How To Choose The Right Bathroom Vanity For Your Unique Space

Every bathroom is unique, which makes finding the right bathroom vanity for your individual space a bit of a challenge. Here are some guidelines to follow to help you choose the right bathroom vanity for each bathroom in your home.

Powder Room

Powder rooms tend to be on the small side so the goal is to make the room feel less cramped. Storage is usually not a priority, as you won’t need any toiletries or linens in a powder room. With that said, you will need to house cleaning supplies and extra rolls of paper, so look at single sink bathroom vanities in sleek styles to make the room feel more open. Shaker vanities are a good choice in small bathrooms because of their clean lines and simple look – but you also shouldn’t be afraid to make a statement with your powder room bathroom vanity either. This is the one bathroom in the house you can guarantee guests will see, so go for glam if that’s what you want!

Guest Bath

A guest bath can vary greatly in size and function. Be considerate of the square footage of the bathroom and who will be using it. For example:

  • If your hall bathroom is used by a member of your family, the bathroom will require more storage than if it were solely for visitors.
  • If the bathroom is typically only used by one individual, it might make more sense to choose a single sink bathroom vanity and free up the room for a larger shower or a linen closet.

Another factor that could impact your decision is whether or not your home has hallway linen closets. If there is adequate storage outside of the bathroom that you can store extra towels or cleaning supplies, you may not require a vanity with as many bathroom cabinets or storage capabilities. On the other hand, if your home lacks linen closet space, you should opt for a vanity with spacious linen cabinets above.

Master Bath

The master bath is typically the largest bathroom in the home and traditionally will feature a double sink bathroom vanity. However, do not take tradition as law.

In today’s modern homes, it is not uncommon to find a single sink vanity in a master bath. Aside from the fact that your master bath may only be used by you, you also might not see a large double sink vanity as a priority. Having a bathroom with a shower and a tub may rate higher on your list of priorities.

Master SuiteWhen it comes to the design of the vanity, that will depend on whether your bathroom is part of your bedroom or not. If it’s not, then go with what you like! There’s no reason for the theme of your master bathroom to reflect the master bedroom if they’re not attached.

However, if your bathroom does open up to the master bedroom, you will also want to factor in the style elements of your bedroom when choosing a vanity. You don’t want your bedroom design to clash or conflict with the style of your bathroom furniture. When choosing the layout and bathroom vanity for your master bath, take into consideration the areas of the bathroom that will be seen from the bedroom as well.

These types of bathroom suites may also require larger bathroom cabinetry to make the room feel complete. Depending on the floor plan, you could install a large double sink vanity; two single sink vanities with a prominent divide of shelving, or have two separate bathroom vanities on opposing walls.

3 Tips For A Clean And Sparkling Shower Door

Spring cleaning is still lingering in the air, and it’s time to give your bathroom some extra TLC before your busy summer begins. Hard water stains and soap scum are common concerns — there is a good chance they are on your shower doors and walls, and perhaps on your bathroom cabinets as well. Thankfully, removing gunk and hard water stains is easier than you may think. Here are three thoughtful tips to get your shower doors clean and sparkling, and to keep them that way!

Spray Cleaner on Glass Shower DoorDaily Maintenance

Keep your shower looking brand new by using a squeegee after each use. With the proper preventative maintenance, it will be easier to stop water deposits from building up, which will save you scrubbing time and effort later on. Keep a squeegee hanging in your shower as a daily reminder to wipe it down after you are finished bathing. You can also use a daily shower spray as a handy, quick and inexpensive fix.

Creative Chemical-Free Cleaners

If you wish to avoid chemicals in your bathroom, consider making your own shower cleaner using natural ingredients. Experiment to see what works best. These mixtures can be used on more than just your shower doors. Try them on your mirrors, bathroom cabinets, countertops, knobs and pulls, and sinks.

  1. Water and Vinegar: Mix equal parts water and white vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray the mixture onto your shower door, and wipe it with a sponge. Let it sit for a few minutes on the glass. Keep applying the mixture as it dries, while keeping the door wet for a minimum of five minutes. Rinse the solution off the door with warm water. If the results are not to your liking, add more vinegar to the solution and start from the beginning. You can also add some dish soap for added cleaning power, and 10 to 20 drops of your favorite essential oil to give your cleaner a pleasant scent. Take note that vinegar can damage stone materials.

  1. Water, Baking Soda, and Vinegar: Pour ½ cup of baking soda in a container and add white vinegar to form a frosting-like paste, using a spoon to mix. Wipe the paste on your shower door and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Scrub well, and then rinse thoroughly.

