3 Home Bar Brewing Tips For Beginners

You finally have an amazing home bar and have been brushing up on your mixology skills. Now is the time to take it to the next level by brewing your own beer. Before you begin, you will need to stock your bar cabinets with the necessary tools and provisions, and you will need to know a few things that will set you on the right path. Here are a few home bar brewing tips for beginners to help encourage and inspire your journey.

Learn the tools of the trade from the beer making veterans.

The American Homebrewers Association (AHA) offers simple steps to help you master the homebrewing process, including tutorials with topics that include small batch brewing and using specialty grains. You’ll also find some great homebrew recipes to try that include the four main ingredients in making beer — malt, hops, yeast and water. Here are the tools they recommend adding to your bar cabinets in order to brew at home:

  • Fermenter
  • Airlock & Bung
  • Brew Pot
  • Siphon/Tubing
  • Hydrometer
  • Unscented Dish Soap
  • Homebrew Sanitizers

You will also need a large liquid measuring cup, a strainer, spoons, and a calibrated thermometer that can withstand high temperatures. For more details on each of these items, click here

Do your research before diving in.

According to Popular Mechanics, most people spend around $200 on homebrewing equipment and ingredients. Nothing too fancy, but still quite an investment. In their recent article, How to Make Beer at Home, they go in-depth on the process, from sanitizing everything and creating a starter wort, to making the mash and adding the grain. They also discuss the boil, cooling and pitching, and  bottling your brew, as well as what to do if your first batch fails. It’s an insightful resource, but there are others as well. Before diving in head first, take the time to research, and connect with other homebrewers through online forums, groups and conventions.

Be Patient and stick with it.

Even with tried and true recipes, a wealth of research, and all the right equipment, there is always a learning curve when attempting to master a new skill or task. Homebrewing takes practice and mistakes will be made when trying to keep consistent temperatures and the occasional boil over. This is par for the course and even happens to experienced, professional brewers. Don’t get frustrated and don’t give up. Instead, be patient and stick with it. Once you sip your first success, you will be glad you did.

Know that you have some tips to get started, we are sure you will soon be on your way to inventing your own signature craft beer, whether it’s an ale, weizen, IPA, lager, shandy or porter. You may even want to try your hand at hard cider! Why not make the most of your home bar and give it a go? Cheers!

Transforming A Finished Basement Into A Home Bar

Scarce on square footage? Multipurpose spaces allow you to prioritize everything you need and want no matter how big or small your home is. In this post, we’re going to focus on transforming a finished basement into a home bar in 2021 — just in time for our President’s Day Sale February 12th through February 22nd!

Now is a great time to save big on our all wood cabinetry and build the basement bar of your dreams while on a budget. Cheers to an even better at-home happy hour! Here are some things to keep in mind before starting your project.

Maintain your basement’s storage without sacrificing style.

You can still use your basement for storage purposes after transforming it into a home bar. After all, the whole point of having multipurpose spaces is that they serve more than one function. Start by optimizing any closet with an organization system that will help you to make the most of any existing storage space. Then, depending on your basement’s floor plan, install sleek all wood cabinetry along one wall or as an extension to your bar cabinets. These extra cabinets can accommodate any additional odds and ends you want to keep in the basement. With discreet, stylish storage solutions incorporated right into the room’s design, your holiday decorations and memorabilia will be out of sight while still safely tucked away.

Create a basement bar that has everything you need to enjoy a drink at home.

When designing a home bar, custom is your best bet, since every homeowner seeks different features. Whether it’s a wine storage cabinet to keep extra bottles of your favorite red, a refrigerator filled with champagne for big game celebrations, or glass door bar cabinets to showcase your collection of whiskey glasses. You want your home bar to have everything you need to enjoy a drink at home, as well as an entertainment center for your big screen TV and some comfortable seating. If you’re looking for assistance with your design, tap into our complimentary design services. We’d be happy to help you bring your dream bar to life!

Brighten up your basement to make it more inviting.

