The 5 Elements of Beautiful Beach House Style

Whether you live at the beach or just dream of coastal living, it’s easy to bring the ocean indoors with sea-inspired colors and decor! Beach house style incorporates splashes of color and signature elements that enhance the natural beauty of your home. From kitchen cabinets, to furniture, to walls, floors, and accessories, any house can be a beautiful beach house with these easy-breezy tips!

Society Shaker Tidewater - Willow Lane CabinetryKitchen Cabinets

Crisp white is the anchor color of coastal design, making white kitchen cabinets the quintessential choice for a beach house. Clean and classic Shaker style cabinets fit seamlessly in a beach house interior, such as Willow Lane Cabinetry’s Society Shaker White. Or take your inspiration from the sea with Society Shaker Tidewater or Roosevelt Tidewater cabinets. This serene splash of color will be a unique focal point in your coastal kitchen. Pair your cabinetry with oiled rubbed bronze or brushed nickel hardware, and stainless steel or white appliances to complete the look.

Furniture

Greige (gray/brown) is the “it” finish for wood in coastal design. Like driftwood, wood furniture should be weathered and stained to allow the grain to show through. If you prefer painted furniture, opt for a matte finish that is distressed to show some natural wear, in hues of white, blue, aqua, sea foam, or coral. Coastal décor has a casual vibe, so feel free to mix finishes, such as a wood farmhouse table in the kitchen, with painted metal chairs, or a wicker headboard in the bedroom. Sea grass and rattan dining chairs or accent tables are also right on trend, and work perfectly for beach living. In the living room, opt for washable canvas slipcovers in pale hues, or contemporary dark brown leather sofas.

Sandy Beige Bedroom Walls

Take your cue from nature, and paint walls in sea-inspired colors. Classic neutrals like cream and sandy beige compliment coastal walls, and offer a blank canvas for decorating with splashes of bold color like nautical navy or coral. Cool gray tones have a similar effect when paired with pastel colors like aqua and sea foam green. Keep baseboards, interior doors and trim crisp white, and a touch of distinction with shiplap on a large accent wall in a bedroom or great room. A favorite of designer Joanna Gaines of HGTV’s hit show Fixer Upper, shiplap is a popular wall treatment in coastal homes. Beadboard is another welcome addition in small spaces such as a powder room, while board and batten wainscoting is a contemporary and clean look for entryways, laundry rooms, master baths, and dining rooms. For kitchens, opt for a glass tile backsplash in white or coastal hues.

Floors

Above all else, beach house flooring should be easy to clean. Wood is the most popular choice, in a natural, or light to dark brown stain with gray undertones. Casual is key, so avoid the more formal cherry finishes when going coastal. Tile is another excellent choice for a beach house. Today’s tile comes in a variety of sizes and styles to complement your home.

Natural Woven Roman Shades Accessories

Plantation shutters are the ultimate cover for coastal windows, or opt for roman shades made of natural materials paired with semi-sheer linen curtains. Choose throw pillows with zippered shams, in washable, natural fabrics like canvas, linen, or cotton. Decorate with summery throw blankets and rugs, nautical prints, glass jars with shells, and other beachy accents that make you feel like you are on vacation at home! In the kitchen, choose woven linens, dinnerware, and small appliances in coastal colors.

Smart Designs For A Small Kitchen

Bigger isn’t always better. The tiny house craze has already shown us that functionality and comfort can be achieved in homes of all sizes. One room though that, when smaller, is a bit harder to navigate is the kitchen. With necessary appliances, cooking and serving ware, food and cleaning supplies, and a lack of counter and cabinetry space, keeping clutter at bay and even cooking a meal can seem nearly impossible in a small kitchen. However, with these smart design tips, you’ll be able to revamp your small kitchen and reap all the benefits of those loftier kitchens.

Invest In Compact Appliances

Today you can find appliances in all shapes and sizes. While downsizing your dishwasher, refrigerator and oven isn’t always feasible, it is a great space saver for those who can make it work. If your kitchen’s daily function is to serve one to four people, compact appliances may very well be within reach. When giving up your larger appliances, you’ll gain much needed kitchen cabinet space and countertop meal prep surface. See what your kitchen would look like with smaller appliances and new kitchen cabinets using our free kitchen design tool.

Monotone Color Scheme In Small KitchenThink Monotone And Mirrors

The two oldest tricks in the book for creating the illusion of more space are monotone color schemes and mirrors. Incorporate these design hacks into your home by choosing wall paint, flooring and kitchen cabinet colors in a complementary hue. Preferably you want to stay within the same color, deviating only by a shade or two, but there is always room for flexibility. Putting mirrors on the walls that you’d want to have windows is another easy and natural way to make a small space seem larger.