  1. Vinegar, Baking Soda and LemonSparkling Citrus: Cut a lemon in half. Dip one half in baking soda and rub it gently on the glass door. Use the other half to give it second coating of citrus, then rinse and dry. This trick should leave your bathroom looking clean and smelling lemony-fresh the natural way!

Useful Tools

Take advantage of everyday household items to make you cleaning efforts easier, efficient, and cost effective! An old toothbrush is excellent for scrubbing the metal frame, and inside small nooks and crannies between the glass doors. A paint scraper can remove the buildup where the metal meets the shower or door. A flat razor can carefully scrape stubborn mineral spots off of flat glass.

Stop soap scum and stubborn hard water stains in their tracks with these manageable tips and tricks, and enjoy a refreshingly clean and sparkling bathroom.

Curb Appeal: 10 Landscape Mistakes To Avoid This Spring

While winter was all about keeping cozy inside, spring is all about spending time outdoors. If you’re a do it yourself kitchen remodel type, you’re probably a DIY lawn guru as well. That’s great! Just make sure your landscaping is up to par by avoiding these 10 common mistakes that homeowners make.

1. Fertilizing Fails

Fertilizer is great, so if you’re skipping it, you’re doing your lawn a disservice. That being said, too much fertilizer is not great. When purchasing plants or grass, ask which fertilizer is best and how often it should be used.

Gardening Tools2. Keeping Your Gardening Tools Indoors

Out of sight, out of mind. When your gardening tools are buried somewhere in the house, it is less likely that you’ll grab them to do some maintenance here and there. Install some specialty cabinets in your garage for easy access.

3. Putting Your Plants In Areas With Bad Lighting

You take so much time and patience to put your plants into the ground, so make sure you do it right. Take into account the shadows your house produces and any shade created by trees before planting. Some plants require more sunlight than others and you want to make sure they get the right exposure.

4. Over Decorating

Got garden gnomes? It’s easy to get excited about the nice weather and cover your entire yard with decorations and figurines. The problem is that this kind of disorganized decorating usually ends in disaster. It’s important to have a common theme, and a limit to your outdoor décor. In other words, it might be time for a garage sale.

5. Forgetting That Plants Grow

Like babies and puppies, plants won’t stay the same size forever. Make sure you are taking into account their growing potential and how that will effect the other elements of your yard before you plant anything.

Lawn Mower6. Cutting Your Grass Shorter Than You Should

If you cut your grass shorter, you won’t have to mow it as often, right? Wrong. It’s actually better to leave grass a little longer during warmer months to provide the soil extra shade from the sun. Trying to cut your grass too short could also lead to bare patches in your lawn, which are much more annoying to fix than mowing your lawn regularly.

7. Don’t Just Look At Your Yard From The Street View

When we’re landscaping, some of us only think about what the neighbors will see. What about you? When designing your lawn, also take a look at it from the inside. When you’re sitting on the couch, cooking in the kitchen, or working at your desk, won’t you be looking out the windows? Make sure your view is just as pleasing as your neighbors.

8. Pruning Plants In Spring

Don’t start pruning before doing a little research. Different plants have different processes when it comes to pruning, and usually spring is not the best time of year to prune. When in doubt, don’t prune at all. Not pruning your plants is less harmful than doing it wrong.

Pruning a Tree9. Not All Tools Work When It Comes To Landscaping

Are you the kind of person that keeps a hammer in your kitchen drawer? Are you also the kind of person that uses a hammer for everything? Earlier we cautioned about not having specialty cabinets for your gardening tools, and now we’re going to warn you about having the wrong tools in those cabinets. Some jobs require tools that you may not have. Don’t just grab any tool you have lying around. You could damage your lawn, and the cost of fixing that mistake could greatly exceed the cost of renting or buying the right tool.

10. Designing A Pretty Yard That’s Not Comfortable

While the look of your lawn is undeniably important, so is its functionality. When designing your lawn, be sure to think of how you and your family will use it. Create a space that is as welcoming as it is beautiful.

7 Keys To Creating The Ultimate Outdoor Kitchen For Entertaining

With summer around the corner, there’s no better time to create or upgrade an outdoor kitchen area. Outdoor living is just as important as indoor living; it’s a place to relax, entertain, and enjoy! Important elements of every outdoor kitchen include a grill, outdoor bar cabinets and kitchen islands. Bring the inside out with these luxurious ideas to transform your backyard into the ultimate outdoor kitchen and entertainment space.

