherries, vanilla and almond extract, and warm cinnamon, Bon Appétit’s Cherry Cobbler is sure to be a fall favorite. Topped with shortcake biscuits, this delicious dessert takes a bit more work than the others, but it is well worth the effort when you have a gorgeous cherry cobbler sitting on your kitchen countertop. To get the recipe, click here.

Dream kitchens are meant to be filled with the warm aroma of freshly baked desserts come autumn, whether it’s a pie, cobbler or crisp cooling on the kitchen island or in a bowl topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Which one are you most excited to try?

3 Grown Up Granita Recipes To Make This Summer

If you’re looking for a way to beat the heat, why not head to the kitchen for a granita. This semi-frozen Italian dessert originated on the island of Sicily, off the sunny coast of the Mediterranean Sea. A granita gets its light, fluffy texture from scraping ice crystals with a fork during the freezing process. And the ingredients are as simple as can be — typically water, fresh fruit juice (or coffee) and sugar.

While a granita may sound like a grown-up version of a snow cone, it’s even better than you could imagine, especially when you add spirits from your bar cabinet into the mix. Thankfully, you don’t have to travel to Italy to try this amazing treat when you can make it right in your own kitchen! Here are a few of our favorite granita recipes to make this summer, plus easy-to-follow instructions for perfecting the freezer method.

The Freezer Method

Making a granita requires a bit of patience but is ultimately easy to accomplish. Simply mix your ingredients in a flat baking dish and place it in the freezer (tip: metal freezes quicker than tempered glass or ceramic). After about 30 minutes, remove the baking dish, scrape or break up the ice crystals with a fork, and return the baking dish to the freezer. Follow this process for two hours or until your granita reaches a coarse, slushy consistency. Scoop some into a glass, grab a spoon, and enjoy!

Lime Granita

Savoring a Lime Granita is a refreshing way to cool down on a sweltering summer day. This recipe features freshly squeezed lime juice plus lime zest for an extra touch of tartness. And don’t forget the sugar! If you don’t have time for the freezer method, you can also use an ice cream maker. For instructions from An Italian in My Kitchen, click here. If you’re over 21 and want to spike your summer dessert, tequila pairs nicely with lime.

Watermelon Granita

For this granita, puree chunks of seedless watermelon in a blender with freshly squeezed lime juice, and strain through a sieve. Sweeten to taste with simple syrup (typically a few tablespoons per cup will do). Nice additions to a Watermelon Granita include finely chopped, fresh mint leaves or a pinch of salt. For a light and refreshing adult twist, try this recipe from Skinnytaste with a splash of vodka or white rum from your bar cabinet.

Coffee Granita

If you want to chill with a caffeine boost, try this Granita di Caffè (Coffee Granita) from Italy Magazine. Brew espresso with filtered water from your refrigerator or kitchen sink and cool it to room temperature. Add simple syrup and begin the freezer method. Like your favorite Frappuchino, top your Coffee Granita with whipped cream before serving. To make this granita even more grown-up, just add coffee liqueur.

If you make a large batch and miraculously have some left, granitas can be stored in the freezer for several days covered with plastic wrap. When ready to serve, let the ice slightly melt on the kitchen island and scrape it with a fork to return the granita to the correct consistency.

4 Festive Twists On Classic Eggnog

Traditional eggnog is a holiday classic. This sweet drink made of eggs, nutmeg, milk, and sugar is spiked with bourbon, cognac, and rum for a winter cocktail that will warm your soul. While the original version is hands-down delicious, there are many eggnog variations that are equally as appetizing. Welcome some new traditions to your home bar this holiday season and stock your bar cabinets with ingredients to make these four festive twists on classic eggnog.

Spiced Chocolate Eggnog

Adding chocolate is always a good idea — this eggnog variation incorporates both bittersweet and milk chocolate. It gets its kick from cayenne pepper, but if you can’t handle the heat, just leave out this spicy ingredient. If your bar cabinets are already stocked for winter with brandy, and you’ve got plenty of spices in your kitchen, you may already have all of the ingredients for this chocolate eggnog recipe from Martha Stewart.

2 quarts whole milk

2 cups heavy cream

1 ¾ cups sugar

1 ¼ cups brandy

12 egg yolks

5 ounces bittersweet chocolate, melted

3 ounces milk chocolate, melted

4 cinnamon sticks

1 vanilla bean (seeds scraped and pods reserved)

whole nutmeg (optional garnish)

½ teaspoon coarse salt

sprinkle of cayenne pepper

For directions, click here.

Peppermint Eggnog Punch

Peppermint Ice Cream with candy cane

Peppermint is pretty much synonymous with the holidays, so we couldn’t resist this peppermint infused eggnog variety. Made with thick and creamy peppermint ice cream, this decadent drink from Better Homes & Gardens is the perfect dessert cocktail for your next party. Add an extra scoop of ice cream to your cup and make this a peppermint eggnog float.

1 quart peppermint ice cream

1 quart eggnog

1 cup rum

1 ¼ to 2 ½ cups ginger ale

additional peppermint ice cream or peppermint sticks (optional garnish)

For directions, click here.

