Top Trending Ways To Design A More Productive Home Office In 2020

Working from home can be full of distractions. Have you ever been sitting at your desk, ready to knock out your “To Do” list, and then somehow found yourself in the laundry room folding clothes?

It happens to the best of us. Even with the greatest intentions, maintaining productivity in a home office is not always as simple as it sounds. If you’re ready to make 2020 the year you finally focus on those goals, try incorporating these three design trends into your home office.

  1. Get creative with your location.

Today, we’re seeing home offices that step outside of the traditional mold. Not only are they more inspiring, but they are also more imaginative.

Where does this new vibe originate from? It might be because work is no longer regarded as a boring or necessary task. People are pursuing passion projects and turning them into full time jobs. There is more interest and excitement around the work we do and as a result, home offices have become more inspiring than functional.

When deciding where to set up your desk, homeowners are choosing the room with the great light and high ceilings. The goal is to find a space that invites you and inspires you to do great work.

And when lofty rooms are unavailable, that’s when the imagination kicks in. From corner nooks to closets, innovative offices are popping up in the most unexpected places. Don’t let size deter you from designing an office in your home. No matter how much square footage you have to work with, it’s enough. In fact, our design team loves a challenge and is seasoned in making big dreams come true in small spaces.

  1. Maintain minimalism with custom cabinets that fulfill all of your home office needs.

It doesn’t matter if your home office is large or small. Clutter doesn’t discriminate. Strategic storage choices are crucial if you want to maintain productivity in your home office. You know what they say, “Cluttered desk, cluttered mind.

The minimalist trend is aesthetically pleasing but it can also have a deeper effect. Organization can positively impact your mental health and allow you to feel more calm and focused. Utilize vertical space by installing custom cabinets in your home office. Office cabinetry can be used to organize your books, files and folders, but it is also great for discreetly storing printers, cable boxes, and other office equipment.

Since our all wood cabinetry comes in a wide range of colors and finishes, it is also easy to achieve that clean, monochromatic look that we all lust after right now. Less breaks in your design creates a sleek, modern style while also minimizing distractions in the room.

  1. Pick the perfect paint color for you and your mood.

You’ve probably heard of color symbolism or psychology, and that different colors have different meanings. For example, red is commonly associated with love and feelings of intensity and passion while blue is considered calming and serene.

Knowing the power different colors possess can be extremely helpful when designing your home office. To decide which color will best support your productivity, think of what’s missing in your work life. Do you feel unmotivated and lacking energy? Are you uninspired to create? Or is your work very detail orientated and you have trouble focusing?

Once you address what’s missing, you can fill the gap by painting your home office a color that specifically evokes the emotion you need. Whether it’s energy, motivation, or focus, pick the perfect paint color for you and your mood.

7 Resources To Take Advantage Of When Remodeling Your Home

Remodeling your home is a journey with many decisions along the way. While rewarding, navigating all of the options available to you can be an overwhelming process. The last thing you want is to get to the end of the process and to find yourself wondering, “Did I make the right choice?”

Here are seven resources that will give you the confidence you need to answer, “Yes!” Remodel your home without regret, knowing that you got the best price possible and made decisions that will benefit you for years to come.

1.Online Retailers

When you order your materials from online retailers like Willow Lane Cabinetry, you can save 30-50% over big-box stores. You still get the best kitchen cabinets, flooring and other materials — but pay less by buying direct. Without the middleman or physical brick and mortar location, manufacturers can keep their costs low and pass the savings on to you. Willow Lane Cabinetry also ships their premium cabinets fully assembled for free, so there are no hidden costs. The price you see is what you pay.

2. Samples

It’s definitely a good idea to try before you buy when remodeling your home. Seeing the different color finishes, styles, and materials in the actual room they will be installed is vital. It’s difficult to compare things unless they are actually side by side, so don’t hesitate to order your flooring, countertop, and cabinet door samples first. When ordering flooring, countertop, and cabinet door samples from Willow Lane Cabinetry, you only have to pay shipping. We refund your deposit once the samples have been returned.