Dining Al Fresco: Eating outdoors has lots of benefits — think fresh air, sunshine, scenery, and plentiful seating. You can sit in chairs at a table, on bar stools at a kitchen island, or lounge on all-weather patio sofas. Stay prepared for Mother Nature by customizing a pergola or covered porch in your space so that you can dine outside in the rain or shine! If it’s too hot or cold, you can compensate with ceiling fans or heating lamps.

Open-Air Kitchen: Open-air kitchens are a must for outdoor entertaining. If you have a covered porch, why not incorporate outdoor kitchen cabinets? They are a great way to stay organized and ready for meal prep, and can be used as hidden storage areas for extra plates, cups and napkins. Cabinets can be arranged in a variety of ways and styles that portray an open layout. Willow Lane Cabinetry offers many different cabinet styles, including shaker, raised panel, and recessed panel.

Warm Weather Entertaining: When the sun is shining, it’s time to go all out with your customized appliances and accessories. Kitchen islands and carts can be extremely useful when entertaining in your backyard. Choose from portable styles that can move about, and enhance the outdoor party experience. These cabinets-to-go can serve as a beverage station, condiment cart, or dessert bar. Top everything off with a large built-in grilling area (or grade-A portable grill) that’s big enough to cook for a crowd. A built-in outdoor kitchen can include refrigerated drawers, a beverage center and cooler.

Strategic Layout: It’s crucial to make the most of your space for successful outdoor entertaining. A major element is to create the right indoor to outdoor flow. This means having wide and direct access from outside to a powder room for guests. It also means having easy access to the indoor kitchen for the party host.

Comforts Of Home: Be sure to make the outside just as charming as the inside of your home. Have plenty of comfortable seating, with outdoor cushions and throw pillows. Create a family-friendly, picnic atmosphere with unbreakable dinnerware and cups. Serving trays are both decorative and functional when hosting a cookout. Food umbrellas will protect edibles from insects. It’s that special attention to detail that will make you the host with the most.

Backyard Tiki TorchesDay To Night: Enjoy your yard no matter what time of day. Adding an outdoor fire pit creates a cozy atmosphere and lavish aesthetic, and can assist in heating up your favorite savory and sweet snacks like shish kabobs or s’mores. Keep the party going by lighting up your area with tiki torches, patio lights, or string lights.

Outdoor Ambiance: All entertainment areas should be equipped with accommodating accessories, and precautions to keep things running smoothly. Choose simple landscaping that’s not too close to your sitting and dining areas. Select potted plants that don’t attract insects while still contributing to the overall appearance of your outdoor entertainment area. Or go a step beyond and choose plants that repel mosquitos and other biting insects naturally. You and your guests will enjoy the wide-open space, and relaxing, bug-free atmosphere.

Want to go out without leaving your home? Spice up your summer by creating the ultimate outdoor kitchen for entertaining, and relaxing with family and friends. An outdoor kitchen lets you easily bring the party outside, and when you customize your space, your backyard will be just as beautiful as the inside of your home.

5 Spring Cleaning Tips For Your New Kitchen

Custom kitchens have everything you could possibly wish for — except that self-cleaning feature! But once you get a new kitchen, you’ll want to keep it looking brand new for as long as possible.

Routine cleaning and care is key to maintaining the luster and shine of your all wood cabinetry, stainless steel appliances, and ceramic or hardwood floors. And since it’s officially springtime, you know what that means — Spring Cleaning starts now. Don’t stress, though! We’re sharing our favorite Spring Cleaning tips to keep your new kitchen sparkling all season long.

Vision Almond - Willow Lane Cabinetry1. Don’t just spot clean cabinets — let them shine!

If you’re like most homeowners, you may have a tendency to spot clean your kitchen cupboards. Drip there? Drop there? Wipe it up. Less often do we wipe them down from top to bottom like they deserve. It’s good to get in the habit of really cleaning your cabinets every once in awhile, so that you can remove any buildup and preserve the finish.

Cleaning your cabinets is actually a fairly easy process with the right product. Murphy’s Oil Soap is a safe, effective cleaner for all wood cabinetry. This classic cleaner not only rids your kitchen cupboards of food residue, but also leaves a really pretty shine that keeps them looking brand new.

2. Disinfect knobs and pulls.

It’s important to wipe down the knobs and pulls on your kitchen cabinets, as they can be a top spot for germs and bacteria. You will find a few great products on the shelves that can help you deep clean your hardware without scratching the surface. Bon Ami Powder Cleanser and Bar Keepers Friend Cleanser and Polish are both popular and easy to use options. If you want a quick DIY solution, you can whip up your own cleanser using dish soap or even vinegar.

