Everything And The Kitchen Sink: Comparing Materials For Your Kitchen

Not sure which kitchen sink material is right for your home? Here is a list of common choices, including price range, pros, and cons, to help you make an informed decision!

Stainless Steel

Offset Stainless Steel Apron Front Farmhouse Sink - Willow Lane CabinetryThe most popular choice, stainless steel sinks are heat and stain resistant, and suit any style of kitchen. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes and gauges, with options like a double bowl or a farmhouse sink, plus mirror, satin, or brushed finishes. Choose from apron, top mount, or under mount installation. Stainless steel is not only durable, easy to clean, and attractive, but it is also budget friendly.  You can find a quality stainless steel sink for under $300, with some as low as $150.

Enameled Cast Iron

Enameled cast iron sinks are tough and durable. They serve as an affordable alternative for homeowners who prefer glossy white sinks to stainless steel. Enameled cast iron sinks also come in a variety of other colors besides white, for adventurous decorators looking to add a pop of color to their kitchen. Keep in mind that cast iron is heavy, so make sure your kitchen cabinets are structurally sound before installing your sink. Enameled cast iron is also prone to wear over time, but minor chips can be repaired. Prices range from $300 to $600.

Contemporary Composite Granite Kitchen SinkComposite Granite

According to Better Homes and Gardens, composite granite is an engineered product manufactured using a mix of granite stone dust and acrylic resins molded into sink form. Composite granite sinks comes in a variety of earthy tones, and are great at hiding scratches and stains. They typically fall in the $300 to $500 range. At Willow Lane Cabinetry, our AstraGranite kitchen sinks are made from 80% Quartzite and 20% Acrylic, plus silver ions that kill 99% of bacteria on contact. They can also withstand heat up to 550 degrees and are unaffected by acids or cleaners, making them one of the most durable options for kitchen sinks!

Fireclay

These sinks are made from clay that is fired at a very high temperature, and are a great choice for anyone who desires a white kitchen sink. Fireclay sinks are easy to clean, and are very resistant to stains, scratches and chips.  Fireclay sinks can be found in the $400 to $1000 price range.

Natural Stone

If you are installing a natural stone countertop such as quartz or soapstone, you may desire the seamless look of a matching sink. Although the results are stunning, some natural stone is susceptible to stains and scratches, so be sure to test a sample before you shell out money for this type of sink. Natural stone sinks typically start around $1,000, depending on the stone.

Copper

Copper kitchen sinks are rust-resistant and antimicrobial, making them a great choice for the kitchen. Just avoid harsh chemicals when cleaning. Copper sinks require a little extra care and cost a little more, but it’s worth the time and money when you see how charming your kitchen can look with a uniquely beautiful copper apron front sink as a focal point. Copper sinks vary in cost depending on gauge and handcrafted detailing, but most fall in the $700 to $1500 range.

Hot Hues In The Kitchen (Decorating with Red, Orange, and Yellow)

Enjoy the sunshine inside and out! In celebration of summer, we are dreaming of decorating the home with hot hues. Vibrant shades of red, orange and yellow can invigorate your space, but they can also be tricky to work with. Don’t be left in the dark. Read on to learn how to successfully incorporate hot hues in the kitchen, from walls to kitchen cabinet colors, and everything in between!

Cristezza Club Glass Tile in Ruby Red - Willow Lane CabinetryColor Theory: Red

Red stimulates the appetite, and encourages lively conversations around the table, making it the perfect choice for a pop of color in the kitchen. When painting walls red, start with a primer before applying your color, and then be prepared to give it at least three coats of red paint for even coverage.

Four red walls is a bold choice, but can look amazing, especially when paired with crisp white cabinets. If the thought of that much color intimidates you, opt for a red accent wall, red valances, and red dishes. Willow Lane Cabinetry also offers red finishes in both their Roosevelt and Society Shaker style cabinets, or install a stunning kitchen backsplash with Cristezza Club Glass Tile in Ruby Red.

Color Theory: Orange

Orange Pop-Up Toaster in the KitchenWhat do you get when you blend red and yellow together in perfect harmony? Orange of course! Let us explain. Red (along with blue and yellow) is a primary color, while orange (along with green and purple) is a secondary color. Mixing primary colors together creates secondary colors!

