Willow Lane Cabinetry’s Favorite Cabinets For Fall

While summer is grand, there is surely something mystical and romantic about the start of fall. With the drop in temperature, changing leaves, and resurgence of Pumpkin Spice we can’t help but get excited about the new season.

To go along with all things fall we’re rounding up a few of our favorite dark kitchen cabinets. Halloween is right around the corner, but these selections are far from spooky. In fact, they are deeply rich, and very reminiscent of all the chocolate and hot cocoa we’ll be consuming in the upcoming months. So light your favorite fall candle, sip on something Pumpkin Spice, and browse our favorite cabinets for fall.

1. Manchester Shaker Brandywine

Fall has the perfect weather for a nightcap, and brandy is a delicious after dinner drink. It’s also the inspiration behind the rich brown finish of our Manchester Shaker Brandywine kitchen cabinets, which is much like the caramel color of this aged spirit.

Along with the hypnotizing finish of these dark kitchen cabinets, they also possess a pristine craftsmanship that brings the traditional Shaker style to a whole new level of luxury. Enhance these cabinets by following one of the latest kitchen island trends of mixing and matching finishes. Choosing a kitchen island in a darker finish than your cabinets allows you to add an interesting contrast to the room.

Roosevelt Harvest with Black Accent - Willow Lane Cabinetry2. Roosevelt Harvest with Black Accent

This unique finish features a warm brown foundation with subtle black accents. A touch of black highlights the intricate details on these raised panel cabinets. A traditional but interesting style, the Roosevelt Series really ties into the transitional kitchen theme that is gaining popularity. Part classic, part contemporary, transitional cabinets work with a variety of designs and can complement the look of new appliances.

The finish on our Roosevelt Harvest with Black Accent cabinetry is particularly transitional, as it has the familiarity of warm, natural wood with the interesting addition of black. As far as dark kitchen cabinets go, these are definitely a top choice.

3. Roosevelt Teaberry

Like a decadent bar of dark chocolate, the Teaberry finish is the perfect balance of strong and sweet. Both sophisticated and welcoming, it practically begs you to make a warm drink, and cozy up at the table with a good book or someone you love.

With fall comes the start of the holiday season, and there is certainly something to be said about a kitchen made for entertaining. While we might be biased, we’re pretty obsessed with the Roosevelt Teaberry. It manages to be both strikingly beautiful and incredibly approachable at the same time, and that is a tough combination to beat.

4. Roosevelt Black Distress with Firework Highlights

Roosevelt Black Distress with Firework Highlights - Willow Lane CabinetryThis list of fall favorites wouldn’t be complete without the Roosevelt Black Distress with Firework Highlights collection. It reminds of us sitting around a campfire, roasting up some marshmallows, and making S’mores. This set features a pure black finish with fiery red highlights strategically placed to make the fine details pop.

Its unlikely contrast opens the room up for so many possibilities. Have a thing for modern kitchen hoods? Want to incorporate one of the new kitchen island trends, like mixing and matching finishes? Because this finish is slightly unconventional, you can express your creative side, and make your kitchen more than just a room for cooking and eating.

3 Clever Ways to Keep Your Kitchen Organized

Tame the kitchen chaos with clever (and affordable) ways to keep your kitchen organized. Prepping and cooking meals is so much easier in an uncluttered space.  From kitchen cabinets to under sink storage, everything has a place!

Installing Inside Cabinet Accessories

Chrome Base Organizer - Willow Lane CabinetryKitchen cabinets offer a wealth of storage, especially when you install helpful inside cabinet accessories. Kitchen cabinet pull out ideas include tray dividers, cookware organizers, and pull outs with shelves. Install door mounted cutting boards, and spice racks. Add cutlery trays, knife blocks, and peg systems inside cabinet drawers. Corner cabinets are a challenge that can be easily remedied with a Lazy Susan.

Organizing Under The Kitchen Sink

Kitchen sink organization doesn’t have to be a chore. There is a ton of space just waiting to be filled, especially if your sink is housed in a large kitchen island. Tilt out kitchen sink storage trays are a great way to utilize a faux drawer. Store sponges and scrub brushes neatly tucked away in an otherwise wasted space. Beneath the kitchen sink is the perfect place to keep cleaning supplies and a pull out waste container.