A common concern when turning a basement into a finished living space is the inherent darkness. Most basements lack natural light, so they tend to lean more toward the dark side. This is obviously not ideal, but not to worry! You can offset your basement’s naturally dreary ambiance by adding layers of artificial lighting. First focus on ambient lighting, which is best delivered through recessed or pot lighting. This type of overhead lighting is built into the ceiling, so it won’t make the (already low) ceiling appear any lower. If recessed lighting is not an option, short stemmed track lighting can work as well. From there, strategically place floor and table lamps, sconces, under cabinet lighting, and task lighting to add extra brightness where it’s needed most.

Think outside of the box when it comes to color scheme, theme, and decor.

From coastal themes to industrial chic designs, your home bar has no limits. Don’t feel boxed in by your basement. Forget what it used to be and allow yourself to fully imagine what it could be. Choose the colors and design that complement your home and style without worrying if it’s the right concept for a “basement” bar. With good lighting, comfortable furniture, and detailed decor, your basement bar will hardly feel like a basement at all. We can’t wait for you to open a bottle from your wine storage cabinet, and relax in your new finished space!

6 Wonderful Ways To House Your Wine Collection

Every wine lover should have a dedicated space to keep their favorite bottles of red and white safely stored. Doing so will showcase your collection while also adding some character and style to the home. There are many styling options that you can choose from based on your space and needs, so let’s explore some of the possibilities! From a wine cellar to a wine storage cabinet and everything in between, here are six wonderful ways to house your wine collection.

#1. Install a built in wine storage cabinet in your kitchen.

Custom cabinets are much more accessible these days, and it’s easy to add your own personal touches. Incorporating a built-in wine rack is a brilliant way to store a few of your go-to bottles right in the heart of the home. These cube style wall cabinets blend seamlessly into your kitchen cabinetry and add a bit of open shelving that doubles as decor. With Willow Lane Cabinetry’s New Year’s Sale running from December 24th to January 4th, now is an excellent time to make any cabinet upgrades or improvements to your kitchen.

#2. Add a wine rack to your home bar cabinets.

If you have a home bar, installing a wine storage cabinet there makes perfect sense as well. As we mentioned, these open racks offer easy storage and can also enhance the ambiance of the room. Alternatively, a cabinet-size wine cooler is another way to incorporate wine storage into your home’s cabinetry. These mini refrigerators keep your wine at the optimal drinking temperature for that perfect glass every time.

#3. Hang a wall mounted wine bottle rack if space is limited.

If your kitchen is small or you don’t have any designated bar cabinets, a wall mounted wine bottle rack is another possibility. This wall accessory keeps bottles stored horizontally and can be hung anywhere you have open space. However, since this storage solution offers little protection, opt for an area away from windows. Exposure to heat and direct sunlight can actually damage your wine collection fairly quickly.

#4. Build a wine wall in the dining room.

A wine wall is almost like a work of art and can be built in a common area like the dining room. Typically, a wine wall will consist of cubed shelving to both display and protect the bottles from traffic. But if bumping into the wall isn’t likely, you can go with a more open concept, such as metal racks, or one where the majority of the bottle is exposed.

#5. Create a wine pantry in a lonely corner or unused area.

If you have an oversized room with unused space, carving out an area to serve as a wine pantry could be an incredible addition to your home. This could be a walk-in style closet where the surrounding walls are used to store wine, or it could be something more contemporary, such as an all glass structure that you can see into from the outside. Let your imagination run wild and decide on a design that works with your home’s floor plan and aesthetic.

#6. Give your basement a makeover and transform it into a wine cellar.

Since dark, cool spaces are ideal for storing wine, building a wine cellar in your basement can help maintain your collection. Some things to keep in mind before moving forward with your project are the room’s temperature, humidity level, and exposure to UV light. Experts also recommend avoiding vibrations if possible, since over time this can actually disturb the wine’s maturation. In other words, you wouldn’t want to store your wine on a wall that is shared with your washer and dryer.