Eggnog Latte

If your guests are in need of an after dinner pick-me-up, this eggnog latte is the perfect solution. Made with classic eggnog and a double shot of espresso, you get the familiar taste of “milk punch” plus a rich jolt of java. Simply warm your eggnog in a saucepan by whisking it over medium heat and then pour over your espresso.

4 cups milk

12 large egg yolks

1 cup sugar

1 cup heavy cream

½ cup bourbon

nutmeg

espresso (2 shots per 1 cup of eggnog)

Find the full eggnog recipe here and eggnog latte recipe here.

Italian Eggnog Martini

Christmas Eggnog martini cocktail

This recipe makes our favorite cozy cocktail dinner-party appropriate by adding some extra spices and serving it in a martini glass. Rather than the traditional bourbon, cognac, and rum, this eggnog variation uses amaretto and vodka. Garnishes of caramel syrup and a peppermint stick add some extra holiday flair. This Italian eggnog recipe from Betty Crocker might be our new favorite after-dinner drink for the holidays.

1 ounce amaretto

1 ounce vodka

2 ounces eggnog

maraschino cherries

cinnamon

brown sugar

caramel syrup

candy cane and cinnamon stick (optional garnish)

For directions, click here.

The 5 Best Culinary Herbs to Grow This Spring

Italian Basil

Italian Basil: Italian basil leaves are mildly sweet, and are perfect for soups and sauces (think tomato or pesto), or on top of pastas, omelets, pizza, poultry, and fish. Basil is a good source of fiber, and has anti-inflammatory properties. As a self-sustainable herb, it can grow inside or outside with water every other day. Plant seeds near a sunny window or greenhouse, and bring to a garden in the late spring or early summer. Or begin with a small starter plant. Basil grows rapidly, and can get stalky if you are not careful. After six weeks, pinch off the center shoot to prevent early flowering, and clip back the leaves regularly to encourage full, healthy growth throughout the summer.

ChivesChives: This fragrant herb belongs to the onion family and packs a versatile, flavorful punch. Chives contain vitamins that can boost your immune system, and can be chopped into almost anything from salads, eggs, cheese, potatoes, spreads, and sauces. Chives grow easily, even indoors with little light. Sow seeds in the spring a half an inch deep, in rows, and 12 inches apart. Once the seedlings appear, thin the rows to about 6 inches apart. You can also find chives as a starter plant in the early spring. Onion chives grow in clumps, and should be clipped from the outer edge, about a half-inch above the soil level, leaving plenty to restore the plant. While their rosy purple flowers are nice, your plant will produce more leaves if you pinch off the buds.

close-up of fresh dill leavesDill: Dill is not just for pickles! These seeds and leaves have a bitter, sharp taste, which is great in both dried and fresh form for foods like fish, soups, salads, meats, poultry, omelets, potatoes, and sandwiches. Dill is rich in antioxidants, including beta-carotene, and can also stop hiccups in their tracks. Direct sunlight and deep soil is the best environment for growing dill. Seeds flourish in the early spring in soil a quarter inch deep, with rows 9 inches apart. Water indoor plants a few times a week, and once a week if planting outside.

mintMint: Mint leaves have a refreshingly crisp taste — perfect when paired with brewed teas or as garnish for cold drinks. The main component of a mojito, mint is also used in sauces and jellies. Sprinkle raw leaves over meats or over side dishes for extra flavor. Loaded with nutrients like vitamin A, mint is a great breath freshener! Mint grows incredibly fast in the spring, and needs lots of watering to get established. It is a spreading plant that tends to grow over and around its surroundings. Overcome this issue by planting 4-6 inches apart, with boards or brinks 1 foot deep around the seedbeds, or grow them in large bottomless buckets within a garden. Better yet, give mint a pot of its own, and let it grow!

Parsley: This aromatic herb is loaded with nutrients like vitamins A and C, and mixes great into salads, soups, stews, casseroles, and omelets. Parsley is best when served fresh as a garnish with meats, fish, and onion dishes. It is easy to maintain, and doesn’t need much sunlight, and although it’s slower to grow than most, the result is well worth the wait. Sow seeds in spring for summer use, and replant midsummer for autumn and winter. First soak the seeds overnight and lay thinly about 9-10 inches apart.

Starting an herb garden is easy, healthy, and cost-effective. Stop buying expensive bunches of herbs at the local grocery and grow your own. For indoor gardens, you’ll need some organic potting mix, and a collection of small pots placed around the edges of your kitchen sink or windowsill — anywhere where sunlight can reach them. For outside gardens, use a large pot in a sunny location, or build a DIY wooden planter box for the best results. Then bask in the aroma and flavor as you watch your garden grow.

Designing A Kitchen For Entertaining

Entertaining Guests In The Kitchen

The kitchen is a common hub for entertaining guests — and for good reason. It’s as close to the food and drinks as you can get, has tons of countertop space for setting up appetizers, and is typically right next door to the dining and living room. But a kitchen doesn’t become a great place for entertaining on its own. The evolution starts with the floor plan and ends with what you do when your guests arrive.

