I’m Dreaming Of A White Kitchen

You know those holiday commercials where the person walks out their front door to discover a brand new car, topped with a bright red bow, sitting right in their driveway?

Who else is waiting for that to happen in their kitchen? Imagine beautiful new kitchen cabinets, a large kitchen island, shiny floors, and a complete remodel done while you were sleeping. It may be a lofty dream but hey, dreams do come true.

While we can’t help you with the team of magicians to transform your kitchen while you sleep, we can help with the planning. In celebration of the snowy season, take inspiration from these kitchen design ideas that feature a blanket of white.

Society Shaker White - Willow Lane CabinetryHere is what you’ll need to create a Winter Wonderland in your home with a beautiful white kitchen, and make your dreams come true this holiday season.

White Kitchen Cabinets

Crisp white kitchen cabinets are gorgeous, and they have this incredible ability to liven up the room. Swapping dark finishes for white cabinets is like opening up the curtains and letting the light in. The room will instantly feel brighter and more energized.

Willow Lane Cabinetry offers a wide selection of cabinets with white finishes. If your kitchen design ideas lean more toward the classic or traditional style, you will fall for Roosevelt White from The Roosevelt Series. These kitchen cabinets have a raised panel style, meaning the doors have beautiful dimension and detailing. If you prefer a bit more modern look, you’ll appreciate the clean, contemporary feel of The Society Collection. Take a look at the Society Shaker White for an attractive all white finish.

Water Jet Glass Tile in Ornamental Bright White - Willow Lane CabinetryWhite Backsplash

Adding white backsplash tiles to an all white kitchen is subtly dynamic, as you get the different textures and dimension without a contrast of color.

If you’re looking for an interesting pattern, consider the Water Jet Glass Tile in Ornamental Bright White. This arabesque tile, also known as lantern tile, is a gorgeous Mediterranean style that will create a distinct pattern for your kitchen backsplash.

For a sleek, modern look, we recommend the Cristezza Club Glass Tile in Bright White. This handmade glass mosaic tile combines a variety of rectangular shapes to form a mesmerizing horizontal backsplash. This selection is a great choice in a contemporary or transitional kitchen.

White Sink

Your Winter Wonderland would not be complete without a white sink. Luckily our AstraGranite sinks come in four beautiful colors to match any countertop, including white.

Large Single Bowl White AstraGranite Sink - Willow Lane CabinetryWhen choosing a kitchen sink, keep in mind that granite sinks are the most durable option. They are scratch resistant, stain resistant, and can withstand heat up to 550 degrees. Willow Lane Cabinetry’s AstraGranite sinks are made with 80% Quartzite and 20% Acrylic, and have silver ions that kills 99% of bacteria on contact. They are very quiet as the acrylic dulls sound.

When choosing a kitchen sink, it’s important to keep warranty in mind. All of the Willow Lane Cabinetry’s granite sinks are covered by a limited lifetime warranty.

With granite not only do you get the perfect white sink to match your Winter Wonderland theme, but also a quality addition to your home.

3 Natural DIY Ways To Freshen Up Your Home This Winter

There’s nothing like freshly baked cookies or pie to make your house smell all warm and inviting. But when you are pressed for time and holiday guests are dropping by at a moment’s notice, how do you make sure your home has a pleasant aroma? Modern kitchen hoods can help whisk away any stinky smells as you cook, but go that extra step and infuse the rest of your home with the scent of spiced apple cider, pine trees, and refreshing citrus. Here are some DIY (do-it-yourself) ways to freshen up your home naturally and in no time at all!

Cinnamon Sticks, Star Anise and Dried Orange SlicesSimmering Spiced Cider

It’s easy to fill your kitchen with the fragrant scent of apples, cinnamon, citrus, and cloves when you have spiced cider simmering in your kitchen. This DIY freshener can be made on the stovetop or in a small slow cooker. Pour in one quart of apple juice or cider and toss in two sliced apples or a cup of dried apple peels. Add four cinnamon sticks to the pot, a few pieces of star anise, and a tablespoon of whole cloves (for a spicier scent, feel free to add more). Top it off with slices of fresh orange. Simmer on low when company comes to call, and add more liquid as needed.