Designing A TV Room For The Ultimate Sports Fan

Fall is fairly synonymous with football, and for some families, summer is not complete without a trip to a baseball field. Sports have played a huge part in many of our lives, so it’s no surprise that designing a sports themed TV room is a popular request at Willow Lane Cabinetry. We’ve worked with ultimate sports fans to create their dream game day space, and we can’t wait to help bring your project to life. If designing a sports themed TV room is on your home renovation checklist, we’ve got you covered. Here are some of the key features you’ll want to include.

Expansive All Wood Cabinetry Entertainment Center

The TV room is obviously centered around the television, and we highly recommend going loud and proud with your entertainment center. A quality, all wood cabinetry set that expands from wall to wall is completely acceptable. In fact, it’s encouraged. Your entertainment center will not only serve as home to your big-screen TV, but it’s also the perfect place to display any sports memorabilia or fan gear.

Helmets, signed balls, or trophies from your glory days can all be showcased at the center of the room. Incorporate some strategic open shelving to create a balance of decor and technology. This approach allows you to easily set the tone for your sports themed TV room in an organized and authentic way.

Home Bar With Ample Space For Snacks And Drinks

The last thing you want to do on a commercial break is run to the kitchen to restock on snacks and make yourself a drink. Four minutes never flew by so fast. Save yourself the scrambled kitchen run and set up a functional home bar right in your TV room. With a fully stocked bar cabinet and plenty of extra storage for snacks, you’ll never have to make a mad dash again.

Depending on your game day needs, you can design a custom home bar that fulfills everything you and your fellow fans crave. From a built-in wine rack for the days you’re feeling classy to a glass front bar cabinet to display those whiskey glasses with your team’s logo, you can make your home bar uniquely yours. If space is an issue, go with a bar cart instead of a built-in bar. This portable piece of furniture is a great alternative for keeping all of your game day essentials close by.

Extra Comfortable Seating For Hours Of Lounging

When it’s game day, it’s game on in the TV room, and there’s a good chance you’ll be spending hours on end rooting for your team. Comfortable seating should not be overlooked when designing a TV room for the ultimate sports fan. Look for couches with deep seats, so you can really lean back and relax. Also, opt for cushions with higher densities. These are usually better quality and should maintain their shape and firmness longer than cheaper varieties.

The TV room is also the one spot in the home that has clearance for a recliner. Take this opportunity to go all out on the plush sectional with multiple reclining seats you’ve been eyeing. You could also mix up your furnishings to include an oversized bean bag chair or a fun reclining chaise. If you have kids, these types of seating options are great to incorporate into your TV room.

4 Sensational Cocktails For A Hot Summer Day

Beat the heat this summer with a refreshing drink made with ingredients right from your bar cabinet. These sensational cocktails use simple supplies that you likely have at home — and the best part? No bartender is needed! Whip up one of these ice cold adult beverages for your next at-home happy hour or weekend wind down.

1.Vodka Lemonade

Lemonade is a classic summertime treat, and it also makes a great base for a cocktail. You should already have vodka on hand, so head to your home bar and grab a bottle right from your bar cabinet, along with some freshly squeezed lemonade and a few extra lemons.

Mix two ounces of vodka with six ounces of lemonade and pour over ice. Thinly slice a lemon to use as a garnish and voila! You have yourself a delicious summer cocktail in seconds. If you don’t like your drinks super sweet, you can dilute the lemonade with a little club soda or lemon-flavored sparkling water.

2. Calimocho

Sangria is a go-to cocktail in the spring and summer months, because of its fresh, fruity flavors. But some recipes can get pretty elaborate with four kinds of fruit, cinnamon sticks, and brandy. If you want the sweet, slightly bubbly taste of Sangria without the prep, try the Calimocho.

Also known as the “Poor Man’s Sangria,” this Spanish cocktail originates from the Basque region of Spain and needs only two ingredients — soda and wine. If you have a bottle of wine in your wine storage cabinet, you’re halfway there! Traditionally this recipe calls for equal parts cola and red wine. You mix the two liquids together and serve over ice with a lime garnish. It’s unexpected, but don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.

3. Ranch Water

A summer staple in Texas, Ranch Water is simply tequila, lime, and sparkling water (preferably Topo Chico). How much you add of each ingredient is based on your own preferences. Since this recipe is up for interpretation, you can go heavy on the tequila or flood it with lime — it’s completely your call.