3. Room Design

Since we’re not all architects, interior designers, and general contractors, many of us will need to tap into professional help when remodeling a home. While many of these services can be costly, room design doesn’t have to be one of them. Willow Lane Cabinetry offers all of their clients free expert room design. Whether you need help designing a kitchen, bar, home office, TV room, bathroom or laundry room, we can show you how to bring your magazine-quality room to life. From picking the best kitchen cabinets for your home to sending you photorealistic renderings of what they will actually look like in your space, we’ve got you covered every step of the way.

4. Accident Protection Plan

It can seem like everything has a warranty or protection plan these days, which can certainly make you question, “Is it really necessary?” Not always. Sometimes a protection plan is all or nothing, and whether you’ll ever really need it is a gamble. But when you are marking large purchases that you know will get a lot of use (like buying a car or new cabinets), a protection plan often pays off. Take a look at our 5 Year Protection Plan to see what kind of incidents are covered and how it works.

5. Financing

The cost of remodeling your home can really add up, so taking advantage of interest-free financing is often a good way to manage your budget. If you are eligible, financing your purchase allows you to make payments over a set amount of time and can sometimes be a better alternative than high-interest credit cards. If going this route, make sure you understand the terms and penalties associated with financing and what happens if you can’t make your monthly payment.

The Top 5 Trending Interior Design Colors For 2020

Let’s talk about color. Each year, the top paint manufacturers and color experts select a Color of the Year to inspire  us as we move forward into the next 12 months. This year, choosing a single color was no small task. Not only did January 1st start a new year once again, but also a brand new decade filled with possibilities. Whether you are looking for a wall color to compliment your new custom cabinets, or are simply wanting to make a change in home decor, here are the five top trending interior design colors for 2020.

Naval

Sherwin Williams has named Naval SW 6244 as its Color of the Year for 2020. Rich and restful, this dusky shade of navy blue makes a striking foundation for walls when paired with white all wood cabinetry, natural stone countertops,  and gold-toned metal cabinet pulls.

1-7-20 WLC2-Aspen White Shaker and Back to Nature Green

Back To Nature

Behr’s Color of the Year is Back to Nature S340-4, and anchors their list of color trends for 2020. This soothing, balanced green is light and earthy, and is a refreshing choice as we approach the spring season. It is also a neutral, versatile shade that pairs well with white, light and dark all wood cabinetry finishes.

First Light

Benjamin Moore’s pick for Color of the Year is a soft, understated pink hue that is anything but babyish. First Light 2102-70 feels fresh and modern, and is the star of their Color Trends 2020 Palette, alongside subtle shades of pale blue, green, yellow, and gray. First Light compliments dark brown and gray cabinet finishes, and marble tile.

Blue floral living room

Chinese Porcelain

Hand selected by PPG Paints, Chinese Porcelain PPG1160-6 is a moody shade of blue that is both luxurious and serene. Suitable for both traditional and contemporary homes, Chinese Porcelain compliments crisp white custom cabinets and stainless steel accents in the kitchen, such as major appliances, kitchen hoods and sinks.

Classic Blue

The color experts at Pantone are kicking off the new decade with a timeless choice for Color of the Year. Classic Blue  (Pantone 19-4052) is tranquil, elegant, and reminiscent of the evening sky. According to Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director at The Pantone Color Institute, it is “a solid and dependable blue hue we can always rely on.”

6 Home Design Style Trends To Watch In 2020

This New Year’s Eve starts a new decade, and as we forge ahead, it seems design trends are taking inspiration from the past with an up-to-date twist. From the sweetly nostalgic Schoolhouse to the sublimely clean and simple Scandinavian style, here are six home design trends to watch in 2020.

12-23-19 WLC2-Natural Grey Shaker-Art Deco Revival

Schoolhouse

Schoolhouse style incorporates industrial fixtures, and warm wood tones. Decorative items like framed vintage maps, collections of globes on the open shelving of your TV room cabinetry, rustic furniture and kitchen cabinet finishes, metal pendant lights, and antique schoolhouse clocks all add a touch of whimsy and nostalgia to the home.

