How To Pamper Mom At Home This Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is May 10, 2020, and although the way we celebrate may be different this year, the sentiment is still the same. Moms wear many hats, especially these days. This is our chance to acknowledge all of her hard work, unconditional love, and constant care. Here are some thoughtful ways to pamper mom at home this Mother’s Day.

Have fresh flowers delivered right to her doorstep.

There are many flower companies offering no-contact delivery right to your doorstep. Help support small business and give your local florist a call to see what type of arrangements are available for Mother’s Day. A beautiful bouquet placed on the kitchen island or breakfast table can really brighten up the entire kitchen — and mom’s special day! Your thoughtful gift of fresh flowers is sure to put a smile on her face every time she walks into the room.

Stock her wine storage cabinet with all of her favorites.

Does mom love a nice glass of wine? It is easier than ever to get alcohol delivered, and your go-to grocery or liquor store is likely offering this service. Treat her to a couple of bottles of her favorite white and red, so that her wine storage cabinet is stocked while homebound. If you want to make this Mother’s Day gift even more special, send her a bottle that she ordered on your last family vacation or that you drank while celebrating a special event. Include a note reminding her of why this wine is sentimental for a jog down Memory Lane. Or if she loves trying new wines, gift her a wine subscription that sends bottles based on personality or favorite flavors.

4-28-20 WLC2-Mother Daughter Mani PediHelp her recreate her favorite spa or salon treatment.

Mom is probably missing a beauty treatment or two, so do what you can to bring the spa or salon home to her. While some services are better left on pause (home haircuts usually don’t end well), there are plenty of ways to help her refresh and relax in her very own bathroom. Pick a treatment, and then put together a gift basket with all of the goodies she’ll need. Here are some ideas for an at-home salon gift:

Mani/Pedi:

  • A neck massager (the next best thing to those plush massage chairs)
  • Softening foot mask to nourish dry skin
  • Nail polish remover and file
  • Classic nude nail polish for a foolproof application

Color/Style:

  • Color enhancing shampoo
  • Conditioning hair mask for deep hydration
  • Blow dryer brush for easy styling
  • Root cover up spray to use until she can get back to the salon

Bring her favorite dining experience home.

Since mom can’t have dinner at her favorite restaurant this year, find a way to bring that same dining experience to life at home. Order her favorite dishes to go and set up the dining room in style. You can take out the good serving ware, light a few candles, and even print out a menu. Afterwards, head to the TV room and rent that movie she recently missed in theaters. You can still create the ultimate dinner and movie night while staying safe at home.

3 Seasonal Cocktails For Wine Lovers

You don’t need to go out to enjoy a delicious wine cocktail. Head right over to your home bar and whip up one of these enticing spring recipes. By combining your favorite wine with some of the season’s most scrumptious flavors, you can indulge in a tasty cocktail in the privacy and comfort of your home.

  1. French 75

You should have at least one bottle of bubbly in your wine storage cabinet, so pop some champagne and put together this classic cocktail. The French 75 (or Soixante Quinze) has been around for over 100 years and should be served in a champagne flute with a lemon twist. But don’t let the fruit fool you. This champagne cocktail may be slightly sweet and citrusy but it packs a serious kick.

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz. gin
  • 2 oz. champagne
  • ¾ oz. freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • ¾ oz. simple syrup

Directions:

Grab a cocktail shaker from your bar cabinet and pour in your gin, lemon juice, and simple syrup. Fill with ice and shake vigorously for about 20 seconds. Strain your mixture into a flute, top with champagne, and serve with a lemon twist.

Sangria

  1. Springtime Sangria

Make the most of the season’s fresh fruit with a juicy spring Sangria. This wine cocktail is a favorite year long — but it’s especially delicious when you combine white wine with ripe strawberries or oranges. Pick your favorite bottle of dry white wine from your wine storage cabinet to use as the base for your spring Sangria. The optional addition of brandy adds bold flavor, and you can control the sweetness by using either club soda or a lemon-lime soda. Serve in a large pitcher and enjoy on your backyard patio.