Homemade Orange Spice Potpourri

This potpourri takes a little advanced prep work to dry out the oranges, but once it’s done, the scent will last for weeks. Preheat your oven to 225 degrees. Slice fresh oranges a quarter-inch thick and place them in a single layer on a rack within a rimmed pan. Place the pan in the oven and bake for three hours or until your oranges are dry, turning occasionally. Cool your oranges and place them in a bowl with star anise, whole cloves, and cinnamon sticks, and sprinkle with nutmeg, ginger, and allspice.

Pine branches

Fresh-cut pine branches just smell like the holidays. Bring the outdoors inside by placing pine branches in a galvanized jug, or a vase filled with pinecones for a decorative touch.

Galvanized Jug with Pine BranchesEveryone knows how to clean a kitchen sink, but while the surface may look sparkly, down the drain is a whole different story. Sometimes food debris and bacteria can linger in your drain or garbage disposal, and this can leave your kitchen smelling less than fresh. If your sink is the source of the stink, pour equal parts white vinegar and baking soda down the drain — a cup of each should do the trick. Let that sit and bubble for about ten minutes and then flush the drain with hot water. If you have a garbage disposal, toss in two cups of ice, a cup of course salt, and one or two bits of citrus rind, and fully run it through to deodorize and clean the blades.

3 Easy Game Day Snack Ideas

Most folks will tell you game day is about football and beer, but we’re going to put our money on the food and the kitchen island. Now before you get all defensive, hear us out. Snacks are a quintessential part of game day, and without the kitchen island, your coffee table can get real cluttered, real fast.

No longer just a prep space, kitchen island trends dictate how you entertain and what’s on the menu. From a buffet style spread to portable kitchen island ideas that let you take the food front row, your guests will be able to graze in game day fashion. Pair these easy snack ideas with your favorite piece of furniture for a fan-approved Sunday Fun-day.

Spinach Artichoke Dip

Sure you can buy spinach dip in the freezer section, but the homemade stuff is so much better! This easy recipe takes less than 30 minutes, so there goes your excuse.

Spinach Artichoke DipIngredients:

Cream Cheese (8 ounces)

Sour Cream (1/2 cup)

Shredded Parmesan Cheese (1 cup)

Shredded Mozzarella Cheese (1 cup)

Fresh Baby Spinach (1 bag)

Artichokes (14 ounces)

4 Garlic Cloves (minced)

Cayenne Pepper and Salt

Your only prep will be to chop up your artichokes into smaller pieces and steam your spinach. In a medium-sized pot, combine all of your cheese ingredients and stir over medium heat until the cream cheese is melted. Add in the artichokes, spinach, and garlic and stir for about two minutes on low-medium heat until everything is combined and creamy. Remove your dip from the heat, and top with cayenne pepper and salt to taste. Serve your game day dip with tortilla chips or crackers.

Baked Buffalo Chicken Roll-Ups

Chicken wings are delicious — but messy!  An easier alternative that is just as yummy, and less likely to ruin your sofa, is these buffalo chicken rollups from Pillsbury. Serve them up on a platter with celery sticks and ranch dressing.

Ingredients:

Pillsbury Crescent Rolls (8 ounces)

Shredded Rotisserie Chicken (2 cups)

Hot Sauce (2 tablespoons)

Cream Cheese (2 ounces)

Shredded Cheddar Cheese (3 ounces)

Chopped Celery (1/4 cup)

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees and grease a round 9-inch pan. In a bowl, mixed shredded chicken, cream cheese, hot sauce, cheddar cheese and celery. On a cutting board, unroll your sheet of dough and spread out your mixture leaving about a ½ inch around the edges. From one long side, roll over until you reach the end and seal it by pinching the seams together. Cut the roll into eight pieces and place cut side down in your pan. Bake your roll ups for 18-22 minutes or until the dough is deep golden brown. Cool for 5 minutes and serve with a side of celery and ranch sauce for dipping.