Setting Up A Pleasant Pantry

If it’s difficult to find food in your pantry cabinet it’s time to rethink your current system. Start by grouping like items, and then organize your pantry staples in clear bins or baskets. Label each basket so that everything is easy to find, and accessible. Store everyday items on the middle shelves, heavy items like canned goods on the bottom shelf, and less-used items like cookbooks on the top shelf. Purge any food that is past its prime.

Keep countertops organized and clean. Once everything has a place you can set aside any remaining kitchen gadgets to be donated, or recycled. This includes the bread maker you received as a wedding gift ten years ago but never opened, the broken electric can opener, and the duplicate spatulas taking up valuable drawer space. If it’s not something you absolutely need and use, get rid of it. De-cluttering can de-stress your life. After all, the kitchen is the heart of the home and you want that heart to be as healthy as possible!

How To Make Your Home Look “Expensive” Without Breaking The Bank

Do you watch HGTV and browse through home magazines all day long? Are your Pinterest boards filled with kitchen design ideas and home décor inspirations? Do you sit at your desk and daydream about your current home and how it would look if you could afford to make changes? Are you building a new house while sticking to a budget?

It really is possible to achieve a high-end look without spending a fortune. You just need to know how! Here are some budget-friendly tips to creating the upscale (and affordable) home of your dreams.

First, pace yourself.

Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither was your house. Therefore, decorating a home should take time as well. You may want everything to be perfect right away, but that just isn’t realistic. A home should be filled with thoughtful, personal items. It should not be slapped together.

Neutral Living RoomTake the time to browse antique and resale shops for unique, upscale, and vintage furniture. These timeworn pieces are often better quality and a better bargain than buying new. Don’t be afraid of getting your hands dirty. Sometimes all you needs is a little paint or light refinishing to make something shine again. Then update your piece with new hardware, and be set to impress!

Think like a professional designer.

You may have noticed there are some key elements to high-end homes after all those hours spent pinning and watching home shows. Walls are usually awash in neutrals with crisp white trim and molding. Neutral colors have a calming appeal and serve as the perfect blank canvas for the surrounding decor. Large upholstered pieces are also neutral, with pops of color, pattern and texture reserved for accessories like throw pillows and drapes, or an accent chair. Overall, the furniture has clean, classic lines. Ensure the space has ample storage to contain any clutter. Keep these elements in mind when selecting colors, shopping, and decorating.

Know where to splurge and where to save.

Dated light fixtures can be an eyesore, and can negatively affect the quality of light in a room. A pretty new chandelier in the dining room or some well-placed sconces can have a huge visual impact for very little money. The same goes for custom details like a tile backsplash in the kitchen, or framed mirrors in the bathroom.

Paint is one of the least expensive updates in a home. When you start with fresh walls in a neutral tone, you can then begin to accessorize. It’s no secret that interior decorators shop at stores like Home Goods, or online sites for home décor. You can find beautiful, designer items for the home such as bedding, area rugs, art, table linens, and mirrors at a fraction of the cost by knowing where to buy.

Manchester Shaker Brandywine – Willow Lane CabinetryGet the most bang for your buck.

Tips For Decorating The Feng Shui Way

Feng shui may be an ancient Chinese practice, but it is still widely incorporated into interior design today. Feng shui involves harmonizing the beauty and comfort of your room with your physical and mental health. This fusion makes an alignment between your environment and your soul. The choices you make in your home can produce a calm, happy vibe while making the most of your space. And there are plenty of easy, down to Earth tweaks you can make without spending a fortune! Read on to learn the best kitchen design ideas and tips for making your rooms flow the feng shui way!

In The Kitchen

The kitchen is one of the most important spaces in the home for health and well-being, and is a feng shui symbol of wealth and prosperity. It is also the perfect place to incorporate the five Chinese elements that are an important part of feng shui: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. Think beautiful wood cabinetry, fire from the stove, natural stone countertops, stainless steel appliances, and running water at the kitchen sink.

Manchester Shaker Black (Semi-Custom) - Willow Lane CabinetryPeople tend to gravitate towards the kitchen. As the heart of the home, it should be a place of positive energy. Opt for bright paint colors, and bring nature inside with live plants. Be sure to let the sunshine in with as much natural light as possible. A window above the sink is ideal, as is as an open floor plan. Countertops and cabinets should be balanced, as well as clean and organized.

Make your kitchen as inviting as possible by taking advantage of Willow Lane Cabinetry’s free kitchen design tool, and create the beautiful kitchen of your dreams. What are you waiting for? From wood cabinetry with clean lines to kitchen cabinet organizers for a clutter-free space, you can utilize the principles of feng shui to transform your kitchen into a place that makes you happy.