If you like your cocktails with a bit of a kick, run a lime around the rim of your glass and dip the glass into some spicy salt. You can make it easily at home by blending coarse salt with ground chili pepper from your bar cabinet spice rack.

4. Fresh Bellini

If you have a huge bowl of fresh fruit on top of your kitchen island, this recipe is a great way to make use of those ripe peaches. Although opting for fresh peaches in a Bellini is a little more leg work, it’s a thousand times more delicious than a pre-made mix. And this recipe is still only two ingredients!

To make fresh peach puree, all you need to do is peel and slice your peaches and then blend them up in a food processor or blender. Store your puree in the refrigerator, so that it’s nice and cool when you’re ready to serve your Bellinis. Grab a bottle of Prosecco from your wine storage cabinet and you’re ready to go! Each flute should have about two ounces of puree in it before topping with Prosecco for the perfect peachy delight.

6 Fruity Boozy Popsicles To Enjoy At Home

With the weather warming up, we’re already thinking of ways to keep cool this summer. And since many of us are spending more hours at home, it’s the perfect time to peruse the bar cabinet, dust off what’s in your wine storage cabinet, and get creative in your home bar by making some boozy popsicles.

Many of your favorite summer cocktails can be transformed into fruity, boozy popsicles with just a few tweaks. Cool and refreshing, these sweet treats are a delicious way to beat the heat and unwind in your backyard or on the patio. Here are a few fabulous ideas.

1.Prosecco Pops

Pop a bottle of Prosecco, and celebrate the first day of summer by whipping up some fizzy popsicles. Sweet and sparkly, this easy recipe from Delish combines Prosecco, freshly squeezed lemonade, and your favorite summer berries. Place strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries in a popsicle mold, and then fill three quarters of the way with prosecco. Top it off with lemonade and freeze for at least six hours before serving.

2. Tinto de Verano Popsicles

Grab your favorite Spanish red from the wine storage cabinet, and make a batch of Tinto de Verano to freeze. Enjoyed during the summer in Spain, Tinto de Verano is a simple mix of red wine and lemon-lime soda. To make this quick cocktail into a palpable popsicle, Tracy of Baking Mischief recommends adding lime simple syrup. You may already keep this flavored syrup in your bar cabinet, but if not, you can make your own by combining sugar, water, and lime juice.

3. Boozy Rocket Pops

The red, white and blue rocket pop was probably a summer staple during your childhood years. Now you can recreate this classic popsicle with a boozy twist. This Boozy Rocket Pop recipe from Delish calls for raspberry sorbet, vanilla ice cream, blue curacao, and white rum. With three delicious layers, it’s a festive and flavorful pop that should definitely be served as part of your 4th of July menu.

Homemade popsicles with watermelon and lime

4. Tequila + Watermelon Popsicles

No summer is complete without taking a bite into a juicy slice of watermelon. This mouth watering recipe from Love and Olive Oil combines fresh watermelon with tequila for a margarita-like dessert — hold the salt. A little sugar and splash of lime really enhance the flavors, giving this pop a sweet kick and making it the obvious choice for your next pool day.

5. Miami Vice Boozy Popsicles

You’ll imagine yourself serenely sailing along the ocean the second you taste these Miami Vice popsicles. By combining two of the most popular frozen cocktails, piña colada and strawberry daiquiri, the Miami Vice has become synonymous with cruise life. The popsicle version crafted by The Beach House Kitchen is close competition and makes it easy to recreate a relaxing vacation at home. With sweet strawberries, creamy coconut and tangy pineapple, this two layer popsicle is the ultimate fruity and boozy combo.

6. Vodka Gummy Bear Pops

Have you ever tried vodka gummy bears? What about vodka gummy bear pops? This idea from A Spicy Perspective may sound slightly reminiscent of your college days, but who doesn’t love a good throwback? Pour the vodka into a bowl, and then add in the gummy bears. Leave them in the refrigerator overnight, or for a couple of days, so that the vodka is almost entirely absorbed. In popsicle molds, freeze the vodka gummy bears and lemon-lime soda in layers, so that the gummy bears are equally distributed. The finished product is a colorful creation that is the perfect way to kick off the weekend.