Sandwich On A Stick

Setting up a sandwich station can kill the flow of your party and bring out people’s picky side.

“Is this Munster? Do you have Cheddar?”

But football lovers do love sandwiches! These unconventional sandwich skewers are an easy way to get people what they want, no assembly required.

Sandwiches on a StickIngredients:

Deli Sliced Ham

Provolone Cheese Slices

Sharp American Cheese Slices

Lettuce Leaves

Cherry Tomatoes

Sliced French Bread

Skewers

Each skewer will require approximately 2 slices of meat, 2 slices of cheese, 1 slice of bread, 2 tomatoes, and 1 leaf of lettuce, so plan according to your party size. To prep, cut your ham and cheeses into quarters, and grape tomatoes in half, for easy assembly. Thread all of your ingredients onto the skewers in an alternating fashion. Serve with spicy brown or honey mustard for dipping.

5 Creative Home Uses For Wine Corks

Winter is a time for celebration! So pop open a bottle of wine or champagne this holiday season, and don’t forget to save those corks! If you are looking for something creative to do with a collection of wine corks, why not put them to good use in the home? Whether it’s coasters, a trivet, or a beautiful centerpiece for your kitchen table, wine corks are so much fun to work with and the results can be stunning. Here are some creative home and kitchen design ideas that incorporate wine corks in clever ways!

Wine Cork CoastersWine Cork Coasters

Coasters are a simply perfect way to reuse and recycle wine corks, since cork is naturally waterproof. You will need between 25 to 30 corks for this project. You will also need four thin cork circles from the craft store or thin wooden frames, and a hot glue gun with sticks. Using a sharp blade on a cutting mat, slice your corks into two even halves. Arrange and hot glue the corks flat side down on the cork circles or within the square wooden frames. Using your blade cut off any overlap once the glue has dried. Carefully sand down the edges until they are smooth.

Wine Cork Wreath

If you have a large collection of corks, you can make a beautiful wine cork wreath for your front door. You will likely need around 250 corks for this project! You will also need a flat Styrofoam wreath form, Start by wrapping a large roll of burlap ribbon around your Styrofoam form, and adhere with expanding craft glue such as Elmer’s Ultimate.  Once your burlap is in place, arrange your corks in concentric circles starting at the outer edge and working your way in to the center, again using expanding glue that will fill in the cracks. Once your wreath is completed and dry, top with a burlap ribbon bow and a sprig of faux berries or grape leaves.

Wine Cork Hurricane Vase with Candle

For this easy project, you will start with a hurricane jar. Place a tall electric candle in the center, and fill the jar with corks. It’s as simple as that! Plus it makes an absolutely gorgeous statement for very little effort when placed in pairs on the ends of a fireplace mantle.

Wine Cork TrivetWine Cork Trivet

Making a wine cork trivet is similar to making wine cork coasters. Swap out your small cork circles for a thin piece of cork cut into an 8×8-inch square or a square wooden frame. Again, slice your corks into two even halves using a sharp blade on a cutting mat. Arrange and hot glue the corks flat side down on the cork square or within the frame. Using your blade, cut off any overlap once the glue has dried. Carefully sand down the edges until they are smooth.

Wine Cork Centerpiece

Like the hurricane vase, this project is another easy way to decorate with wine corks. Start with an oval tray filled with wine corks. Evenly space three glass candle jars in the tray, nestled in the wine corks. For a designer touch, choose colored glass that compliments your kitchen cabinets. Place a small electric candle in each jar to add ambiance to your kitchen.

How To Create An Affordable Spa Retreat At Home

Sometimes you need a break from the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a luxurious spa retreat right in your own home, without spending a fortune? Your very own place to relax and unwind can be closer than you think with a few simple upgrades. From bathroom vanity trends to beautiful master bedroom tweaks, these spa-inspired additions can all be done without spending a lot of money, or starting a huge renovation right before the holidays.

Roosevelt White with Pewter Mist (Semi-Custom) - Willow Lane CabinetryFind the Space Between Functional and Fabulous.