Optimize Your Storage Space

You may think you’re stuck with the storage space you have, but there are many ways to optimize your current cabinets and closets to be more efficient and organized. From kitchen cabinet organizers to racks and labeling systems for pantry cabinets, you can easily increase your space and improve your organization without lifting a hammer. A small budget and a little patience is all you need to amp up the storage space in your small kitchen.

Open Up The Room

Knee Wall in Small KitchenWhat room adjoins your kitchen? Is it the living room or dining room? If your home has a small kitchen and big living room or dining room, consider adopting an open concept floor plan that incorporates two rooms. A kitchen island strategically placed where your dividing wall used to be opens up the room, gives you more countertop and storage space, and increases your seating capacity. If a full remodel isn’t in the budget, consider eliminating the upper part of one wall to mimic the open-air feel. You won’t be able to steal any square footage from your living room or dining room, but this will fix the problem of a small, stuffy kitchen.

Red, White and Blue Recipes For Independence Day!

Show off your patriotic pride with these awe-inspiring red, white and blue recipes, and add a little extra spark to your July 4th festivities!

Red White and Blue Burger

Fire up the grill, and sink your teeth into this mouthwatering twist on an Independence Day favorite. Skip the usual toppings and wow the crowd with grilled sweet onions and red bell peppers, plus a generous helping of fresh blue cheese.

Start by combining a pound of ground sirloin, with a pound of ground chuck. This should make 6-8 burgers depending on size. Just don’t overwork it! Create patties slightly larger than the buns, and use your thumb to create an indent in the center. Set aside.

Slice 2 large red bell peppers and 1 large sweet onion into 1-inch strips and combine in a bowl. Drizzle on a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Stir well and pour your veggies into a grill basket. Place the grill basket of veggies on the hot grill to start cooking slightly ahead of the burgers.

Season your burgers with salt and pepper, and place on the grill alongside the veggies. Set the timer for 5 minutes, then give the veggies a good stir and flip your burgers to the other side. Grill for an additional 5 minutes or until done. Burgers should be cooked to an internal temperature of at least 160°F, and veggies should be softened but still slightly firm, and have a nice char. Add a slice of blue cheese (or a scoop of crumbled blue cheese) to the burgers the last minute of cooking. Serve your burgers with melted blue cheese on soft and crusty Ciabatta rolls, topped with grilled red peppers and onions, and a side of blue corn tortilla chips.

Red White and Blue Cupcakes

The colors of the American Flag shine in this spectacular yet simple semi-homemade dessert, perfect for celebrating Independence Day! Start by placing white cupcake liners in a cupcake-baking pan. Preheat your oven and prepare white boxed cake mix according to package directions. Divide the batter into three separate bowls. Add red food coloring to the first bowl, blue food coloring to the second, and leave the third white. Start by adding a spoonful of blue batter in each cup to form the first layer. Next, spoon the white batter on top of the blue, and then add the red last, so each cup is 2/3 full. Lightly tap the sides on the pan to allow the batter to evenly spread and smooth out. Bake as directed on the box until done, and cool on a wire rack. Allow your cupcakes to cool before icing with vanilla frosting. Then top your frosted cupcakes with festive red, white and blue sprinkles, take a bite, and watch the fireworks happen!

3 Spectacular Summer Cocktails To Sip On

From fruity to frosty, summer cocktails can really help you beat the heat! When guests drop by for summer gatherings, fire up the grill, fill up those deep kitchen sinks with ice, bottled water and beer, and whip up a few pitchers of spectacular summer cocktails. Here are a few of our favorite adult beverages to sip in the summer sun, courtesy of some of our favorite foodies.

Clinton Kelly’s Sweet Tea Sangria

Clinton Kelly, co-host of ABC’s hit daytime show The Chew, is famous for his creative libations. His Sweet Tea Sangria is ripe with summer fruits for a refreshing twist on the classic sweet tea. Start by heating four quarts of water to a near boil, and stir in ½ cup of sugar until dissolved. Add four tea bags and steep for 10 minutes. Then allow your sweet tea to chill in the fridge before crafting this cocktail.

In a large pitcher, mix four cups of sweet tea with a bottle of white wine. Add two cups of sliced strawberries, two cups of sliced peaches, and chill for two to eight hours. Serve in a tall glass over ice with a shot of bourbon, and garnish with fresh mint leaves. For a non-alcoholic twist, omit the bourbon and add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice instead. Sweet tea is the perfect summer sipper, and this spectacular summer cocktail takes a classic to the next level!

