Sometimes the best things in life are free. Take colorful fall leaves, for instance, time spent with loved ones, or the scent of a freshly baked pumpkin pie cooling in the kitchen. And while pumpkins aren’t free exactly, they are certainly inexpensive — and quite lovely. Here, we’ve compiled some brilliant ways to use pumpkins in a Thanksgiving centerpiece, to add a touch of nature’s bounty to your holiday table.
Turn a pumpkin into a beautiful fall display with the addition of fresh flowers.
This idea is from Southern Living, and is as simple and clever as can be! All you need is a medium-sized pumpkin, a block of floral foam, a permanent marker, a sharp knife, and a bunch of your favorite fall flowers.
Start by tracing the foam block around the top of your pumpkin, using the marker. Cut along the lines you’ve made, and remove the top. Next, submerge the foam block in a bowl of water for a few minutes. Scoop out some of the insides of the pumpkin to make room for the foam block. Place the soaked foam block in the nook you’ve hollowed out within the pumpkin. Trim the stems of your flowers to the desired length, and begin arranging them in the floral foam, creating a festive display of mums, asters, and purple coneflowers.
Brilliant Twist: Instead of a block of floral foam and fresh flowers, plant a variety of succulents in a small pot, and trace the bottom of the pot on the top of your pumpkin. Cut along the lines and hollow out the pumpkin, then insert the pot right within the space you’ve created. After Thanksgiving, discard the pumpkin, and keep your pretty pot of succulents as a souvenir.
Create a simple centerpiece using found objects in nature.
There is beauty in simplicity, and this centerpiece idea is simply gorgeous. Autumn is a time of harvest, so take inspiration from Mother Nature and gather items from your yard, such as pinecones, acorns, pecans, and/or freshly fallen leaves. Arrange your found items around a medium-sized pumpkin set on that rustic wooden or metal tray (likely hidden in the back of your custom cabinets). Add in a few gourds or smaller pumpkins, and glass jars filled with battery operated tea lights (for safety reasons).
Brilliant Twist: Instead of battery-operated candles, use festive strings of fairy lights (which can be affordably purchased in stores, and online at retailers like Amazon).
Design a terrarium with mini heirloom pumpkins.
It’s easy to fall in love with this brilliant pumpkin centerpiece. You will need a round glass fish bowl around the size of a medium pumpkin, plus craft moss, and autumnal elements like acorns, twigs, pebbles, and small pinecones. You will also need mini heirloom pumpkins in shades of white, aqua, pale peach, rusty orange, or variegated gold and green. Choose colors that compliment your custom cabinets and home décor. Cover the bottom of your fish bowl with the craft moss, and arrange your mini pumpkins and other natural items on top to create a unique centerpiece that is perfect for fall.