When it comes to bathroom vanity trends that make your space more spa-like, open shelving is a must-have. Think stacks of fluffy white towels, lotions infused with reviving essential oils, and a jar full of bath salts.

When everything you need to relax is right before your eyes it’s much easier to say yes to a calming soak in the tub or an at-home pedicure. Sleek storage is also a popular feature, which means more places to keep your facemasks and bubble bath. Always keep your “spa shelf” stocked because running out to the store should never be part of a spa day.

Upgrade Your Current Shower to be More Spa-Like.

Can you hear the waterfalls? Oh wait, that’s just your shower! By swapping out your current showerhead for a fancy one you can create a whole new experience without any construction. While some shower upgrades like steam and wall jets may be out of the question at the moment, a new showerhead is totally doable and can be purchased at a reasonable cost. You can get a wider, more powerful stream simply by swapping out your standard showerhead.

Shower tablets are another great way to enhance your shower and bring the calming and invigorating powers of aromatherapy to your bathroom. Simply place the tablets on the floor and let the water activate the scented vapors into the air. Have you stopped thinking about shopping lists yet?

Turn Your Bedroom into a Lounge.

Woman Lounging on Bedroom ChairIf you’re like most of us, you appreciate the time before and after spa services just as much as the services themselves. Lying in a lounge chair with tons of magazines and no interruptions? Yes, please! After you treat yourself to a little pampering at home, you’ll need somewhere to rest after.

If your bedroom lacks the furniture needed to linger, all you need is a chaise or a comfy chair and footrest. Arrange your new furniture in a nook or corner, preferably near a window. Make sure you have a side table to rest a cup of hot tea, plus a candle and a few magazines. Don’t forget some relaxing ambient sound. There are plenty of free resources you can play from your phone such as Calmsound or the Relaxation channel on RadioTunes. Even if it's just twenty minutes to get away, you’ll return to the chaos reenergized and ready to take this season by storm.

Easy Toy Storage Ideas In Time For The Holidays

If you have young children, your house is most likely filled to the brim with toys. It’s easy to get overwhelmed when tiny cars and dolls start creeping from the playroom and bedroom into the kitchen and living room. Stepping over toys in the main living areas is just no fun! Neither is the whining when something they want to play with can’t be found. Now is the time to clear out, clean up, and organize. After all, there will likely be more toys coming in December! Prepare by proactively tackling the toy chaos with these helpful tips.

Little Boy with Toy CarsClear Out And Clean Up

Sit down with your kids and discuss what toys they have outgrown or no longer play with. Give them a paper grocery bag and ask them to choose at least three items they would like to donate to children in need. If your child is having trouble with this task, there are online blogs with great info on how to encourage kids to willingly donate toys from parents who have been there and done that.

After the kids go to bed, assess the situation for yourself and decide what additional items they can live without. This includes toys they never play with, duplicates, or toys that are no longer age-appropriate. Do not get rid of anything they love just because you hate it, or you will regret it later! We’re talking those tiny building bricks with a million pieces that always get lost and wind up under your foot, or a beloved stuffed animal collection that just collects dust. But do throw out any broken toys, hazardous toys, or games with missing pieces.

Organize Your Cabinets

Little Girl in PlayroomOnce you have whittled down the clutter, come up with organizational solutions that make it easy for kids (and parents) to keep things tidy.

Designate an area for toy storage, such as a closet or a playroom wall. Then install ready to assemble (RTA) cabinets to keep everything neatly tucked away and dust-free behind cabinet doors. Make sure there are shelves to hold board games, and clearly labeled bins to sort and group toys accordingly. For example, have a bin for craft supplies, a bin for wooden trains, a bin for super-hero action figures, a bin for play food, and a bin for dress-up clothes. There should be a place for everything, and everything should be in its own place.

Consider a toy box, or large plastic tubs for quick clean up in the designated play area. Add a large wicker basket with a lid to the living room to house any stray toys that might migrate from their bedrooms or play space. With a little preparation now, your home will be stress and clutter-free in time for the holidays. So your living room and kitchen will be ready for entertaining friends and family, with no fear of stepping on a tiny plastic brick!