Southwestern

Once popular in the 1990s, today’s Southwestern style has moved past textured terracotta walls, cow skulls and feathered accents. This new take on an old favorite is all grown up, with an eclectic charm that blends warm, earthy hues, dark kitchen cabinet finishes, and bold, geometric patterns.

Farmhouse

Modern Farmhouse style is cozy and soothing, with soft, neutral colors, and rustic, natural materials. The clean lines of gray or white Shaker cabinetry suit the Modern Farmhouse aesthetic, and are a popular choice in modern kitchen design today. A shiplap wall treatment, natural stone countertop, apron front sink, and classic subway tile backsplash are all key elements of the Modern Farmhouse movement.

Art Deco Revival

If The Great Gatsby is your favorite novel, you will surely love this Art Deco Revival trend. Classic architectural details blend seamlessly with glamorous gold-tone metal, luxurious fabrics, and rich colors like Classic Blue, Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2020. High-contrast finishes, marble flooring, and bold, geometric patterns complete the look.

English Cottage

Charming, comfortable and classy, the new iteration of English Cottage style features vibrant colors for a modern twist. Glazed kitchen cabinet finishes, cup pulls, airy open shelving or glass front doors, and a large kitchen island are a must, along with cozy upholstered furniture, floral fabrics, and antique furniture finds.

12-23-19 WLC3-Scandinavian StyleScandinavian

Clean lines and cozy elements epitomize Scandinavian style. Light wood tones, faux fur, organic materials like warm wool or soft cotton, plush knit blankets, and a neutral, monochromatic color palette are all hallmarks of this minimalistic yet popular design style.

Now that you’ve learned a little about these different home trends to watch in 2020, which one would you incorporate into your home and modern kitchen design?

5 Wonderful Ways To Fill Your Home With Gratitude

Whether your home has beautiful new kitchen cabinets or you are still adding to your “Dream Kitchens” Pinterest board, you probably have a lot to be thankful for. Here are five wonderful ways to fill your home with gratitude this holiday season and beyond.

Host a party.

‘Tis the season for entertaining, and there is no nicer way to show gratitude for your friends and neighbors than by inviting them into your home. From taking the time to make a delicious, home-cooked meal, to hosting a holiday open house or cocktail party, your guests will surely feel your warm welcome, and in turn, will be grateful for you as well.

Add family photos.

Whether it’s a collection of framed photos on the open shelves of your TV room cabinetry or a gallery wall in your home’s entryway, a home should have pictures of the people (and pets) you love most. Family photos add a personal touch to your space like nothing else can. They tell your story and keep cherished memories close to your heart.

Fill your home with a favorite fragrance.

Scents can instantly lift your spirits and make you nostalgic for treasured moments in your life. From your grandmother’s freshly baked apple pie and your mother’s favorite flowers, to the fresh Christmas tree in your childhood home, you can recapture those aromas with scented candles, reed diffusers, or the real thing.

11-22-19 WLC3-Union GrayKeep your home clean and well-organized.

According to Psychology Today, clutter can negatively affect your mood and your well-being. With that said, a clean home is a happier home, so take the time to stay on top of the mess. Consider adding space-saving accessories to your new kitchen cabinets for better organization, and install custom cabinetry for storage that cuts down on the clutter.

Write it down or share what you are thankful for.

Consider keeping a journal on your bedside table to write down what you are grateful for at the end of the day. It could be something big, like the roof over your head, or something small, like having lunch with your best friend or hearing a kind word from a stranger. If you have children, go around the dinner table and take turns sharing what you are thankful for as a family. There is no better way to fill your home with gratitude.

Glass-Front Kitchen Cabinet Doors – Pros, Cons and Are They Right for You?