Ingredients:

  • 750 ml. bottle of chilled dry white wine
  • ¼ cup brandy
  • ¼ cup to ⅔ cup of white sugar
  • 1 to 2 cups of club soda or lemon-lime soda
  • Fresh seasonal fruit (such as strawberries, oranges, pineapple or cherries)

Directions:

Sangria can be made a few hours before, or left over night, so that the flavors really marinate. Combine all of your ingredients (except your soda) into a large pitcher, and stir until the sugar is dissolved. Before serving, add one to two cups of either club soda or lemon-lime soda (depending on how sweet you like your Sangria). Serve in white wine glasses.

  1. Rosé-Aperol Spritz

This springtime version of an Aperol Spritz from Bon Appetit is as pleasant as it is pink, so you’ll want to stock your bar cabinet with Aperol a little earlier this year. By swapping Prosecco with a bottle of sparkling rosé and adding passion fruit juice, this Italian, wine-based cocktail turns a blushing shade of soft pink. If you love an Aperol Spritz in summer, fall in love with a Rosé-Aperol Spritz this spring.

Ingredients:

  • 750 ml. bottle of sparkling rosé
  • ¾ cup passion fruit juice
  • ¼ cup Aperol
  • ¼ cup freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 4 tsp. sugar
  • Grapefruit (optional garnish)

Directions:

In a large pitcher, mix the Aperol, passion fruit juice, lime juice, and sugar. Once the sugar is completely dissolved, stir in the sparkling rosé. Serve your Rosé-Aperol Spritz over ice in a large wine glass and garnish with a grapefruit wedge.

7 Simple Ways To Go Green At Home

If preserving the planet is a priority to you, but you’re not sure how you can help, start at home! There are so many opportunities to make your household a little greener, and Earth Day is the perfect time of year to put some new practices in place. Keep scrolling for seven simple ways to go green at home this Earth Day.

  1. Learn how to recycle the right way.

When we recycle, we help to preserve the planet’s natural resources. But even those of us who recycle regularly have questions. Is this peanut butter jar okay to recycle? What about a pizza box?

Recycling isn’t as straightforward as just paper and plastic. This Earth Day, take some time to learn how to recycle the right way and educate your family members about the best practices in your community.

  1. Install a double pull out trash bin into your all wood cabinetry.

Once you’ve mastered recycling, make it easy to sort your trash and recyclable items with a double pull out trash bin. These pre-assembled kitchen cabinet accessories are easy to install right into your all wood cabinetry.

Having a second bin solely dedicated to recyclable items makes it easier than ever to ensure you are sorting your trash properly and getting your recycling into the right place.

  1. Plant a garden in your backyard.

Growing your own food and spices is a wonderful way to make your home greener and get your family to connect with nature. If you’re a beginner gardener, start with something that is easy to grow.

There’s no need to plant an entire garden today. Herbs and tomatoes are excellent, low-maintenance options to start with. And who knows? After your first successful harvest, you might be ready to expand.

  1. Stop paper statements.

If you manage your bills and banking online but have yet to actually pull the plug on paper statements, now is a great time. In most cases, there’s no need to receive a paper statement when you can access and download your statements online.

The option to stop paper statements can usually be found where you log into your account to make a payment. With just one click of a button, you can reduce your carbon footprint and save some trees.

  1. Depend on natural light as much as possible.

When you wake up in the morning and the sun is shining through your kitchen, do you really need to turn on the lights? Get in the habit of relying on natural light and you’ll find yourself less likely to hit that switch.

You can also make using artificial light more eco-friendly by swapping out your light bulbs for energy efficient types. This is especially important if your home has few windows or you live in an area where daylight is limited.

  1. Replace single-use items with reusable alternatives.

Single-use items like plastic bags and water bottles are convenient — but they are also detrimental to our planet. Luckily, there are many amazing reusable alternatives that you can start using instead.

Some common examples are reusable water bottles, shopping bags, and food storage containers. By stocking a kitchen cabinet or drawer with these reusable options, you can start reducing waste instantly.

  1. Try at-home composting for the first time.

Composting might sound scary and messy, but it’s actually pretty simple. In fact, all you need to successfully compost in your home is a bin with a lid. Many everyday food items can be composted, such as coffee grounds and egg shells.

Composting reduces waste that normally would end up in a landfill and allows you to create soil that can be used to supplement your new garden!