Pitcher of Mojito LimeadeBobby Flay’s Mojito Limeade

The quintessential beverage garnish, limes reach their peak flavor in the summer. Let them take center stage by whipping up a pitcher of Mojito Limeade, courtesy of Chef Bobby Flay. This Food Network star knows a thing or two about summer grilling, and cocktails! But first, make a lime-mint simple syrup by bringing two cups of sugar and two cups of water to a low boil. Remove from the heat and add two zested limes, and ½ a cup of mint leaves and let sit at room temperature for a half hour to infuse the flavors. Strain out the mint and zest and refrigerate covered until cooled.

Start the cocktail by muddling ½ cup of fresh mint leaves, and two limes cut into wedges, with two cups of crushed ice in a large pitcher. Add a cup of lime-mint syrup, a liter of white rum, and ½ cup of fresh lime juice. Top with ice and club soda. Sure lemonade is refreshing, but the sweet tart taste of Mojito Limeade may just be a new summer favorite!

Watermelon CoolerMartha Stewart’s Watermelon Cooler

This sparkling adult beverage is delicious and makes a pretty presentation. So naturally, it comes courtesy of Martha Stewart! Puree 3 pounds of watermelon in a food processor to start, and set aside. Muddle two tablespoons of fresh mint leaves with a tablespoon of fine sugar in a large pitcher, and then fill the pitcher with ice cubes. Stir in two cups of watermelon puree, one and ¼ cups of ginger ale, ¼ cup of vodka, a tablespoon of fresh lemon juice, and three or four splashes of bitters. Garnish your pitcher of Watermelon Cooler with fresh mint and enjoy the fruits of summer!

5 Hallmarks Of A Contemporary Kitchen

Each type of kitchen style or theme has a few hallmarks that designers and DIYers alike can call out. These distinguished features range from more concrete additions like kitchen cabinets and flooring, to less permanent components like décor and paint colors. For contemporary kitchens these are some of the common characteristics that we often see and almost always love.

Glass Tile Backsplash

While there are ample backsplash options that would work in a contemporary kitchen there is something so chic about a glass tile backsplash in a neutral color. We see white, light taupe, and gray used frequently, mostly for its streamline effect. A backsplash in these faint colors doesn’t call for your attention like many backsplashes do. The finished product is an understated but beautiful addition to a contemporary kitchen, and an easy way to stay on track with your up-to-date theme.

Society Shaker Black - Willow Lane CabinetryDark Kitchen Cabinets

In the same way light colors seem open and airy, dark colors feel personal and intimate. Since contemporary kitchens tend to lack obvious character, their personality is found through simplistic design and an artistic approach to more traditional functions. In regards to cabinetry, there is definitely a preference towards dark kitchen cabinets when executing a contemporary design. Dark cabinets are dramatic and provide a strong visual contrast to other elements in the room such as the walls and flooring. Dark chocolate and espresso finishes also look stunning next to the sleek, stainless steel appliances that are mainstays in modern kitchens.

Modern Hardware

Your cabinet knobs and pulls can make or break your kitchen theme. In contemporary kitchens, that means hardware that is sleek and subtle. This is one time when less is definitely more. Go with smooth edges like seen in the Verona Collection or Torino Collection from Elements by Hardware Resource. Both speak to simplicity, with a cool and modern feel that will enhance any contemporary style of cabinetry

Clutter Free Countertops

Clutter-Free Kitchen CountertopsWhere a cottage, vintage, or even traditional style kitchen might benefit from odd and ends strewn about — a contemporary kitchen most definitely does not. Contemporary design is all about minimalism, and that goes for clutter as well! Don’t go crazy with décor and keep clutter at bay with ample storage. Drawer and cabinet organizers are a great way to give everything its place, and make finding stuff a whole lot easier too. Installing a kitchen island is another way to amp up storage space, and can even offer a discreet placement for your dishwasher or wine fridge.

Elements of Surprise

Contemporary kitchens often include somewhat of a shock value. We see it in many clever ways, such as the aforementioned hidden kitchen island appliances, or more blatant technological advances. From smart kitchens that can be turned on with the swipe of your phone to refrigerators that can brew coffee, a contemporary kitchen is typically also a technologically savvy one. Maybe it is simply a commonality between owners of modern homes — a lover of contemporary design is usually also a fan of technology. Either way, we rarely come across a contemporary kitchen that doesn’t boast some sort of element of surprise.