Orange is an energizing color that stimulates productivity in the kitchen, ideal for inspiring creativity in home chefs! Beachy hues like coral, or salmon have a warm touch of red, while citrus tones like tangerine have a fun, tropical vibe and lean more towards the yellow side of the color wheel.

When incorporating orange into your kitchen, a little goes a long way. Add a twist of orange to chair cushions, small appliances, and kitchen linens. Or add wallpaper to an accent wall with a high-contrast geometric white and orange print. Orange looks particularly pretty with sage green kitchen cabinets.

Color Theory: Yellow

Yellow and White Kitchen with Gray FlooringYellow is a warm and happy color that makes a sunny compliment to kitchens, especially when paired with white or gray kitchen cabinets. Pale, buttery yellow looks lovely on kitchen walls, while a bright and golden hue is perfect for an accent color. Use yellow for painted furniture, decorative accessories, or small appliances. Or go for the gold with beautiful brass knobs and cabinet pulls. Don’t be afraid if you already have stainless steel appliances. Mixing metals is right on trend!

Decorating with hot hues can yield spectacular results when done correctly. Too much can be overpowering, while too little can be underwhelming. But with these tips, you can get it just right in time for summer!

Grilling 101: Tips To Become A Grill Master

Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day are just a few holidays synonymous with grilling. Warm weather and long weekends make summer the best time of the year to take your parties outdoors. To ensure your cookouts are the best in the neighborhood, here are some techniques you’ll want to keep in mind before you stock your outdoor kitchen cabinets with all the grilling tool essentials.

Preparation Is Crucial

What’s the difference between a Grill Master and a Grill Mess Up? What happens before the food hits the grill! Yep, prepping is a crucial step. Here are a few tips:

  • Chicken and fish can go straight from the refrigerator to the grill, but pork chops and steaks grill better at room temperature.
  • Chicken benefits from a good brining before being grilled. If possible, let your chicken soak in a salty liquid for at least an hour before you’re going to start grilling.
  • You need to preheat your grill just like your oven. Set it to medium-high before cooking.
  • Season your food generously first. Marinate, salt and pepper both sides, and sprinkle on any other rub or seasoning you like. Do not put barbeque sauce on raw meat! That comes at the end of cooking — otherwise it will burn.
  • Find your positioning. You want your grill to have two zones, one for high heat and one for low. When grilling, you start in the high heat zone to sear the meat and then move to the low heat zone to finish cooking. This avoids meat drying out or getting burned from too much direct heat.

Chicken Drumsticks on the GrillTips For Grilling Chicken

While chicken may be the most classic choice, it is definitely not the easiest. Cooking chicken on a grill requires a little knowledge and patience. When grilling drumsticks and wings, it’s easy to burn up the skin before the piece is fully cooked. To avoid this, start any skinned chicken pieces on the high heat zone and position them skin down. Let them get a little crispy and then move over to low heat to allow them to finish cooking evenly. The same goes with chicken breasts.

Tips For Grilling Steak

With steak, it’s all about the cut. If you want to make a tough cut tender, marinate it before cooking. For rib eye or better cuts of meat, no marinade is needed. Just seasoning and a little olive oil will do. Unless the steak is very thick, you’ll cook it over high heat without moving it. Movement can cause it to sear so be cautious. To tell if it’s done, use the finger test. Press your finger into the center of the steak. If it is:

  • Perfectly Grilling a SteakSoft, it’s rare.
  • Firm with a bit of a spring, it’s medium-rare to medium.
  • Very firm, it’s well done (or possibly overcooked)!

One Last Thing…

Don’t let boredom be the downfall of your cook out. It can be tough standing around the grill while everyone else is having a good time, but don’t channel your energy into what you’re cooking. Moving things around and flipping them unnecessarily can cause the fire to flare up and ruin your meal. Move pieces only when transferring them from the high heat zone to the low heat zone, and always pay attention. Leaving anything on the grill for too long will cancel out everything you did right up until that point.