Create Your Kitchen

A good kitchen design will of course be the foundation of your space and the key indicator to whether or not your kitchen is built for a party. Use Willow Lane Cabinetry’s free kitchen design service to help you create a floor plan that will fulfill your daily needs, and be the ideal design for entertaining your family and friends.

Give Your Guests Somewhere To Sit

While standing and chatting is all well and good, some guests will prefer to take a seat, and you won’t want them to have to leave the room to get comfortable. Tall bar stools are the perfect solution to position on the exterior of your countertop (if you have an open concept floor plan), or around your kitchen island. A breakfast table can also be transformed into a cozy corner with a tablecloth, some candles, and a plate full of treats.

Splurge On Technology

Don’t stop at those stainless steel appliances — there are so many more additions that will make your party the talk of the town. A wine cooler is obviously a must for keeping vino at just the right temperature (anyone who has had a slightly chilled glass of Cabernet knows what we’re talking about). Refrigerator drawers offer extra storage space for keeping food cool, and also help you organize dishes that are ready to be served. Likewise warming drawers make sure no appetizer or entrée is ever served cold again. Stop juggling between what’s in the oven, what’s on the stove, and what’s in the refrigerator. Refrigerator and warming drawers let you take your time organizing every course, and put you at ease knowing everything will be served as it should be.

Fall Back On Portable

Alexandria Natural Wood Top Wine Island in White – Willow Lane CabinetryYou don’t need to have a huge kitchen to have a good party. All you need is a few portable fixtures to extend your countertop space or build a bar area. A portable kitchen island, wine cart or bar, are all great accessories to have on hand when you’re hosting extra guests. They can be stowed away on regular days and brought out when you need them.

Set The Mood

Don’t assume that your guests will automatically have a good time just because you decide to throw a party. Make sure there is entertainment ready, whether it’s a flat screen TV mounted on the wall and playing the big game or a wireless speaker system streaming music. Having games on hand also never hurts, and can be a lifesaver if conversation takes a nasty political turn or two guests clearly aren’t getting along. Part of hosting a party is being a host; so remember to do everything possible to make sure each guest is having a good time.

Healthy Spring Slow Cooking

Pulled Chicken Sandwiches with Homemade Coleslaw

The weather is warming up, but that doesn’t mean you have to pack away the slow cooker. Just swap out those hearty stew and soup recipes for lighter fare! These healthy spring recipes feature fresh seasonal vegetables, and are perfect for an easy, breezy and delicious meal.

Pulled Chicken Sandwiches with Homemade Coleslaw

Traditionally made with pork shoulder (Boston butt), these sandwiches take a lighter twist with boneless, skinless chicken breasts. In a slow cooker set to high, season a family pack of chicken breasts with two teaspoons of salt, a teaspoon of pepper, a teaspoon of mustard powder, 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, and 1/3 cup of apple cider vinegar. Cook for four to six hours until done (chicken should reach an internal temperature of 165°). When thoroughly cooked, your chicken should shred easily using two forks in a crisscross motion.

Serve your pulled chicken on crusty Kaiser rolls cut lengthwise, topped with homemade coleslaw and a dollop of your favorite BBQ sauce. To make homemade coleslaw, finely chop raw carrots and a small head of green cabbage into thin ribbons. In a large bowl, whisk 1 cup of mayonnaise, 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and 2 tablespoons of sugar, and toss the dressing with the cabbage ribbons until well coated. Or try slices of fresh, seasonal pineapple instead of coleslaw!

Lasagna Primavera with Tomato Basil Sauce

Spring vegetablesSlow Cooker Lasagna Primavera with Tomato Basil Sauce like carrots, asparagus, sweet onions, zucchini, spinach, garlic, and peas pair perfectly with noodles, cheese, and a light tomato-based sauce. Start by whipping up a quick and simple tomato basil sauce on the stove top, in a medium saucepan. Melt 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium-low heat, and add a small, diced sweet onion. Cook until the onion begins to soften and turn clear, and then add a clove of fresh crushed garlic. Next, add a large can of crushed, organic tomatoes. Chiffonier a handful of fresh basil leaves to finish off your sauce, and simmer for 30 minutes.

In a bowl, combine a large container of ricotta cheese, ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese, and one and a half cups of shredded mozzarella cheese. On a cutting board, julienne zucchini, carrots, and asparagus and place in a separate bowl. Add sweet raw peas, and fresh baby spinach leaves.

Set your slow cooker to low, and coat the bottom with a thin drizzle of olive oil, and a large spoonful of homemade tomato basil sauce. Layer dry lasagna noodles (do not use the no-boil variety), your cheese mixture, and your veggie mixture. Add more sauce and repeat the layers until you reach to your desired thickness. Add one last layer of dry noodles and top with tomato basil sauce.

Cover and cook on the low heat setting for four to six hours, or until the noodles are tender. Add ½ cup of shredded mozzarella to the top of your lasagna, and serve with freshly grated Parmesan cheese.

After a busy spring day, it’s nice to come home to a delicious, easy, and healthy dinner the whole family can enjoy!
