How To Create The Luxurious Laundry Room Of Your Dreams

Don’t let another summer pass you by. Now is the perfect time to create the luxurious laundry room of your dreams, complete with all wood cabinetry to house all your washing needs. Here are some design ideas and inspiration for a do it yourself remodel with amazing results.

The Perfect Place

The perfect laundry room should have an energy-efficient and stylish washer and dryer, a sink for hand washing delicates, and large hampers to sort dirty clothing waiting to be washed. There should be a designated spot for hanging clothes to dry, and countertop space for folding clean clothes. The icing on the cake, of course, is all wood cabinetry — the perfect place to hide your iron, detergent, stain removers, and fabric softener behind beautiful closed doors.

Lexington Oatmeal Glaze - Willow Lane CabinetryOnce all these key elements are in place, how you personalize your laundry room is entirely up to you. Here are a few of our favorite ideas:

The Pampered Pet

Imagine a laundry room with plentiful, quality cabinets, and a place to bathe your pet with ease. Let your laundry room do double duty by installing a step-in open shower that is just the right size for your furry friends.

The Marvelous Mudroom

Where you wash your clothes can also be the ideal landing place for all your shoes. A well-placed mudroom bench with cubbies allows you to tuck those unsightly sneakers and flip-flops away and hidden, yet easy to find. Designate a basket for each family member.

The Smart Small Space

Manchester Shaker Black (Semi-Custom) - Willow Lane CabinetryIf your laundry room is on the small side, think big with clever, space saving storage solutions. Quality cabinets let you maximize your space from floor to ceiling. If your laundry lacks a linen cabinet, use baskets on open shelves to hold extra paper towels and laundry odds and ends.

A do it yourself remodel is easier than you may think. Take advantage of Willow Lane Cabinetry’s free design tool this summer, and create the luxurious laundry room you have always wanted. So, what are you waiting for?

A Place For Everything: How To Organize Your Bathroom Vanity In 3 Steps

When purchasing a bathroom vanity, you need to consider the number of people that will use that vanity. This is second in importance only to the size of your bathroom. Ideally you want enough vanity cabinets for each person to have his or her own designated section. Otherwise, vanity cabinets can become crowded, and completely cluttered. Which, to be honest, can happen even if there is more than enough space to accommodate a busy bathroom.

Whether your bathroom vanity is too small, just right, or larger than necessary, these organization suggestions will help you find a place for everything.

Society Shaker Khaki - Willow Lane Cabinetry1. Clear out before you clean up.

Before you begin to organize, there are some things you should banish from your bathroom vanity first. You don’t want your husband’s razor in your makeup drawer, or your kid’s bath toys mixed in with the hairdryer. The only way you’re going to find a place for everything is if you free up some space.

Take an inventory of what is currently in your vanity. Then figure out what doesn’t have to be there. Can you move those cleaning supplies to a hallway closet? Maybe those bath toys could be stored in a bin and kept in the linen cabinet instead.

Before you start organizing, purge what you can. Once you’ve cleared out some space you can really tackle this project.

2. Divide items by person or category.

Depending on how many people use this vanity, you can separate items either by each individual or by categories, such as hair care or dental. More people means organize by person, less people means organize by category.

Find a place for each person or category based on the space you have under the sink, in cabinets, and in drawers. Now figure out how to optimize that space.

3. Invest in some organizers.

Another way to free up some space is to better utilize the space you have. Organizers are a great way to make the most of your vanity cabinets — and be able to easily locate items in the future.

Vero Espresso - Willow Lane CabinetrySome of the most useful organizers for bathroom vanities are:

  • Cabinet door organizers – These hang or attach to the inside wall of the cabinet door to provide vertical storage space for tall items. You’re probably already familiar with kitchen cabinet organizers that work like this. While those are great for spices or rolls of aluminum foil, they also have styles designed to accommodate bathroom items like toiletries and hair dryers.

  • Pull out shelf organizers – There are a variety of pull out organizers that turn your standard cabinet into a multi-shelf storage solution. This allows you to categorize items much more easily, and have a designated place for everything. You will find some kitchen cabinet organizers from Willow Lane Cabinetry that can also work in your vanity, such as the woven basket with rails.