Using soap, you just need a drop in a bowl of warm water. Use your hand to mix the soap and water. Then dip your cloth into the soapy water, wring out any excess, and use your cloth to wipe down knobs and pulls. Alternatively, you can mix one-part vinegar with one-part water. If you are having difficulty using a cloth, a toothbrush works great, and is easier to maneuver around nooks and crannies. Once you’re finished, dry your hardware thoroughly with a clean cloth.

3. Use lemons to freshen up and clean.

Lemons are a natural, fragrant way to clean up the kitchen. Two of our favorite uses are in the microwave and the food disposal.

To clean your microwave, you may already be familiar with the steam trick. This just means heating up a cup of water for a few minutes, and letting the steam help loosen any grime off the inside of your microwave. This works even better by squeezing a lemon into the water first, and then dropping it in your microwave-safe cup or container. Put the lemon water into the microwave, heat for three minutes, let sit an additional three minutes, then remove the cup and use a cloth to wipe down the interior of your microwave. Your microwave will be looking good and smelling fresh!

Another way lemons do wonders is by slicing up a few and putting them down your disposal. You can also pour some vinegar down there, which will help clean out your pipes while also ridding the drain of odors.

Vinegar, Baking Soda, and Lemon4. Speaking of vinegar, it’s also great for cleaning out your coffee maker.

Running your coffee maker with vinegar and water is a great way to keep it clean. There are only so many pieces you can clean by hand or run through the dishwasher. Making a “pot of vinegar” will clean the rest.

5. Use baking soda as a natural cleaner for appliances and sinks.

To keep your large appliances looking good, use baking soda to shine them up. Whether it’s a dull or dirty looking sink or an oven with burnt-on food, a paste of baking soda and water can do wonders.

Baking soda is also a brilliant odor neutralizer. Keep some in your refrigerator, on the bottom of your trashcan, or anywhere else it tends to smell less than pleasant.

How To Design A Modern Bathroom With Vintage Charm

When modern meets vintage, the themes combine to create a sophisticated space filled with comfort and charm. To design your own hybrid bathroom, balance elements so that they complement one another rather than compete. Here are a few of our favorite ways to give a modern bathroom some vintage flair.

Lexington Oatmeal Glaze - Willow Lane CabinetryFind furniture that feels new but looks antique.

From bathroom cabinetry with distressed finishes to clawfoot tubs, there are many ways to incorporate antique furniture without losing quality or durability. You don’t need to actually have old furniture to achieve that vintage look. Simply choose furniture that was inspired by older designs or were specifically created to look aged.

If you need ideas for your bathroom cabinetry, take a look at our antique white cabinets like Lexington Oatmeal Glaze or Roosevelt White with Chocolate Accent. Both of these options give you that chic antiqued appearance without compromising craftsmanship or construction.

Soften a modern bathroom with contrast, color and unexpected décor.

If you prefer a modern looking bathroom vanity and bathroom cabinetry, there are still other ways to soften the room and incorporate some vintage charm.

Décor is by far the easiest avenue for achieving this. Consider hanging a chandelier or worn wooden wall mirror. Rust or copper accents also convey a cozy, vintage feel. Add a wire trash basket, or swap out your cabinet hardware. A corner chair with a colorful pattern or an upholstered bench can also bring some color and character to the room.

You could also add some color to the walls, which modern rooms tend to lack. Rather than white or grey for your bathroom walls, try a paint color that pops, like a pretty pastel.

Other than décor and paint, you can opt for more permanent additions like beaded board walls or penny tiles that make the room feel a little retro. The new elements will heighten the old, while the old elements ground the new.

Bring a bit of the outdoors inside.

Orchid in Bathroom WindowModern bathrooms can tend to feel a little cold and unwelcoming. You can reverse this, or at least lessen it, by bringing a bit of the outdoors inside. A few examples include living plants placed in ceramic pots and arranged on the windowsill, a wooden ladder used to hang towels, or colorful paintings of nature hung on the walls.

By incorporating natural elements, you are able to create a sensation of life and make the space more inviting. While this is not typical of a modern bathroom, it works wonders when trying to add some charm to your hybrid design.

The best of both modern and vintage is an enchanting collaboration.

Modern bathrooms are designed to be new, sleek, minimalist, and lack a lot of color, texture, and contrast. On the other hand, vintage bathrooms are full of character and color, endearing oddities, and aren’t afraid to show their age. By combining the two, you might think chaos would ensue, but the result is actually extraordinary. Hopefully these tips have helped you design your very own modern bathroom with vintage charm.