In The Dining Room and Foyer

Keep hallway entrances and exits clear of obstacles and clutter to create an element of airiness.

Place a large mirror opposite the dining table to enhance natural light, and help the room appear bigger. Keep your table in proportion to your space with enough chairs to seat your family or guests comfortably. Choose a chandelier with ambient light that compliments your style. Avoid fixtures that point straight down, since that brings energy to one place rather than the entire space.

In The Living Room

Set up seating for conversation with a welcoming feel, and enough wiggle room for guests. Each seat should have a corresponding surface to place a drink, food, or book. Large furniture pieces like sofas should be against a wall farthest from the entrance. Make sure to leave a few inches for leeway on either side. You can also set up a floating sofa arrangement with a console table, lamps, and a mirror opposite so you can see around the room. Mix things up by using furniture of different shapes or finishes for visual interest and balance. Circular/oval tables allow energy to move more easily, and square/rectangle tables usually maximize space. Again, try to choose materials representing the five Chinese elements of wood, fire, earth, metal, and water.

It’s up to you whether you let the sunlight in or cover your windows for privacy. However, windows opposite front doors should have drapes or blinds to keep the energy inside the house. Public spaces like living rooms are great for televisions, which can be set as a focal point. Decorate with items that you love and items that have meaning. Minimize clutter with a bookshelf or built-in cabinetry for storage.

In The Bedroom

Private spaces like the bedroom should have a balance of masculine and feminine qualities. Keep the bed on the farthest wall with a clear view of the door. Just don’t have feet pointing directly towards the door! You can combat this by placing a high bench at the end of the bed to shift the energy. Try to keep room on each side of the bed for lighting and access. Incorporate a sense of coziness, and symmetry in your design for better relaxation.

Electronic devices in the bedroom can disrupt sleep. Keep active energy neutralized by opting for a battery powered alarm clock instead of electric. Also keep phones and laptops off and away from the bed for at least an hour before going to sleep. Unfortunately stuff stored under the bed sends out energy all night, so clear it all out and keep your room free of clutter. The bedroom should be a peaceful sanctuary, where you begin and end your day.

3 Hallmarks Of A Rustic Kitchen

Sometimes beauty is subtle but strong, found in simple design, natural elements, and a slightly rugged, almost unfinished aesthetic. We see this type of unrefined style in rustic kitchens, and can’t help but admire the overwhelming warmth and hominess that radiates from this theme. In addition to these intangible qualities, rustic kitchens also possess a few telltale hallmarks. Be sure to include these defining kitchen design ideas and elements when creating a rustic kitchen in your own home.

1. Cottage Or Country Kitchen Sink Styles

Rustic kitchens tend to have a cottage or country feel, which is why farmhouse kitchen sink styles or apron front sinks are fitting choices. Their unique design was originally intended for function, in a time where cooking and cleaning consumed a lot of the day  — even babies could be bathed in these oversized sinks! While their large size is still appreciated by those that love to cook or bake, a big part of their popularity is the nostalgic feel they provide a room.

Rustic Wood Beams and Stone Wall Accents in Great RoomYou’ll notice apron front sinks come in a variety of sizes and styles. You’ll also have a few different materials to choose from, white fireclay and porcelain being the traditional choice. Stainless steel and copper are beautiful new options, and nicely complement more modern adaptions of the rustic kitchen.

2. Bringing The Outdoors Inside

You will, without a doubt, find natural elements within any rustic kitchen. The idea of bringing pieces of the outdoors inside is what gives the rustic theme its raw, organic air.

There are a few ways to do this and you may have to play around with various kitchen design ideas to see which works best with your layout. If you have an open concept floor plan, a fireplace in the living room or dining room can bring an earthy component to your rustic kitchen.

A stone statement wall, exposed beams, and wood covered ceiling are a few architectural additions that can really solidify your rustic theme.

3. Rustic Kitchen Cabinets

Roosevelt Mocha Vandyke Glaze – Willow Lane CabinetryYour cabinets offer the perfect way to boost the character in your rustic kitchen, and there are a few key ways to achieve your desired look. If your kitchen design ideas include dark colors, dim lights, and comfy corners, you’d probably prefer a warm brown finish. Our Roosevelt Harvest with Black Accent and Roosevelt Mocha Vandyke Glaze are two options that give you that warm and natural feel of rustic kitchen cabinets.