Sip Into Summer With Iced Coffee And Tea

Coffee or tea? Whichever you prefer, iced is the way to go during the hot summer months! There’s no need to shell out big bucks for fancy beverages at your local coffee shop, when you can make amazing iced coffee and tea at home! Stock your kitchen cabinets with a variety of beans and tea leaves, and let’s get pouring!

For a quick fix refresher, we suggest brewing a 12-cup pot of Joe and pouring it into a pitcher stored in the refrigerator for whenever you need a pick-me-up. You can do the same with a pot of tea, or try cold brew tea bags, fast steeped over ice. If you like a stronger tea that won’t be too watered down as your ice melts, double the tea bags when steeping. Pour some coffee into ice cube trays after brewing, and freeze for later use to keep iced coffee bold.

If you like your beverages sweet, melt in some sugar while your coffee or tea is still hot. Or keep things simple and unsweetened. You always have the option of adding a bit of simple syrup later, if desired. Just bring equal parts water and sugar to a boil in a saucepan to make a syrup, and chill.

Now that you know the expert tips to making a prefect glass of iced tea or coffee, try these fun and unexpected twists on our favorite summer beverage!

Iced Chai TeaIced Chai

Chai is a sweet, spiced tea from India, served with milk or cream. To make a 2-quart pitcher of Iced Chai, boil 6 cups of water, and steep with 6-12 chai tea bags. After 5 minutes, remove the tea bags and add 2 cups of whole milk, plus honey, agave, or sugar, and sweeten to taste. Chill in the refrigerator and serve over ice, garnished with fresh mint.

Salted Caramel Iced Coffee

Salted Caramel Iced Coffee with Whipped CreamStart with 3 pumps of caramel sauce (around 3 tablespoons) in the bottom of a tall glass. Add a shot of hot brewed coffee, and stir to melt. Add 1/8 teaspoon of coarse sea salt and fill your glass halfway with ice. Fill the reminder of the way with coffee and top with light cream to taste. Whipped cream is optional!

For vanilla iced coffee, add a half-teaspoon of real vanilla extract to the mix. Or try chocolate syrup! If you are craving an extra decadent summer treat, add a scoop of vanilla ice cream to any of these beverage recipes and blend!

How To Create The Perfect Space For Outdoor Entertaining

Burgers on the grill, s’mores around the fire pit, and beverages kept on ice in deep kitchen sinks to make beating the heat easy and refreshing — Summer is just around the bend and some of our favorite seasonal pastimes include good food, cold drinks and spending time with great people. When your backyard has all the furnishings for a fun time, daytime barbeques can linger into late night stargazing without work or worry. Turn your backyard into the perfect space for outdoor entertaining with these tips.

Keep the party going with a cozy fire pit.

Whether you love roasting marshmallows or just want an excuse to stay outside, a fire pit will take your outdoor space to a whole new level. Even warm summer days can get chilly in the evening, which is one time when a fire pit is right on the money. You and your guests will eagerly gather around to share stories and laughs way past your bedtime. With an outdoor fire pit you can also indulge in favorite summer snacks like s’mores and other fire pit recipes, and feel just like you’re on a camping adventure without leaving your neighborhood.

Easily transport items from your kitchen to the backyard with a portable cart.

Culinary Prep Kitchen Cart in Stainless Steel – Willow Lane CabinetryStop lugging your kitchen outdoors and get a portable cart that’ll do the work for you. Made of stainless steel, our portable Culinary Prep Kitchen Cart won’t easily weather and makes cleaning up virtually effortless. The top serves as a cutting surface for slicing up limes on the fly or whipping up a quick tomato and avocado salad. You’ll be able to keep everything you need for your outdoor soiree close by with the cart’s top drawer and two lower shelves. The convenient side storage has been designed specifically for holding knives, and the opposite side of this kitchen cart features a rack for hanging a dishrag or cloth. It’s amazing how much you can transport in this cart, and how much easier hosting a backyard get-together will become.

Ready, set, go out and get some games!

Backyard Cornhole TossEveryone loves a little competition; so add some friendly games to your backyard setup to make every gathering a little more amusing. You could easily build a DIY cornhole toss, or find an inexpensive set online. Another fun game for your backyard is bocce, and again you can DIY a court in a day’s time.

Bring the big screen to your backyard.