A Guide To Nature-Inspired Hues For The Home

If you are longing to bring a touch of the outdoors in, consider painting your walls in an on-point color inspired by Mother Nature. Here are a few contemporary, organic hues that will compliment your all wood cabinetry and natural stone countertops beautifully.

Natural Beauty

When you gaze out the window, what do you see? From the azure blue sky above to the rocks and grass below, there is a world of color right outside your door. Sunny yellows, mossy green, and watery shades of aqua and dark blue are all trending on Pinterest boards and the covers of your favorite home magazines.

There is a reason Behr chose Back to Nature as its 2020 Color of the Year. Such nature-inspired hues work well in traditional and contemporary kitchens alike, and are timeless choices for fabric and walls. Why? Because they pair perfectly with other natural elements, like all wood cabinetry, quartzite and granite countertops, and marble flooring and backsplash tile.

4-17-20 WLC2-Providence Natural GreyEarthy Neutrals

For homeowners who prefer a neutral color palette, earthy shades of beige and gray are the natural choice. Whether you opt for a deep gray like Stormy Monday by Benjamin Moore or the soft and subtle Agreeable Gray by Sherwin Williams, with warm brown undertones, gray is a timeless neutral for contemporary kitchens and other interior spaces throughout the home. In fact, some of our most popular cabinet styles come in a gorgeous gray finish!

Brown hues are also a classic yet contemporary choice for the home. From creamy white and sandy beige to the rich and leathery Tanner’s Brown by Farrow and Ball, brown is one of our favorite neutrals. You’ll also see brown pop up in on point accessories, like oil rubbed bronze hardware, copper kitchen sinks, rustic wood furniture, and wood-look tile flooring. And don’t forget all wood cabinetry!

Antique furniture in dark bedroomJewel Tones

If your tastes lean more towards the bold and bright, you’ll find an abundance of vibrant color in nature — especially when you turn your attention to jewel tones. These gems work well for accent walls, fabric and accessories, and offer a gorgeous pop of vivid color that can liven up any space. Or, feel free to surround yourself in sumptuous color, like emerald, turquoise, amethyst, or jade! From Ruby Red glass backsplash tile to moody, dark blue decorative accents, jewels tones are an unexpected and lovely way to invite Mother Nature inside.

How To Bake Your Own Artisanal Bread In The Kitchen

There is nothing quite as tempting to the senses as a freshly baked loaf of artisanal bread. The aroma, as it drifts throughout the kitchen. Kneading the dough, watching it rise and bake, and then feeling the warmth as you pull your bread from the oven. The crisp sound of falling crumbs as you cut into the crust to get to the soft and tender inside. That delectable first bite, dripping with melted butter. No matter how you slice it, homemade artisanal bread is rustic comfort food at it’s finest. And while it may look tricky to achieve at home, baking your own bread is really rather simple. Here, we’ve gathered a few easy to follow recipes for the beginner bread artisan. They all call for basic ingredients found in your kitchen pantry cabinet, and no fancy tools are required. So, spread some flour on your kitchen island countertop, and let’s get started!

This Homemade Artisan Bread from Sally’s Baking Addiction is the perfect first recipe for beginners. It calls for just four ingredients—yeast, bread flour, water and salt—and is virtually foolproof. This Easy Homemade Wheat Bread from Minimalist Baker is a bit heartier, with wheat flour, millet, and oats. We love this fragrant Savory Herb Bread from The Stay At Home Chef. It’s easy to make and can be mixed by hand with little effort. Cinnamon Raisin Bread

Loaded with spicy cinnamon and juicy raisins, this sweet bake from Fifteen Spatulas is perfect for breakfast. But first, you will need to pull up your heavy duty mixer. Smart Lighting Tech Features For The Home

If you’ve been wanting to introduce smart lighting features into your home but aren’t sure where to start, let this guide light the way! Technology is taking lighting to a whole new level, and we’re sharing four of our favorite features to set up in your home today.

1.Kitchen Lighting

Smart features are becoming a staple in modern kitchen design. We have ovens that can be turned on from our phones and refrigerators that you can see into without opening the door. It’s really incredible how technological advancements are simplifying our lives and helping us save energy in our homes.

Smart lighting is another feature that you can incorporate into your modern kitchen design and the kitchen is a great room to introduce smart lighting for the first time.