If your vision is more “summer at the farm” than “winter at the cabin,” and you’re picturing big windows with lots of light, vintage accents and serene whites, we have some options for you as well. You can keep it bright with dazzling white cabinets, such as the luminous Roosevelt White, or go with a more antiqued look, like the Roosevelt White with Chocolate Distress and Walnut Highlights or Society Shaker White with Brushed Chocolate Glaze.

Rustic kitchen cabinets come in all colors, styles and finishes. What they have in common is that they accent the natural elements in the room and add to the casual, welcoming feel. In other words, avoid finishes that are too shiny or too sleek, as they can take away from the rustic theme rather than add to it.

Hardware should also stick to the style. Think brushed bronze and gunmetal, rather than the more polished pulls and knobs.

3 Ways To Turn Your Backyard into a Tranquil Fall Retreat

Now that summer is coming to an end, it’s time to turn your backyard into a sanctuary for beautiful autumn days. Fall brings the perfect weather for spending time outside — it’s neither too hot, nor too cold! Here are some helpful tips from Willow Lane Cabinetry to help you create a tranquil fall retreat in your very own backyard.

The Dream Outdoor Kitchen

Do you long to sit on your back patio or deck and enjoy a bountiful meal and a cool, crisp autumn breeze? Dining al fresco is easier when you have an outdoor kitchen! We’re talking built-in gas grills, mini refrigerators, and kitchen islands with plenty of countertop space all coming together to create a stylish and functional outdoor space. Take it a step further by installing a kitchen sink in your new outdoor kitchen, and housing it all under a pergola or covered patio, and you will be all set for dining and entertaining outdoors this fall. All you need now is some comfortable seating, a large outdoor dining table, and a beautiful autumn day. Not sure how to make it all come together? Check out our kitchen design tool to help build the outdoor dream kitchen you've always desired.

Ornamental Grasses in the Early Morning SunLush Fall Landscaping

Fall is an ideal time for sprucing up your yard, when cool air temperatures are easier on plants and gardeners alike! Create a beautiful fall garden with a varied mix of leaf and flower colors and ornamental grasses like Pink Muhly, Pampas and Zebra Grass. Cool season flowers include Cyclamen, Pansy, Viola, Cineraria, Winter Jasmine, Snapdragon, Candytuft, Calendula, and ornamental kale. Fall is also a great time for planting trees and evergreen shrubs.

According to Better Homes and Gardens, pests and disease are not an issue when you garden in the fall, and as an added bonus, you will not need to fertilize to promote new growth. Since the soil is still warm, roots will grow until the ground freezes. Just add some fresh mulch on top, and enjoy your beautifully landscaped backyard!

Autumn Accessories

Add colorful containers to your patio to help integrate your outdoor living space with the freshly planted garden that surrounds it. Potted plants help add an extra pop of color and seasonal appeal, and can soften the edges of your deck. Urn FountainContainers are also portable, and can be moved indoors over the winter.

An urn fountain can be a lovely addition to any tranquil fall retreat, with soothing sounds and water that catches and reflects the sunlight. Add a personal touch to your outdoor space by visiting arts and craft shows in search of unique metal yard stakes, décor, and wind chimes. Then complete your space with outdoor throw pillows in autumn colors, illuminating string lights or landscape lighting, and a nice set of unbreakable glasses, dishes, and serving trays.

Home Trends: How To Mix Patterns Like A Pro

As a DIY interior designer, the level of difficulty probably plays a huge role in what projects you’re willing to attempt. Most likely you feel comfortable at “beginner” level tasks like choosing a kitchen sink, but are you willing to entertain “intermediate” projects for something you truly love. However “advanced” challenges can be a little intimidating. For these projects you probably use a lifeline, calling in a friend, or even hiring a professional.

Mixing Colors and Patterns in a Master BedroomThere are some trends that most of us just feel more confident in executing, and for some reason mixing patterns isn’t one of them. It might just be the fear of clashing, but for whatever reason the “Pattern on Pattern Trend” scares a lot of us. But with great risk comes great reward, and we promise if you follow these simple rules, you’ll be ready to mix patterns like a pro in no time!

Stick to an odd number of patterns — preferably three!

While even numbers may sound more – well – even, odd numbers visually look more balanced. When mixing patterns, stick to an odd number of designs, ideally three. Three tends to be just enough, and leaves less room for error. Mixing and matching three patterns is much easier than five or seven!

Keep your color theme consistent.