  • Drawer dividers – take control of that makeup drawer with the magic of a drawer organizer or utility tray. You’ll no longer have to rummage through a pile of mascaras and palettes to find your foundation.

  • Sliding trays – you are probably not utilizing the full depth of your under sink cabinets, and we don’t blame you. Who wants to get on their hands and knees and blindly reach for items in the dark corners of their vanity? Sliding trays solve that problem by allowing you to completely utilize every inch of your vanity cabinets and then slide the contents towards you in one motion.

Anything Goes: Why We Love Transitional Kitchens

Coffee and sugar. Milk and cookies. Peanut butter and jelly. Some things are just better together than they are apart, which is why transitional kitchens make so much sense. They shy away from the idea that a kitchen theme must follow one style alone. Traditional and contemporary kitchens were previously two very separate ideas — but no more. The industry said, “It’s okay for classic and modern to live together,” and transitional kitchens were born. Find out why we love this hybrid style, or check out our free kitchen design tool and see for yourself.

Sanibel Shaker Gray - Willow Lane CabinetryTransitional kitchens allow the best of both worlds to live seamlessly together.

Think for a moment about the elements of modern and contemporary kitchens that you really love. Maybe it’s the clean, seamless appearance, or the flat cabinetry. Now, picture your favorite parts of traditional kitchens. You might be envisioning the granite countertops or the natural wood cabinetry. Finally, put these pieces together. See how they don’t clash but rather complement one another and create balance?

By blending the best of new and classic, transitional kitchens throw out the rules of the past and are resilient to change.

For the flexible designer, transitional kitchens let creativity thrive and welcome innovation.

One reason homeowners feel intimidated by interior design is the long list of principles and rules that come with it. We’ve been told that there are guidelines to be followed, and this restrictive idea of what designing a home is like has turned many people off.

But that was then. Transitional kitchens have paved the way for a more flexible way of design. With less restriction, homeowners find excitement in making their space truly their own. New features like our free kitchen design tool have also made it easier than ever for anyone to dip their toe into the pool of design.

Open Concept HomeOpen concept designs no longer feel the burden of concrete themes.

With the rise of open concept design, the weight of maintaining a single theme was even more difficult. More homes were adopting “great rooms” or spaces that combined the kitchen, living room and dining room. Staying 100% traditional or modern throughout these three rooms was unrealistic. This, and other shortcomings in the design process, sparked the need for blended themes.

With transitional kitchens, open concept designs could incorporate both modern and traditional elements throughout a great room with ease. With walls removed and rules erased, homeowners are now turning their houses into homes with the welcoming and attainable transitional style.

On the go, but clearly in the right direction, transitional kitchens capture our attention and bring us home.

Midtown Dark Shaker - Willow Lane CabinetryMeaning to transition, change, or move from one thing to another, transitional kitchens are a concept quite vague but nonetheless adored.

Transitional kitchens are easy to love, and the obvious choice when you want the best of both worlds, flexibility, and a house that completely feels like a home. From fewer rules to more resilience, transitional kitchens have stolen the show and our hearts.

Not Just For Kitchens: How To Use Custom Cabinets in 4 Unexpected Ways

Everyone knows Willow Lane Cabinetry offers quality cabinets at affordable prices for both the kitchen and bath. But let’s step out of these two spaces and explore how you could use semi-custom cabinets in unexpected ways throughout your home.

Roosevelt Canvas Home Office - Willow Lane CabinetryHome Office

Imagine a home office that goes beyond a basic desk and chair. Working from home can be a rewarding experience, especially when your workspace feels as comfortable as the rest of your home. We’re talking about cushy seating, plenty of room to spread out, and wall cabinets with soft close hinges to keep everything organized and tucked behind closed doors. Your home office should not look like a crowded cubicle. Just think of how productive and professional you will be with a beautiful and quiet space to call your own.

Laundry Room

Midtown Dark Shaker Laundry Room - Willow Lane CabinetryWall cabinets are the perfect addition to a laundry room. Laundry takes a lot. Wouldn’t it be nice to hide all those soaps, stain removers, bleach, fabric softeners, and lingerie bags in pretty, semi-custom cabinets? As an added bonus, dryers produce a lot of lint, and closed doors keep all that fuzz from sticking to detergent bottles. Wall cabinets in the laundry room also offer much-needed storage space for items like your iron, paper towels, and even extra toilet paper.

