Start the spring season with a fresh new take on cleaning. It’s easy to make your kitchen and bathrooms shine with organic and eco-friendly essential oils. Essential oils are derived from plants, and are vital to the aromatherapy trend that is so popular today. But did you know some essential oils also have antibacterial and antifungal properties? You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the benefits of these seven DIY, oil-infused cleaning solutions — especially the removal of toxic fumes and potentially harmful chemicals from your daily routine. Spring Cleaning has never smelled so sweet.
Dryer Sheets
Make your own reusable dryer sheets out of baby washcloths for chemical-free softness! Simply place a few baby washcloths in a large Mason glass jar. Create a mixture of one cup of white vinegar, 10 drops of grapefruit oil, and 15 drops of rose oil. Lightly pour the mixture into the jar, and allow the liquid to absorb into the washcloths. Store the leftover mixture in a separate container to use for later. Place a damp washcloth in the dryer as needed.
Disinfecting Spray
This multi-purpose concoction is safe and perfect for everyday use. Blend one cup of vodka or rubbing alcohol, one cup of distilled water, 20 drops of eucalyptus oil, 20 drops of rosemary oil, 20 drops of lavender oil, and 30 drops of wild orange oil. Shake together in a spray bottle while cleaning, and use as needed. This cleaner is great for disinfecting the bathroom, including countertops on bathroom vanities.
Hand Sanitizer
Your hands can get dirty easily, and it’s important to clean them, especially before and after cooking, eating, and using the restroom. This cleaner is easy to make, and great to store at home or on the go. Mix three ounces of distilled water, two teaspoons of coconut oil, ½ teaspoon of sea salt, 20 drops of Thieves oil, and 30 drops of tea tree oil. It’s perfect for moisturizing your hands too!
Garbage Disposal Bombs
Blend ½ cup of sea salt with ¾ cup of baking soda, and then slowly mix in one tablespoon of natural dish soap, five drops of lemon oil, and 5 drops of peppermint oil. Pack together in an ice cube tray, and pop out onto parchment paper to let dry for 24 hours. Drop one or two down the drain of your kitchen sink, and run the garbage disposal with water for a refreshingly clean scent.
Carpet Deodorizer
This carpet deodorizer is quick to make and works fast — the area rugs in your kitchen or bath will never smell better. Mix one cup of baking soda, 5 drops of citrus oil, and 10 drops of peppermint oil together and store in a container with a pop up lid. Simply sprinkle the concoction on your carpet, and then vacuum away smelly stains.
Sink Scrubber
Get serious with your kitchen and bathroom sinks. Mix ¼ cup of washing soda, ¼ cup of baking soda, and eight drops of rosemary, eucalyptus, or tea tree essential oil. Combine the ingredients into a container and shake well. Place a small amount in the sink and scrub with a sponge. For an extra clean and stain-free sink, let this formula sit for a few minutes, then scrub and rinse with ¾ of a cup of vinegar and hot water.
Glass Cleaner
Blend three cups of distilled water with ¼ cup of rubbing alcohol or vodka, ¼ cup of white vinegar, and 20 drops of peppermint or spearmint essential oil. Combine all the ingredients together in a spray bottle, shake, and spray on windows, mirrors, or stainless steel. Wipe away with paper towels for a clean and streak-free shine.
It’s time to do away with those noxious cleaners stored in your bathroom vanity, and purge the chemicals in the kitchen cabinets below your sink. Then welcome spring with a naturally clean home, thanks to essential oils!