A big key to mixing patterns right is paying attention to color. When you have multiple patterns in one room, you want to keep colors more consistent. Too many patterns and colors together and the room will look busy rather than beautiful. Stick to a range of shades (such as brown neutrals) or select a few colors (grey, yellow and blue) and don’t stray from your color scheme.

Make patterns permanent.

Kitchen Island TrendsWhen incorporating patterns into your home, it’s easy to think you’re limited to décor and accessories. In reality, you can make patterns a permanent part of your home — a move that can actually make your mixing seem more intentional rather than accidental. So how do you create a cohesive look with permanent patterns? The kitchen is a great example of where this can work. One of the major kitchen island trends is choosing elements that are different from your wall cabinetry and countertops. Complimentary finishes, colors, and countertop materials on a kitchen island make mixing and matching easy. Outside of kitchen islands trends, your flooring and backsplash are two other permanent places where patterns can be incorporated.

It’s all about scale.

A rule of thumb for mixing patterns is having one large scale pattern and then two or more smaller patterns. Start with your main (or large scale) pattern first. This will give you a foundation to work with when choosing your secondary patterns. Your main pattern should be a focal point that really grabs the attention in the room. Once the first pattern is established, you can work off the scale and colors of that pattern to finish the space. Your second and third patterns should be half the size of your large-scale pattern, and should complement its colors. Ideally, they should also be different in nature — for example, floral and stripes or chevron and polka dots.

Find inspiration in unusual places.

If you try to cram a lot of patterns into one space and don’t take full advantage of the room, your mixing definitely will end in an eyesore. Think about places patterns don’t typically live. For example, kitchen sink window decorations are usually mundane. A small potted plant, if anything, sits on the window sill. When you’re incorporating patterns into your kitchen, don’t skip over this piece of prime real estate. Kitchen sink window decorations alone can bring many pattern possibilities to your home, such as beautiful drapery designs, additional shelving (for placing those potted plants), a backsplash that borders the window frame, and even an intricate leaded glass window.

Trendy Tropical Decor is Oh So Hot…. Again!

Sunlit pastel shades, pink flamingos, and kitschy palm prints are popping up all over the place! While this style of décor has its roots in the past, today’s trendy tropicals blend a bit of retro nostalgia with sophisticated modern sensibilities, for a look that is oh so hot and anything but dated! From furniture and fabrics to walls and kitchen cabinets, bring the sunshine indoors and let summer last all year long with these trendy tropical design tips!

Tropical Pam FabricFurniture

Take your inspiration from the Art Deco vibe of Miami in the early 20th century, with chrome, mirrors, rattan, and exotic woods. Sleek lines and statement pieces steal the show, adding a bit of retro flair to your space. You can scour flea markets for that one-of-a-kind vintage find, or shop for reproduction pieces online. With the current popularity of this style of decorating, you should have no trouble finding a funky metal lounge chair, or fun sunburst mirror to fill your space.

Fabrics

A pretty tropical palm print is always in fashion! Add a touch of green foliage to your home with throw pillows, curtains, or bedding in a luxuriously leafy print. In the kitchen, try a pop of vibrant color on table linens, and seat cushions. Don’t be afraid of prints! Tropical floral motifs and geometric shapes in soft colors work equally well in this theme.

Walls

Freshen up your space with soft shades of aqua, flamingo pink, coral, cool gray, off-white, and green. If you’re feeling bold, create an accent wall with a boldly botanical wallpaper.

Roosevelt Sage – Willow Lane CabinetryKitchen Cabinets

White, gray or khaki kitchen cabinets will create a blank canvas for decorating with tropical prints and colors. Or choose kitchen cabinets in pastel colors like sage green, or tidewater blue for a unique twist! Kitchen island trends lean toward mixing thing up, so have fun by pairing up different finishes!

Accessories

Flamingos are venturing indoors this year! Once considered the subject matter for backyard ornaments, the flamingo motif is having a big moment in interior decorating. Try a pink flamingo shower curtain in the bathroom, a fun flamingo print on the wall, or a showy beaded flamingo embellishment on a linen throw pillow. Houseplants add a touch of warmth to any living space and are a must for tropical themes. Bromeliads, Anthurium, Bird of Paradise, Philodendron, Peace Lily, Dumb Cane, and Indoor Palms all fit the bill!

Summer doesn’t have to end when your home is a tropical paradise! Now, picture yourself poolside with a mango daiquiri, complete with a paper umbrella, and let’s get decorating!