Another easy way to entertain guests in the summer and make your backyard a magical place is by setting up an outdoor theatre. They sell TV screens especially made for the outdoors, or if you want to keep your budget low, a movie projector is a less expensive option. You can use the side of your house or garage as a screen and project your favorite films right onto the wall. To set the scene, arrange some chairs or other outdoor furniture, put out some snacks, and enjoy your very own outdoor movie night right in the comfort of your yard.

Go Gourmet With Burgers On The Grill

There is just something about summer that makes you crave a thick, juicy burger, hot off the grill. Stock your outdoor kitchen cabinets with all the grilling essentials, like spatulas, long-handled tongs, a grill brush, grill mitts, and a meat thermometer before you get cooking. Then try these amazing twists on the classic burger!

The Classic Burger by Chef Michael Symon

Iron Chef Michael Symon knows a thing or two about meat. His restaurants include Mabel’s BBQ, Roast, and a burger franchise called The B Spot, plus he has a cookbook aptly named Carnivore.  He’s also a popular television personality, as co-host of ABC’s The Chew, where he recently gave us the secret to making the perfect classic burger.

Start with 8 ounces of ground sirloin, 8 ounces of ground short ribs and 8 ounces of ground brisket. Chef Symon recommends mixing meats to create flavor and texture to your burgers — just don’t overwork it! Create four patties slightly larger than the buns, and use your thumb to create an indent in the center. Season your meat with salt and pepper, and place on a hot grill (or griddle). Cook for 5 minutes, flip once and cook on the other side for an additional 5 minutes or until done (burgers should be cooked to an internal temperature of at least 160°F). Serve your burgers on a toasted English muffin or potato roll, topped with American cheese, mayo, mustard, ketchup, pickles, sliced tomato, grilled onions, shredded lettuce, or any way your heart desires. Or try Chef Symon’s recipe for ShaSha Sauce on the Chew’s website!

The Gourmet Burger

Start with the classic burger recipe, and then go gourmet with these burger-topping twists:

The Caprese Burger: Sliced Roma tomatoes, sliced buffalo mozzarella cheese, fresh basil leaves, pesto, and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar.

The Tex-Mex Burger: Cheddar Jack cheese, mesquite-smoked bacon, sliced jalapeños, grilled sweet onions and BBQ sauce.

The Red, White and Blue Burger: Fresh spinach leaves, roasted red peppers, blue cheese crumbles, and red onions sautéed in butter.

The West Coast Burger: Sliced avocado, goat cheese, field greens, sprouts, and Dijon mustard.

The Tropical Burger: Provolone cheese, grilled pineapple, sliced red onion, mayo and teriyaki sauce.

Mushroom Burger: Swiss cheese, mushrooms sautéed in butter, garlic mayo.

Philly Cheesesteak Burger: Grilled bell peppers and onions, provolone cheese, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup.

Buffalo Burger: Blue cheese, ranch dressing, hot sauce, and fried onions.

Southern BLT Burger: Pimento cheese, fried green tomato, Romaine lettuce, and applewood-smoked bacon.

Parmesan Burger: Tomato sauce, Parmesan cheese, mozzarella, and arugula.

3 DIY Natural Cleaners For The Kitchen And Bathroom

Whether you have little kids to look out for, or are just all about green living, these recipes are for you! Natural DIY cleaners take the toxicity out of keeping your home in tiptop shape, and can save you big bucks on your next grocery bill. Here are a few alternatives for some of the most common cleaners used in your home and stored in your kitchen cabinets, and how you can make them in just minutes.

# 1 Glass Cleaner

This simple DIY glass cleaner will be your go-to for getting grime off glass surfaces and shining up mirrors. It has only three ingredients, and the citrus aroma from the lemon cancels out the salad-like scent of the white vinegar. Really, we promise!

What you need: a spray bottle, one lemon, one tablespoon of white vinegar and one cup of hot water

What you do: Squeeze two tablespoons worth of juice from the lemon and then mix it together with the white vinegar and hot water. It’s easiest to do this right in your spray bottle and just shake it up to blend. Use your eco-friendly glass cleaner just as you would a traditional ammonia based chemical solution.

