3 Hallmarks Of A Rustic Kitchen

Sometimes beauty is subtle but strong, found in simple design, natural elements, and a slightly rugged, almost unfinished aesthetic. We see this type of unrefined style in rustic kitchens, and can’t help but admire the overwhelming warmth and hominess that radiates from this theme. In addition to these intangible qualities, rustic kitchens also possess a few telltale hallmarks. Be sure to include these defining kitchen design ideas and elements when creating a rustic kitchen in your own home.

1. Cottage Or Country Kitchen Sink Styles

Rustic kitchens tend to have a cottage or country feel, which is why farmhouse kitchen sink styles or apron front sinks are fitting choices. Their unique design was originally intended for function, in a time where cooking and cleaning consumed a lot of the day  — even babies could be bathed in these oversized sinks! While their large size is still appreciated by those that love to cook or bake, a big part of their popularity is the nostalgic feel they provide a room.

Rustic Wood Beams and Stone Wall Accents in Great RoomYou’ll notice apron front sinks come in a variety of sizes and styles. You’ll also have a few different materials to choose from, white fireclay and porcelain being the traditional choice. Stainless steel and copper are beautiful new options, and nicely complement more modern adaptions of the rustic kitchen.

2. Bringing The Outdoors Inside

You will, without a doubt, find natural elements within any rustic kitchen. The idea of bringing pieces of the outdoors inside is what gives the rustic theme its raw, organic air.

There are a few ways to do this and you may have to play around with various kitchen design ideas to see which works best with your layout. If you have an open concept floor plan, a fireplace in the living room or dining room can bring an earthy component to your rustic kitchen.

A stone statement wall, exposed beams, and wood covered ceiling are a few architectural additions that can really solidify your rustic theme.

3. Rustic Kitchen Cabinets

Roosevelt Mocha Vandyke Glaze – Willow Lane CabinetryYour cabinets offer the perfect way to boost the character in your rustic kitchen, and there are a few key ways to achieve your desired look. If your kitchen design ideas include dark colors, dim lights, and comfy corners, you’d probably prefer a warm brown finish. Our Roosevelt Harvest with Black Accent and Roosevelt Mocha Vandyke Glaze are two options that give you that warm and natural feel of rustic kitchen cabinets.

If your vision is more “summer at the farm” than “winter at the cabin,” and you’re picturing big windows with lots of light, vintage accents and serene whites, we have some options for you as well. You can keep it bright with dazzling white cabinets, such as the luminous Roosevelt White, or go with a more antiqued look, like the Roosevelt White with Chocolate Distress and Walnut Highlights or Society Shaker White with Brushed Chocolate Glaze.

Rustic kitchen cabinets come in all colors, styles and finishes. What they have in common is that they accent the natural elements in the room and add to the casual, welcoming feel. In other words, avoid finishes that are too shiny or too sleek, as they can take away from the rustic theme rather than add to it.

Hardware should also stick to the style. Think brushed bronze and gunmetal, rather than the more polished pulls and knobs.

3 Ways To Turn Your Backyard into a Tranquil Fall Retreat

Now that summer is coming to an end, it’s time to turn your backyard into a sanctuary for beautiful autumn days. Fall brings the perfect weather for spending time outside — it’s neither too hot, nor too cold! Here are some helpful tips from Willow Lane Cabinetry to help you create a tranquil fall retreat in your very own backyard.

The Dream Outdoor Kitchen

Do you long to sit on your back patio or deck and enjoy a bountiful meal and a cool, crisp autumn breeze? Dining al fresco is easier when you have an outdoor kitchen! We’re talking built-in gas grills, mini refrigerators, and kitchen islands with plenty of countertop space all coming together to create a stylish and functional outdoor space. Take it a step further by installing a kitchen sink in your new outdoor kitchen, and housing it all under a pergola or covered patio, and you will be all set for dining and entertaining outdoors this fall. All you need now is some comfortable seating, a large outdoor dining table, and a beautiful autumn day. Not sure how to make it all come together? Check out our kitchen design tool to help build the outdoor dream kitchen you've always desired.

Ornamental Grasses in the Early Morning SunLush Fall Landscaping

Fall is an ideal time for sprucing up your yard, when cool air temperatures are easier on plants and gardeners alike! Create a beautiful fall garden with a varied mix of leaf and flower colors and ornamental grasses like Pink Muhly, Pampas and Zebra Grass. Cool season flowers include Cyclamen, Pansy, Viola, Cineraria, Winter Jasmine, Snapdragon, Candytuft, Calendula, and ornamental kale. Fall is also a great time for planting trees and evergreen shrubs.