At The RTA Store we help make your dream kitchen a reality with RTA (Ready To Assemble) and Pre-Assembled kitchen cabinets, and accessories with the same (if not better) quality you would find at any retail store but for a fraction of the price. Stop by our website or give us a call and let us make your kitchen dreams come true with the help of our free kitchen design tool!

3 Ways To Spruce Up Your Home For Holiday Guests

The winter season brings everyone home for the holidays. Whether you are hosting a Thanksgiving feast, housing out of town guests for Christmas, or planning a New Year’s Eve party, you will want your home to look its best for the festivities. From freshening up a guest bathroom, to creating a cozy kitchen with plenty of seating, here are three ways to spruce up your home for holiday guests.

Guest Bathroom VanityPut your best bathroom forward.

Chances are your guests will need to use the restroom while visiting your home. With that said, your guest bathroom should be clean and tidy at all times, since you never know who will drop by with some holiday cheer. This is no easy task when dealing with the small space of a typical powder room or guest bath.

Many powder rooms have a pedestal sink and zero storage solutions. It’s wise to replace a bathroom vanity that lacks storage for something useful (and beautiful at the same time). If you love your pedestal sink, and would prefer to keep it, consider installing a small cabinet above the toilet to house toiletries and an extra roll of toilet paper.

If your guests will be staying for an extended period of time, they will also need access to a full bath. You should equip your guest bathroom with fresh towels, holiday-scented soaps, and other necessities like a hair dryer, shampoo, and toothpaste. Figure out how to organize your bathroom vanity so everything is accessible and easy to find. It’s the small details that make a difference.

Create a comfortable sleeping space.

Overnight visitors will also need a place to sleep. For some, that will be a sofa bed, while for others that might mean a private guest suite. Either way, the goal is to make your guests feel as comfortable as possible.

Winter nights can get chilly, so keep extra blankets and quilts nearby, and make sure you have plenty of pillows on hand. Leave a few empty drawers and some hangers to accommodate clothing, and purchase a small luggage rack. Place an alarm clock near the bed, a lamp, and maybe a few books or local magazines to read. Regardless of the space you have, it should feel like a home away from home thanks to your thoughtfulness.

Roosevelt Khaki - Willow Lane CabinetryMake your kitchen the heart of the home.

Everyone tends to gather around the kitchen, especially during the holiday season. Make your kitchen an inviting space, with plenty of chairs to accommodate guests. Bar stools are great additions to a kitchen island and can offer the extra seating you need.

Make sure kitchen cabinets are fully stocked with glassware, coffee mugs, dinner plates, and dessert plates. Also, make sure your drawers have enough utensils to set a table of at least twelve. Stock your pantry cabinet with snack items, beverages, and hot chocolate for impromptu carolers who may ring your bell. The holidays are a time of giving, so give your guests the gift of an open house and a warm welcome.

Beautiful Ways To Decorate Your Mantel DIY-Style This Autumn

Warming up in front of the fireplace is truly one of the best parts of autumn. Switching out your mantel décor to signify the season is also pretty fun. If you’re like most of us, you’ve already taken to Pinterest to see all the kitchen design ideas and living room décor for fall. It's endless and so tempting to try!

Rather than go with the generic store bought items, we thought we’d mix things up this year and bring a few do-it-yourself (DIY) design ideas to life. Since getting cozy is our number one goal, Let’s fancy up the fireplace! Here are some creative décor options to give your mantle an autumn upgrade.

Pinecones and Leaves Autumn Inspired GarlandDIY Autumn Inspired Garland

All of our favorite fall fireplaces feature garland, and this is definitely one piece of décor you can DIY. Here are a few common themes that we really love.

Leaves: A rustic garland of leaves along a piece of twine is so simple and beautiful. You can press leaves from your own backyard or purchase a pack. Take a look at “leaf bunting” to get some ideas. Add some pumpkins and the results will be dreamy. You could also use different colored crepe paper and a sewing machine to make a strand of paper leaf garland.