How To Be A Coffee Barista In Your Own Kitchen

Do you love waking up to the sweet aroma of freshly brewed coffee in the kitchen? For some, there is no better way to start the morning. Coffee has long been one of America’s favorite beverages, but it’s not just for breakfast anymore. From creamy lattes and cappuccinos, to frozen blended treats, coffee can be enjoyed at any time of the day (although it’s smart to switch to decaf the closer you get to bedtime)! Best of all, you don’t need to spend a fortune at your local coffee house to sip a specialty drink. If you want to learn how to be a barista in your own kitchen, read on.

Creating A Coffee Station

Start by designating an area in your kitchen as a coffee station. Whether it’s a corner of your kitchen island countertop, a portable cart, or as part of your home bar cabinet, having a space reserved for brewing is essential. This is where you will keep your drip coffee maker, single-serve pod maker, and/or espresso machine. Install a utility tray in a nearby drawer for holding spoons or stirrers, beverage napkins, filters, reusable straws, and a coffee scoop. A pull out trash can is also a nice addition below a kitchen island. Keep a grinder for whole beans in your kitchen or bar cabinet, as well as mugs, tall glasses, a cream pitcher and a thermal carafe. Then, designate a portion of your kitchen pantry cabinet for storing non-dairy or shelf-stable creamer, canisters of white and raw sugar, honey, stevia packets, and simple syrup or agave nectar for iced coffee. If you love specialty drinks, you’ll also need flavored syrups, a blender, and spices like cinnamon, cocoa powder, and nutmeg. Last but definitely not least, you’ll need a variety of coffee beans or bags of ground coffee, and a basket or carousel for holding pods.

9 Interior Home Improvement Projects To Complete This Summer

Most of us will be spending more time at home this summer — making it the perfect time for some DIY home improvements. From finally carving out that private home office where you can peacefully work from home, to color coordinating the custom cabinets in your kitchen in true celebrity style, there are plenty of easy and affordable ways to make your home the best place to be.

Create a dedicated home office.

With many jobs going remote, more of us are working from home than ever before. And while not every home can dedicate a full room to a home office, most of us have some space we can spare. Whether it’s a corner in the living room or a nook in the kitchen, carve out somewhere that you can designate as solely a workstation.

Add built-in storage.

It’s amazing what a few custom cabinets in the laundry room, bathroom, or TV room can do. Notoriously messy spaces are suddenly spic and span with the simple addition of built-in storage. Choose from a broad selection of traditional, transitional and contemporary cabinets. We have the perfect style and finish to create storage solutions in every room of your home.

Replace carpet with tile or laminate flooring.

Between foot traffic, food stains and beverage spills, keeping wall-to-wall carpeting clean can seem like an impossible task — especially when kids or pets come into the picture. Tile or laminate flooring is an affordable, durable replacement for carpet and comes in a wide variety of gorgeous styles. This simple swap will make maintaining your floors hassle-free for years to come.

Enjoy a pop of bright color or a clean, modern look by installing a backsplash in the kitchen or bath. This tiny tweak in your existing design can have a huge impact on the room’s overall aesthetic. It is also functional, keeping walls safe from common splash areas like the sink or stove. Impervious to water damage, tile can also be used for other wet areas, such as a bathroom accent wall or shower surround.

Upgrade your closet.

A closet system can help you transform your current closet into an organized dream. From a built in hamper to custom shoe shelves, ready to assemble closet designs from Willow Lane Cabinetry are a foolproof way to upgrade your closet and give every item in your wardrobe a place to call home.

Paint your interior walls.

A fresh coat of paint on the walls can instantly make any room in your home feel brand new. Rather than go with a classic neutral, explore some more vibrant shades. The weather is warmer and nature is in full bloom. Grab some inspiration from the great outdoors and bring a splash of bright color indoors.