Glass-front kitchen cabinet doors are appealing to homeowners on many levels as they can make it easier to find things, elevate what’s inside to home décor status, make a smaller room look larger… you get the idea.

And wouldn’t you know it—there are a few different types of glass cabinet doors to choose from, offering a number of ways to utilize them in your space. Let’s take a look at the different types of glass cabinet doors, their pros and cons, and when they may be the perfect fit for your home.

Types of Glass-Front Kitchen Cabinet Doors

Glass-front kitchen cabinet doors just happen to come in many styles. A few of the most popular include:

  • Clear, Full-View Glass Cabinet Doors:

Balancing function with looks, clear cabinet doors mean one thing – goods on display. This, in itself, can be a great thing; however, it can also be limiting, depending on needs and style.

  • Fluted/Reeded Glass Cabinet Doors:

Slightly blurred, the contents behind fluted-glass doors will be somewhat obscure, yet still seen.

  • Frosted Glass Cabinet Doors:

While glass, these cabinet doors are more opaque and cloudy, almost completely blocking the view of what’s inside the cabinets.

  • Seeded Glass-Front Cabinet Doors:

Different size “bubbles” give a wavy appearance and look like vintage, hand-blown glass.

  • Leaded-Glass Cabinet Doors:

Used to achieve a dramatic look, leaded-glass is much more decorative and often comes as a theme or specific style. These are popular in built-ins and hutches.

Pros and Cons of Glass-Front Kitchen Cabinet Doors

Adding elements of elegance and luxury to any space, glass-front kitchen cabinet doors have really become a popular trend with many homeowners. There are both pros and cons to this style of cabinet door, and depending on your lifestyle, you’ll either love them or decide to go a different direction. Let’s delve.

Pros of Glass Kitchen Cabinet Doors:

  • Give the illusion of more space, allowing for an open and airy feel (similar to the appeal of open shelves) while still providing a protective door
  • A showcase for statement pieces
  • Busy chefs will always know where to find everything (unless doors are frosted glass)
  • They’re gorgeous, modern and knock-it-out-of-the-park chic

Cons of Glass Kitchen Cabinet Doors:

  • Get out the window cleaner – these cabinet doors need to be cleaned often
  • Possible viewable clutter – depending on space and contents
  • Susceptible to cracks and breakage (not always kid-friendly)
  • If dishes don’t match and styles run the gamut, they may not be a fit

Are Glass-Front Kitchen Cabinet Doors for You?

Glass-front kitchen cabinets make a statement and bring a stunning balance to a room full of wood, tile and metal. So, unless you have mix and match dishware, you’re prone to slamming doors and tap, tap, tapping on glass, we say go for it!

Things to consider in your decision:

Only choose glass-front doors for upper cabinets; if your kitchen needs a little more light, but you’re not sure how to do this, installing lights inside your cabinets and adding glass-front doors can do the trick.

If you’re still indecisive, a fun, trendy idea is to blend – have a mix of glass-front cabinet doors and traditional cabinet doors in your kitchen. This way, you can hide away those items you don’t want to be seen—but still have them within easy reach—and showcase your statement pieces.

5 Details Buyers Look For When Purchasing A Home

When it comes to what buyers want when purchasing a new home, there are a few details that stand out the most. Whether you are the owner of an investment property or thinking of selling your home soon, here are five features that will help you sell your home faster.

1. High-End Kitchen

Buyers are quickly mesmerized when they walk into a home and find new all wood cabinetry and an updated high-end kitchen.

If your home is lacking kitchen appeal, consider making some cosmetic updates that will be more attractive to buyers. When a buyer feels like they are walking into a time machine, it is usually a turn off. Modern all wood cabinetry, solid surface countertops, and a fresh color palette can make a huge difference.

In addition to new cabinets, minor changes like painting walls, installing a kitchen backsplash, or replacing light fixtures and hardware can also improve the look and feel of your kitchen. There’s no need to embark on a complete demolition to make your kitchen feel like a high-end kitchen.