Play Space

If you have young children, having a designated playroom is a welcome addition to the home. With that said, playrooms are notoriously messy. Having room to play is fun! But stepping over and on toys is not fun — especially for parents. Quality cabinets can stand up to what kids dish out, and are the ultimate storage solution for your play space. Stack books and board games neatly inside, and add baskets or bins to hold dolls, action figures, Matchbox cars, and tiny Lego building bricks. A little organization makes it easy for kids to find their toys, and easy to clean up at the end of the day.

Lexington Oatmeal Glaze Craft Area - Willow Lane CabinetryCraft Area

Whether it’s a creative space for kiddos to color, a place to work on a favorite hobby, or a scrapbooking station, having a craft area is a dream come true for some homeowners. Why not get creative and install semi-custom cabinets to house all your crafting supplies? Having a creative outlet is a wonderful thing. With a well-organized, designated crafting space, you will be able to express your creative side in amazing ways!

Willow Lane Cabinetry may be America's largest online semi-custom kitchen and bathroom dealer, but why not think outside the box?  Design a laundry room, home office, play space, or craft area with quality cabinets today!

How To Choose The Right Bathroom Vanity For Your Unique Space

Every bathroom is unique, which makes finding the right bathroom vanity for your individual space a bit of a challenge. Here are some guidelines to follow to help you choose the right bathroom vanity for each bathroom in your home.

Powder Room

Powder rooms tend to be on the small side so the goal is to make the room feel less cramped. Storage is usually not a priority, as you won’t need any toiletries or linens in a powder room. With that said, you will need to house cleaning supplies and extra rolls of paper, so look at single sink bathroom vanities in sleek styles to make the room feel more open. Shaker vanities are a good choice in small bathrooms because of their clean lines and simple look – but you also shouldn’t be afraid to make a statement with your powder room bathroom vanity either. This is the one bathroom in the house you can guarantee guests will see, so go for glam if that’s what you want!

Guest Bath

A guest bath can vary greatly in size and function. Be considerate of the square footage of the bathroom and who will be using it. For example:

  • If your hall bathroom is used by a member of your family, the bathroom will require more storage than if it were solely for visitors.
  • If the bathroom is typically only used by one individual, it might make more sense to choose a single sink bathroom vanity and free up the room for a larger shower or a linen closet.

Another factor that could impact your decision is whether or not your home has hallway linen closets. If there is adequate storage outside of the bathroom that you can store extra towels or cleaning supplies, you may not require a vanity with as many bathroom cabinets or storage capabilities. On the other hand, if your home lacks linen closet space, you should opt for a vanity with spacious linen cabinets above.

Master Bath

The master bath is typically the largest bathroom in the home and traditionally will feature a double sink bathroom vanity. However, do not take tradition as law.

In today’s modern homes, it is not uncommon to find a single sink vanity in a master bath. Aside from the fact that your master bath may only be used by you, you also might not see a large double sink vanity as a priority. Having a bathroom with a shower and a tub may rate higher on your list of priorities.

Master SuiteWhen it comes to the design of the vanity, that will depend on whether your bathroom is part of your bedroom or not. If it’s not, then go with what you like! There’s no reason for the theme of your master bathroom to reflect the master bedroom if they’re not attached.

However, if your bathroom does open up to the master bedroom, you will also want to factor in the style elements of your bedroom when choosing a vanity. You don’t want your bedroom design to clash or conflict with the style of your bathroom furniture. When choosing the layout and bathroom vanity for your master bath, take into consideration the areas of the bathroom that will be seen from the bedroom as well.

These types of bathroom suites may also require larger bathroom cabinetry to make the room feel complete. Depending on the floor plan, you could install a large double sink vanity; two single sink vanities with a prominent divide of shelving, or have two separate bathroom vanities on opposing walls.

3 Tips For A Clean And Sparkling Shower Door

Spring cleaning is still lingering in the air, and it’s time to give your bathroom some extra TLC before your busy summer begins. Hard water stains and soap scum are common concerns — there is a good chance they are on your shower doors and walls, and perhaps on your bathroom cabinets as well. Thankfully, removing gunk and hard water stains is easier than you may think. Here are three thoughtful tips to get your shower doors clean and sparkling, and to keep them that way!