Organize your kitchen with inside cabinet accessories.

Take control of your custom cabinets by adding a few inside cabinet accessories. These simple additions make organization much easier and allow you to find your favorite kitchen essentials in seconds. From tray dividers to base filler spice racks, we have everything you need to start designing your own celebrity-style kitchen right at home.

Add a home bar.

Elevate your at-home happy hour with a home bar for mixing summer cocktails. Bar cabinets can be incorporated into your kitchen, dining room, living room or outdoor living space. Once you pick the perfect place to add your bar cabinets, contact our design team to help you get started with your custom home bar design.

Tile your back patio.

Summertime means more time outdoors, so why not spruce up your back patio with some beautiful tile? It’s likely going to be the spot for sun bathing, reading, or watching your kids immerse themselves with their favorite water toys. Let’s make your outdoor space a little more aesthetically pleasing. Browse Willow Lane Cabinetry’s diverse selection of outdoor-suitable flooring, and give your patio a much needed facelift this summer.

3 Seasonal Cocktails For Wine Lovers

You don’t need to go out to enjoy a delicious wine cocktail. Head right over to your home bar and whip up one of these enticing spring recipes. By combining your favorite wine with some of the season’s most scrumptious flavors, you can indulge in a tasty cocktail in the privacy and comfort of your home.

  1. French 75

You should have at least one bottle of bubbly in your wine storage cabinet, so pop some champagne and put together this classic cocktail. The French 75 (or Soixante Quinze) has been around for over 100 years and should be served in a champagne flute with a lemon twist. But don’t let the fruit fool you. This champagne cocktail may be slightly sweet and citrusy but it packs a serious kick.

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz. gin
  • 2 oz. champagne
  • ¾ oz. freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • ¾ oz. simple syrup

Directions:

Grab a cocktail shaker from your bar cabinet and pour in your gin, lemon juice, and simple syrup. Fill with ice and shake vigorously for about 20 seconds. Strain your mixture into a flute, top with champagne, and serve with a lemon twist.

Sangria

  1. Springtime Sangria

Make the most of the season’s fresh fruit with a juicy spring Sangria. This wine cocktail is a favorite year long — but it’s especially delicious when you combine white wine with ripe strawberries or oranges. Pick your favorite bottle of dry white wine from your wine storage cabinet to use as the base for your spring Sangria. The optional addition of brandy adds bold flavor, and you can control the sweetness by using either club soda or a lemon-lime soda. Serve in a large pitcher and enjoy on your backyard patio.

Ingredients:

  • 750 ml. bottle of chilled dry white wine
  • ¼ cup brandy
  • ¼ cup to ⅔ cup of white sugar
  • 1 to 2 cups of club soda or lemon-lime soda
  • Fresh seasonal fruit (such as strawberries, oranges, pineapple or cherries)

Directions:

Sangria can be made a few hours before, or left over night, so that the flavors really marinate. Combine all of your ingredients (except your soda) into a large pitcher, and stir until the sugar is dissolved. Before serving, add one to two cups of either club soda or lemon-lime soda (depending on how sweet you like your Sangria). Serve in white wine glasses.

  1. Rosé-Aperol Spritz

This springtime version of an Aperol Spritz from Bon Appetit is as pleasant as it is pink, so you’ll want to stock your bar cabinet with Aperol a little earlier this year. By swapping Prosecco with a bottle of sparkling rosé and adding passion fruit juice, this Italian, wine-based cocktail turns a blushing shade of soft pink. If you love an Aperol Spritz in summer, fall in love with a Rosé-Aperol Spritz this spring.

Ingredients:

  • 750 ml. bottle of sparkling rosé
  • ¾ cup passion fruit juice
  • ¼ cup Aperol
  • ¼ cup freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 4 tsp. sugar
  • Grapefruit (optional garnish)

Directions:

In a large pitcher, mix the Aperol, passion fruit juice, lime juice, and sugar. Once the sugar is completely dissolved, stir in the sparkling rosé. Serve your Rosé-Aperol Spritz over ice in a large wine glass and garnish with a grapefruit wedge.