2. New Appliances

New appliances are another detail that today’s buyers want most. Old appliances date the home while new appliances will instantly make your property feel more modern. When homebuyers see shiny new appliances, they get a little sparkle in their eye as well.

Homebuyers also like to see that your home is energy efficient, because this will translate into lower utility bills. If you are going to replace your appliances before selling your property, opt for energy efficient models.

7-12-19 WLC2-Union White Laundry Room

3. Separate Laundry Room

An organized place to sort, clean and fold clothes may seem insignificant compared to other details in the home — but it is actually one of the most wanted features for buyers. This is good news to homeowners, because updating a laundry room is a relatively small-scale project in terms of cost. Be sure to include cabinets for storing laundry essentials and a place to hang dry clothing.

If your home doesn’t already boast a separate laundry room, a basement or garage is a good place to set one up. First, these spaces are probably relatively empty. And second, you likely already have utility lines there. These logical perks can help make the project easy and inexpensive. Converting a hallway closet into a laundry room is another common way to achieve a private laundry room when you have limited space.

4. Well-Maintained Backyard

Does your home have a backyard with a deck or patio? This is a major selling point for potential homebuyers. Especially if the area is maintained and well landscaped. Before showing your property, make sure your yard is on par, whether that’s simply adding some new sod or a few flowers and plants.

Potential buyers will envision what life would be like with a backyard of their own to enjoy. They might dream up an outdoor kitchen for entertaining or a place for their kids to play. Either way, a little investment in your landscaping could help your home sell faster.

7-12-19 WLC3-Barnwood Gray Wood-Look Tile Flooring

5. Wood-Look Floors

Most people prefer hardwood floors to carpeting, so having this feature in your home is definitely a plus. However, genuine hardwood floors can be expensive. Smart homeowners turn to wood-look tile or luxury vinyl to achieve the same look for less. In fact, many buyers prefer these options to genuine hardwood floors because they are more resistant to water, scratches, and stains.

How To Hand Wash And Hang Dry Your Summer Laundry

There is nothing like the fresh-air scent of clean laundry clipped to a clothesline on a hot summer day. If this thought makes you nostalgic for the sunny days of your childhood, when your family hand-washed bathing suits, linen shirts, and cotton dresses in a stainless farmhouse sink, you’re not alone! Get back to those classic summer days with these contemporary tips for hand washing and hang drying summer laundry.

Start by sorting your laundry.

In addition to hampers for your machine washables, keep baskets next to your laundry room cabinetry for the items you want to wash by hand. You’ll need at least two baskets to sort your laundry by color. Don’t mix dark and lights colors, unless you want that red bikini to bleed all over your favorite white sundress or t-shirt. Be mindful of care instructions on garment labels and color fastness before you begin. Check and empty all pockets, pretreat any stains, and check this handy pre-laundry checklist from Better Homes and Gardens.

Stock your laundry room cabinetry with summer essentials.

While washing your laundry by hand takes a little more time and effort, it’s well worth it to keep fabrics looking like new. When hand-washing delicate summer items like bathing suits, you should keep gentle detergents on hand in your laundry room cabinetry. Many brands are offering plant-based detergents in summery scents, like Tide Pureclean in Honey Lavender or Seventh Generation laundry detergent in Fresh Citrus. You can also opt for unscented soap and let Mother Nature sweetly scent your clothing, or make your own laundry detergent with this recipe from DIYNatural.

Follow the steps to hand wash and hang dry your summer laundry.

Fill a tub or stainless farmhouse sink with cool water and about a teaspoon of mild detergent. Once good and sudsy, submerge and soak your garments. With your hands, lightly swish the garments using an up and down and side to side motion. Once you are satisfied that the garments are clean, drain the water and rinse thoroughly until all the soap is gone, or repeat by soaking the garments again in clean water. Do not wring out delicate, “hand wash only” items. Instead, roll in a clean, dry towel to remove excess water. Lay flat to dry, or hang outside in the sunshine, and enjoy that fresh-air scent!