#2 Multi-Surface Cleaner

Essential Oils for the Home

This chemical-free cleaner combines essential oils to clean surfaces in your bathroom and kitchen. It’s easy to make, easy to store (keep it somewhere cool and dark to increase longevity) and works just as well as store bought multi-surface cleaners.

What you need: a spray bottle, one cup of distilled water, one cup of white vinegar, lemon essential oil, and tea tree essential oil

What you do: Mix all your ingredients together in your spray bottle and shake. You’ll want to use about twenty drops each of the lemon and tea tree essential oils. Because of the antifungal and antibacterial properties of these essential oils, you not only get the great refreshing scent but the peace of mind that your surfaces are free of germs!

#3 Bleach Substitute

Think of all the times you’ve grabbed for the bleach to clean up a mess and then hated the lingering scent afterwards. Rid your home of harsh bleach and use one of these safer (and better smelling) combinations instead. You can make either of these bleach alternatives with ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen cabinets or bathroom vanities.

What you need: a spray bottle, hydrogen peroxide, borax, white vinegar, and hot water

What you do: For cleaning grout and mold, make a solution of one-part hydrogen peroxide and three-parts water. Mix it up in a spray bottle and use it to remove problem areas from your tiled floors and surfaces (let sit for an hour before wiping away to deep clean those tough stains). Another great combination to disinfect surfaces is taking three cups of hot water and adding two teaspoons of borax and three tablespoons of white vinegar. You can dunk your sponge or rag right in there and use it to wipe down any surface in your kitchen or bathroom.

Strawberry Spinach Salad

Show your mom you love her “berry” much with this Strawberry Spinach Salad. The perfect start to your Mother’s Day brunch, this salad has ripe strawberries, baby spinach leaves, and a lovely dressing sweetened with honey. Start by rinsing and slicing 1 cup of fresh strawberries in a small colander, and set them aside. Wash baby spinach leaves and add them to your salad bowl about ¾ of the way full.  In a separate bowl, whisk 1/4 cup of balsamic vinegar, 3 tablespoons of honey, 1/2 cup of olive oil oil, 1/4 teaspoon of dry mustard, and salt and pepper to taste. Lightly toss your salad with the dressing, sliced strawberries, and slivered almonds. Top with poppy and sesame seeds.

Brunch Strata

Brunch Strata with Ham, Eggs and Cheddar Cheese

Your main course is rich with fluffy eggs, ham and sharp cheddar cheese, perfectly baked in a prep-ahead casserole. Begin the night before by buttering a large (9×13) baking dish. Break up eight English muffins into large chunks and arrange them evenly in your baking dish. In a separate bowl, whisk 10 eggs with 2 cups of whole milk. Add 1/2 teaspoon of salt and a dash of black pepper. Cut a thick slice of cooked ham (from the deli counter at your local grocery store) into half-inch cubes, and add to the egg mixture. Toss two cups of shredded sharp cheddar cheese with a half teaspoon of flour, and gently fold into the mix. Pour the ingredients into your prepared baking dish, thoroughly covering the English muffins. Cover with foil and refrigerate the Brunch Strata overnight.

An hour before your guest of honor arrives, preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Bake your strata for 45 minutes to an hour, or until set in the middle, removing the cover halfway through baking. Top with a sprinkling of extra cheese, and let your casserole sit for ten minutes before serving.

Cinnamon Coffee Cake

Cinnamon Coffee Cake

Cinnamon Coffee Cake is the finishing touch to your Mother’s Day celebration. Make this dessert the night before, top with powdered sugar and serve with hot herbal tea or coffee. Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, sift a cup of all-purpose flour with 3 teaspoons of baking powder, ½ teaspoon of salt, and ½ cup of granulated sugar. Add ½ of milk, one egg, and 4 tablespoons of melted butter and mix with a wooden spoon until blended. Butter and flour an 8×8 baking dish. Pour your batter into the prepared dish and spread evenly.

In a separate, small bowl combine 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1/2 cup of packed brown sugar, 8 tablespoons of unsalted butter, and 1 1/2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon. Blend well with a fork until it resembles course crumbs and sprinkle evenly on top of the cake batter. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until done.