Spray Cleaner on Glass Shower DoorDaily Maintenance

Keep your shower looking brand new by using a squeegee after each use. With the proper preventative maintenance, it will be easier to stop water deposits from building up, which will save you scrubbing time and effort later on. Keep a squeegee hanging in your shower as a daily reminder to wipe it down after you are finished bathing. You can also use a daily shower spray as a handy, quick and inexpensive fix.

Creative Chemical-Free Cleaners

If you wish to avoid chemicals in your bathroom, consider making your own shower cleaner using natural ingredients. Experiment to see what works best. These mixtures can be used on more than just your shower doors. Try them on your mirrors, bathroom cabinets, countertops, knobs and pulls, and sinks.

  1. Water and Vinegar: Mix equal parts water and white vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray the mixture onto your shower door, and wipe it with a sponge. Let it sit for a few minutes on the glass. Keep applying the mixture as it dries, while keeping the door wet for a minimum of five minutes. Rinse the solution off the door with warm water. If the results are not to your liking, add more vinegar to the solution and start from the beginning. You can also add some dish soap for added cleaning power, and 10 to 20 drops of your favorite essential oil to give your cleaner a pleasant scent. Take note that vinegar can damage stone materials.

  1. Water, Baking Soda, and Vinegar: Pour ½ cup of baking soda in a container and add white vinegar to form a frosting-like paste, using a spoon to mix. Wipe the paste on your shower door and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Scrub well, and then rinse thoroughly.

  1. Vinegar, Baking Soda and LemonSparkling Citrus: Cut a lemon in half. Dip one half in baking soda and rub it gently on the glass door. Use the other half to give it second coating of citrus, then rinse and dry. This trick should leave your bathroom looking clean and smelling lemony-fresh the natural way!

Useful Tools

Take advantage of everyday household items to make you cleaning efforts easier, efficient, and cost effective! An old toothbrush is excellent for scrubbing the metal frame, and inside small nooks and crannies between the glass doors. A paint scraper can remove the buildup where the metal meets the shower or door. A flat razor can carefully scrape stubborn mineral spots off of flat glass.

Stop soap scum and stubborn hard water stains in their tracks with these manageable tips and tricks, and enjoy a refreshingly clean and sparkling bathroom.

Curb Appeal: 10 Landscape Mistakes To Avoid This Spring

While winter was all about keeping cozy inside, spring is all about spending time outdoors. If you’re a do it yourself kitchen remodel type, you’re probably a DIY lawn guru as well. That’s great! Just make sure your landscaping is up to par by avoiding these 10 common mistakes that homeowners make.

1. Fertilizing Fails

Fertilizer is great, so if you’re skipping it, you’re doing your lawn a disservice. That being said, too much fertilizer is not great. When purchasing plants or grass, ask which fertilizer is best and how often it should be used.

Gardening Tools2. Keeping Your Gardening Tools Indoors

Out of sight, out of mind. When your gardening tools are buried somewhere in the house, it is less likely that you’ll grab them to do some maintenance here and there. Install some specialty cabinets in your garage for easy access.

3. Putting Your Plants In Areas With Bad Lighting

You take so much time and patience to put your plants into the ground, so make sure you do it right. Take into account the shadows your house produces and any shade created by trees before planting. Some plants require more sunlight than others and you want to make sure they get the right exposure.

4. Over Decorating

Got garden gnomes? It’s easy to get excited about the nice weather and cover your entire yard with decorations and figurines. The problem is that this kind of disorganized decorating usually ends in disaster. It’s important to have a common theme, and a limit to your outdoor décor. In other words, it might be time for a garage sale.

5. Forgetting That Plants Grow

Like babies and puppies, plants won’t stay the same size forever. Make sure you are taking into account their growing potential and how that will effect the other elements of your yard before you plant anything.

Lawn Mower6. Cutting Your Grass Shorter Than You Should

If you cut your grass shorter, you won’t have to mow it as often, right? Wrong. It’s actually better to leave grass a little longer during warmer months to provide the soil extra shade from the sun. Trying to cut your grass too short could also lead to bare patches in your lawn, which are much more annoying to fix than mowing your lawn regularly.