What To Look For When Purchasing Quality Cabinets

Style, quality, and value are three important words that come to mind when shopping for all wood cabinetry. But how do you know if you’re really getting stylish, quality cabinets at a good value? Here are a few key details to look for.

Home And Kitchen Cabinet Finishes

When building or remodeling a home, the cabinetry you choose needs to have a durable finish to stand up to daily use in spaces like the bath, laundry room, TV room, or home office. With that said, no room sees more action than the kitchen. It’s truly the heart of any home. That is why strong, factory kitchen cabinet finishes are especially important. Willow Lane Cabinetry offers painted, glazed and stained cabinets for nearly every room in the home, including the kitchen. Some even come with a catalytic conversion topcoat and UV protection!

Full Overlay Cabinet Doors

When shopping for all wood cabinetry, look for full overlay cabinet doors with premium construction. Solid hardwood face and doorframes with all plywood box, I-beam construction should encompass every cabinet. Dovetailed drawer boxes should come standard with undermount, soft close, full extension glides. At Willow lane Cabinetry, there are no assembly lines. We don’t believe in mass production. Our custom cabinets are built to order every time, and arrive fully assembled, with the standard features and fine details that add value to your home.

Expert Room Design Services

When purchasing quality cabinets, you want to be sure that the style you choose will look good in your home. Willow Lane Cabinetry has a vast selection of cabinet styles and finishes, and nearly all the accessories you need to make your dream room a reality. Best of all, we offer free online kitchen and room design services with a custom layout, a photorealistic rendering, and an itemized list of what you will need and what it will cost. The secret to that magazine-quality look is just a few clicks away, and at no extra cost to you. How is that for value?

When purchasing quality cabinets for your new home or remodeling project, remember these words: style, quality, and value. Then look no further! Give Willow Lane Cabinetry a call today or contact us via email, and get started on designing the home of your dreams.

Potted Plants: The Greenery You Need Above Your Cabinets

Many kitchens have that awkward space above the cabinets that, let’s face it, many of us just aren’t sure what to do with. Do we leave it alone, go crazy with knick-knacks or use it as storage for things we almost never use? One avenue to consider is filling your above-cabinet space with potted plants. This is a fresh and creative way to add a little color and life to your space. Take a look at a few of our favorite ideas.

For Minimal Space

If the space between your cabinets and the ceiling is short, low-light plants are a great option. Tucked just above the cabinets, these plants add a natural and vibrant accent to any space. If you want to add a little more color, think colored pots! Remember to take measurements before you purchase your plants. Another thing to think about when choosing houseplants for your space: consider their future growth. Plants that grow on a vine are an excellent choice for a short space.

Plants for the Non-Green Thumb

You know the type – every year, you try to keep a plant or two alive, and every year, you succumb to the guilt that you killed another one. We’re here to tell you about great (and foolproof) plants for that space above your cabinet – that anyone can keep alive. And they look good, too! Give these a go: Aloe Vera; Aluminum Plant; Chinese Evergreens; White Jasmine; English Ivy; Cast Iron Plant; Spider Plant, and African Spear.

Plants that Clean the Air

If you’d love to detox and purify the air a little, there are countless plants to get the job done. Since we’re thinking above-the-cabinet potted plants, we’re sharing our favorite plants that are low-light, easy-care and beneficial to the air quality of your home: Areca Palm; Philodendron; Dracaena (unless you have pets – these are poisonous to dogs and cats); Weeping Fig; Peace Lily; Rubber Plant; Bamboo Palm, and Snake Plant, to name a few.

Read our other post about air purifying houseplants.

Mix and Match… or Not

One of the best things about potted plants – the pots! They can add color, shape and texture to your space. Don’t worry about matching the pots – pots in a variety of sizes, shapes, colors and textures add interest to your plant display. By livening up your potted plants, you can create a fun and fresh effect in the room.

One Last Thought: We recommend placing waterproof trays under your potted plants to reduce the risk of moisture damage and mold to your cabinets.