Pinecones: If you’re all about rustic minimalism you’ll love pinecone garland. Simply put it together with just a piece of rope or twine, pinecones, and wooden beads. For a mesmerizing (and very shimmery) effect, try adding some gold leaf to your pinecone garland.

Signs: A welcoming message hung by the fireplace is such a sweet way to celebrate the season. One popular autumn inspired idea is a pennant banner made with burlap. By printing the letters and tracing, writing out your message is so easy.

DIY Painted Pumpkins

Pumpkins are in abundance this time of year. By selecting a few different shapes and sizes you can create a fun fireplace mantel with just some paint. You can go with traditional fall colors, or take from the room’s existing color scheme. When in doubt, you can always keep things simple and go with white.

Looking for a little something extra to complement your pumpkin display? Spray paint a few branches gold and place them in a vase for an instant chic touch.

Wreath With Autumn BerriesDIY Autumn Inspired Wreath

Hanging a wreath above your fireplace lights the room up even when the fire is out. Accent your mantel with one of these DIY autumn inspired wreaths.

Fall Berry Wreath: Using a foam wreath form, berries and pruners you can create a cheerful and colorful autumn berries wreath.

Gold Leaf Wreath: Again, we know fall colors aren’t for everyone but luckily gold is both autumn and contemporary at the same time. A gold leaf wreath is stunning and can be put together with just a wreath frame, branches from magnolia trees, and gold spray paint.

3 Tips To Get Your Kitchen Ready For Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving revolves around the kitchen. Whether you are cooking for two or twenty, getting your kitchen ready now will help ensure your holiday goes smoothly on the 24th. From kitchen island ideas to planning a menu and setting a festive table, here are three helpful tips to get your kitchen Thanksgiving-ready, so you can be the host with the most fun and the least stress!

Roosevelt Ginger Vandyke Distress - Willow Lane Cabinetry

#1: Start with a clean kitchen.

If you are lucky enough to have a kitchen island, the holidays are the best time to put it to use! Not only do islands afford extra seating, but they also can serve as a prep station or buffet.

Make sure your island (and the rest of your kitchen) is clean and clutter-free. That means filing away the loose papers that have accumulated, stashing the leftover Halloween candy in the pantry cabinet, and wiping down your cabinet doors, countertops, sink, and floor. And don’t forget the places you can’t see, like the inside of the microwave, fridge, and oven. Your appliances are vital for a successful holiday, and you will be glad you tackled this now and not later.

No one can think clearly when surrounded by a mess. Clean your head and your kitchen so you can sit down and start your menu and shopping list.

#2: Create your menu and shopping list.

Once you have scoured the Internet for recipes and pulled out your favorite holiday cookbooks, it’s time to start creating your menu for the big day. Decide what you are going to make, then print or make copies of all the recipes to put in a folder or binder. This is your Thanksgiving playbook and will make your life so much easier when it comes time to cook.

Next, put together a list of ingredients and the amounts you will need for your feast. And don’t forget extra disposable containers for any leftovers! Check your pantry, refrigerator and freezer to see what you have on hand, and cross off anything you don’t need to buy. Then add the list to your playbook for safe keeping until you are ready to hit the grocery store.

#3: Gather what you need for your table.

Thanksgiving Table DecorationsOnce your menu and shopping list are complete, make sure you have enough serving ware, napkins, utensils, glasses, and dishes. If you are going semi-casual (for easy cleanup), add paper products and clear plastic cups to your list. You will also want to make sure you have enough seating to accommodate your guests.

Naturally, you will want your table to be festive, so gather up all your harvest decorations now. If you are having a formal, sit-down meal you will need an autumn tablecloth or chargers, candles, and a nice centerpiece.

Set the table the night before so things don’t get lost in the shuffle, and make any pies or side dishes ahead of time so you are not leaving everything for the last minute. With a little early prep work, your holiday will be much more enjoyable. Have a happy Thanksgiving!