7. Don’t Just Look At Your Yard From The Street View

When we’re landscaping, some of us only think about what the neighbors will see. What about you? When designing your lawn, also take a look at it from the inside. When you’re sitting on the couch, cooking in the kitchen, or working at your desk, won’t you be looking out the windows? Make sure your view is just as pleasing as your neighbors.

8. Pruning Plants In Spring

Don’t start pruning before doing a little research. Different plants have different processes when it comes to pruning, and usually spring is not the best time of year to prune. When in doubt, don’t prune at all. Not pruning your plants is less harmful than doing it wrong.

Pruning a Tree9. Not All Tools Work When It Comes To Landscaping

Are you the kind of person that keeps a hammer in your kitchen drawer? Are you also the kind of person that uses a hammer for everything? Earlier we cautioned about not having specialty cabinets for your gardening tools, and now we’re going to warn you about having the wrong tools in those cabinets. Some jobs require tools that you may not have. Don’t just grab any tool you have lying around. You could damage your lawn, and the cost of fixing that mistake could greatly exceed the cost of renting or buying the right tool.

10. Designing A Pretty Yard That’s Not Comfortable

While the look of your lawn is undeniably important, so is its functionality. When designing your lawn, be sure to think of how you and your family will use it. Create a space that is as welcoming as it is beautiful.

7 Keys To Creating The Ultimate Outdoor Kitchen For Entertaining

With summer around the corner, there’s no better time to create or upgrade an outdoor kitchen area. Outdoor living is just as important as indoor living; it’s a place to relax, entertain, and enjoy! Important elements of every outdoor kitchen include a grill, outdoor bar cabinets and kitchen islands. Bring the inside out with these luxurious ideas to transform your backyard into the ultimate outdoor kitchen and entertainment space.

Dining Al Fresco: Eating outdoors has lots of benefits — think fresh air, sunshine, scenery, and plentiful seating. You can sit in chairs at a table, on bar stools at a kitchen island, or lounge on all-weather patio sofas. Stay prepared for Mother Nature by customizing a pergola or covered porch in your space so that you can dine outside in the rain or shine! If it’s too hot or cold, you can compensate with ceiling fans or heating lamps.

Open-Air Kitchen: Open-air kitchens are a must for outdoor entertaining. If you have a covered porch, why not incorporate outdoor kitchen cabinets? They are a great way to stay organized and ready for meal prep, and can be used as hidden storage areas for extra plates, cups and napkins. Cabinets can be arranged in a variety of ways and styles that portray an open layout. Willow Lane Cabinetry offers many different cabinet styles, including shaker, raised panel, and recessed panel.

Roots Rack Industrial Kitchen Cart - Willow Lane Cabinetry

Warm Weather Entertaining: When the sun is shining, it’s time to go all out with your customized appliances and accessories. Kitchen islands and carts can be extremely useful when entertaining in your backyard. Choose from portable styles that can move about, and enhance the outdoor party experience. These cabinets-to-go can serve as a beverage station, condiment cart, or dessert bar. Top everything off with a large built-in grilling area (or grade-A portable grill) that’s big enough to cook for a crowd. A built-in outdoor kitchen can include refrigerated drawers, a beverage center and cooler.

Strategic Layout: It’s crucial to make the most of your space for successful outdoor entertaining. A major element is to create the right indoor to outdoor flow. This means having wide and direct access from outside to a powder room for guests. It also means having easy access to the indoor kitchen for the party host.

Comforts Of Home: Be sure to make the outside just as charming as the inside of your home. Have plenty of comfortable seating, with outdoor cushions and throw pillows. Create a family-friendly, picnic atmosphere with unbreakable dinnerware and cups. Serving trays are both decorative and functional when hosting a cookout. Food umbrellas will protect edibles from insects. It’s that special attention to detail that will make you the host with the most.

Backyard Tiki TorchesDay To Night: Enjoy your yard no matter what time of day. Adding an outdoor fire pit creates a cozy atmosphere and lavish aesthetic, and can assist in heating up your favorite savory and sweet snacks like shish kabobs or s’mores. Keep the party going by lighting up your area with tiki torches, patio lights, or string lights.