Anywhere you have a light bulb — from under your custom cabinets to above your kitchen island — you can have a smart light bulb. Switching out the bulbs in your kitchen is a great first step. These smart bulbs can be connected to your WiFi so that you can control them from an app.

This power comes in handy if you forget to shut off the lights after leaving the room. It’s also wonderful if you want the brightness over your custom cabinets to be more intense than other lighting in the room when cooking or preparing meals.

Smart Home Device - Home Automation - Internet of Things2. Smart Switches And Plugs

If you’re sold after testing out smart lighting in the kitchen, consider installing smart switches and plugs throughout your home. This will transform all of the lighting in your home into smart lighting.

You’ll be able to control each room in your home from an app, even before walking in the front door. The benefits of this are endless. For example, imagine you’re heading out for the evening, it’s dark, and you’re trying to navigate your exit. With smart switches and plugs installed, you can leave the lights on while you leave, and then shut them off from your phone once you’re safely inside your car.

3. Digital Assistants

For even more ease of use, smart lighting can be synced with your favorite digital assistant, such as Amazon Alexa or Apple Siri. Rather than controlling your smart lighting from an app on your phone or tablet, you can ask Alexa or Siri to do so for you.

Picture you and your family are settled in for movie night in your TV room. The film is about to start but the lighting is leaving a little bit of glare on the screen. When your smart lighting is synced with a digital assistant, you can simply ask Alexa or Siri to dim the lights for you.

4. Intuitive Functions

Beyond app and voice control, smart lighting can even make decisions without you. Let’s say you prefer waking up to a well lit room than a blaring alarm clock. You can set your lighting to turn on at a certain time in the morning just like your coffee machine.

Smart lighting can also react to certain triggers. Maybe you do like waking up to your alarm clock, for example, but you’re a bit groggy crawling out of your bed. If you use a fitness tracker, you can sync it to your smart lighting. When your fitness tracker learns that you’re awake for the day, your kitchen lighting will turn on, so that you have an easier time finding your favorite coffee mug in the morning.

Growing A Kitchen Herb Garden

Last spring, we taught you how to cook with fresh herbs. And while you know the culinary techniques and are familiar with the flavors, have you ever considered growing your own herb garden? It may seem intimidating, especially if you lack a green thumb, but fresh herbs are actually quite easy to cultivate. All you need are some pretty pots, good soil, the right plants, and a sunny spot on a kitchen island or windowsill. Here is everything you need to know about growing a kitchen herb garden.

Pots

While a large planter box works well outdoors, pots are more suited for indoor gardening. A pretty collection of pots has a decorative element that can compliment your all wood cabinetry and decor. Pots also make it possible to move your herbs around the kitchen as needed. Herbs will grow to the space they are given, so it is wise to limit the size of your containers to ten inches in diameter when potting herbs indoors. Look for deep pots that are lightweight and made from a durable material. Good choices for herbs include terracotta, glazed ceramic, plastic, resin, or stainless steel. Make sure there is an adequate drainage hole and a lip to collect excess water.

Soil

To successfully grow herbs indoors, you should opt for a high-quality soil. You can find commercial potting soils at your local gardening center that are specifically suited for herbs, with the right nutrients, acidity and moisture level — or shop online. Everyone knows you can score a better deal shopping online for quality, all wood cabinetry, and the same holds true for soil. If you are feeling ambitious, you can also try making your own potting soil for containers and pots, as recently taught here in The Old Farmer’s Almanac.

4-3-20 WLC2-Tuscan Almond Glaze

Plants

Here are ten of the best herbs for container gardening indoors.

  1. Basil
  2. Chives
  3. Cilantro
  4. Lemon Balm
  5. Mint
  6. Oregano
  7. Parsley
  8. Rosemary
  9. Sage
  10. Thyme

Care

Most herbs need moisture to grow, without being soggy. Therefore, it’s best to check the soil regularly and to water your plants before the top layer of soil starts to feel dry. Be sure to add a water soluble fertilizer to your herbs once a month and mist to provide humidity. Herbs also need at least six hours of indirect sunlight to grow. Herbs do well indoors because they prefer warm temperatures, ideally between 65-75 degrees. Cold drafts can harm your plants, so place your herbs high up on a kitchen island or near a sunny window.