Outdoor Ambiance: All entertainment areas should be equipped with accommodating accessories, and precautions to keep things running smoothly. Choose simple landscaping that’s not too close to your sitting and dining areas. Select potted plants that don’t attract insects while still contributing to the overall appearance of your outdoor entertainment area. Or go a step beyond and choose plants that repel mosquitos and other biting insects naturally. You and your guests will enjoy the wide-open space, and relaxing, bug-free atmosphere.

Want to go out without leaving your home? Spice up your summer by creating the ultimate outdoor kitchen for entertaining, and relaxing with family and friends. An outdoor kitchen lets you easily bring the party outside, and when you customize your space, your backyard will be just as beautiful as the inside of your home.

5 Spring Cleaning Tips For Your New Kitchen

Custom kitchens have everything you could possibly wish for — except that self-cleaning feature! But once you get a new kitchen, you’ll want to keep it looking brand new for as long as possible.

Routine cleaning and care is key to maintaining the luster and shine of your all wood cabinetry, stainless steel appliances, and ceramic or hardwood floors. And since it’s officially springtime, you know what that means — Spring Cleaning starts now. Don’t stress, though! We’re sharing our favorite Spring Cleaning tips to keep your new kitchen sparkling all season long.

Vision Almond - Willow Lane Cabinetry1. Don’t just spot clean cabinets — let them shine!

If you’re like most homeowners, you may have a tendency to spot clean your kitchen cupboards. Drip there? Drop there? Wipe it up. Less often do we wipe them down from top to bottom like they deserve. It’s good to get in the habit of really cleaning your cabinets every once in awhile, so that you can remove any buildup and preserve the finish.

Cleaning your cabinets is actually a fairly easy process with the right product. Murphy’s Oil Soap is a safe, effective cleaner for all wood cabinetry. This classic cleaner not only rids your kitchen cupboards of food residue, but also leaves a really pretty shine that keeps them looking brand new.

2. Disinfect knobs and pulls.

It’s important to wipe down the knobs and pulls on your kitchen cabinets, as they can be a top spot for germs and bacteria. You will find a few great products on the shelves that can help you deep clean your hardware without scratching the surface. Bon Ami Powder Cleanser and Bar Keepers Friend Cleanser and Polish are both popular and easy to use options. If you want a quick DIY solution, you can whip up your own cleanser using dish soap or even vinegar.

Using soap, you just need a drop in a bowl of warm water. Use your hand to mix the soap and water. Then dip your cloth into the soapy water, wring out any excess, and use your cloth to wipe down knobs and pulls. Alternatively, you can mix one-part vinegar with one-part water. If you are having difficulty using a cloth, a toothbrush works great, and is easier to maneuver around nooks and crannies. Once you’re finished, dry your hardware thoroughly with a clean cloth.

3. Use lemons to freshen up and clean.

Lemons are a natural, fragrant way to clean up the kitchen. Two of our favorite uses are in the microwave and the food disposal.

To clean your microwave, you may already be familiar with the steam trick. This just means heating up a cup of water for a few minutes, and letting the steam help loosen any grime off the inside of your microwave. This works even better by squeezing a lemon into the water first, and then dropping it in your microwave-safe cup or container. Put the lemon water into the microwave, heat for three minutes, let sit an additional three minutes, then remove the cup and use a cloth to wipe down the interior of your microwave. Your microwave will be looking good and smelling fresh!

Another way lemons do wonders is by slicing up a few and putting them down your disposal. You can also pour some vinegar down there, which will help clean out your pipes while also ridding the drain of odors.

Vinegar, Baking Soda, and Lemon4. Speaking of vinegar, it’s also great for cleaning out your coffee maker.

Running your coffee maker with vinegar and water is a great way to keep it clean. There are only so many pieces you can clean by hand or run through the dishwasher. Making a “pot of vinegar” will clean the rest.

5. Use baking soda as a natural cleaner for appliances and sinks.

To keep your large appliances looking good, use baking soda to shine them up. Whether it’s a dull or dirty looking sink or an oven with burnt-on food, a paste of baking soda and water can do wonders.

Baking soda is also a brilliant odor neutralizer. Keep some in your refrigerator, on the bottom of your trashcan, or anywhere else it tends to smell less than pleasant.