According to Better Homes and Gardens, pests and disease are not an issue when you garden in the fall, and as an added bonus, you will not need to fertilize to promote new growth. Since the soil is still warm, roots will grow until the ground freezes. Just add some fresh mulch on top, and enjoy your beautifully landscaped backyard!

Autumn Accessories

Add colorful containers to your patio to help integrate your outdoor living space with the freshly planted garden that surrounds it. Potted plants help add an extra pop of color and seasonal appeal, and can soften the edges of your deck. Urn FountainContainers are also portable, and can be moved indoors over the winter.

An urn fountain can be a lovely addition to any tranquil fall retreat, with soothing sounds and water that catches and reflects the sunlight. Add a personal touch to your outdoor space by visiting arts and craft shows in search of unique metal yard stakes, décor, and wind chimes. Then complete your space with outdoor throw pillows in autumn colors, illuminating string lights or landscape lighting, and a nice set of unbreakable glasses, dishes, and serving trays.

Home Trends: How To Mix Patterns Like A Pro

As a DIY interior designer, the level of difficulty probably plays a huge role in what projects you’re willing to attempt. Most likely you feel comfortable at “beginner” level tasks like choosing a kitchen sink, but are you willing to entertain “intermediate” projects for something you truly love. However “advanced” challenges can be a little intimidating. For these projects you probably use a lifeline, calling in a friend, or even hiring a professional.

Mixing Colors and Patterns in a Master BedroomThere are some trends that most of us just feel more confident in executing, and for some reason mixing patterns isn’t one of them. It might just be the fear of clashing, but for whatever reason the “Pattern on Pattern Trend” scares a lot of us. But with great risk comes great reward, and we promise if you follow these simple rules, you’ll be ready to mix patterns like a pro in no time!

Stick to an odd number of patterns — preferably three!

While even numbers may sound more – well – even, odd numbers visually look more balanced. When mixing patterns, stick to an odd number of designs, ideally three. Three tends to be just enough, and leaves less room for error. Mixing and matching three patterns is much easier than five or seven!

Keep your color theme consistent.

A big key to mixing patterns right is paying attention to color. When you have multiple patterns in one room, you want to keep colors more consistent. Too many patterns and colors together and the room will look busy rather than beautiful. Stick to a range of shades (such as brown neutrals) or select a few colors (grey, yellow and blue) and don’t stray from your color scheme.

Make patterns permanent.

Kitchen Island TrendsWhen incorporating patterns into your home, it’s easy to think you’re limited to décor and accessories. In reality, you can make patterns a permanent part of your home — a move that can actually make your mixing seem more intentional rather than accidental. So how do you create a cohesive look with permanent patterns? The kitchen is a great example of where this can work. One of the major kitchen island trends is choosing elements that are different from your wall cabinetry and countertops. Complimentary finishes, colors, and countertop materials on a kitchen island make mixing and matching easy. Outside of kitchen islands trends, your flooring and backsplash are two other permanent places where patterns can be incorporated.

It’s all about scale.

A rule of thumb for mixing patterns is having one large scale pattern and then two or more smaller patterns. Start with your main (or large scale) pattern first. This will give you a foundation to work with when choosing your secondary patterns. Your main pattern should be a focal point that really grabs the attention in the room. Once the first pattern is established, you can work off the scale and colors of that pattern to finish the space. Your second and third patterns should be half the size of your large-scale pattern, and should complement its colors. Ideally, they should also be different in nature — for example, floral and stripes or chevron and polka dots.

Find inspiration in unusual places.

If you try to cram a lot of patterns into one space and don’t take full advantage of the room, your mixing definitely will end in an eyesore. Think about places patterns don’t typically live. For example, kitchen sink window decorations are usually mundane. A small potted plant, if anything, sits on the window sill. When you’re incorporating patterns into your kitchen, don’t skip over this piece of prime real estate. Kitchen sink window decorations alone can bring many pattern possibilities to your home, such as beautiful drapery designs, additional shelving (for placing those potted plants), a backsplash that borders the window frame, and even an intricate leaded glass window.

Trendy Tropical Decor is Oh So Hot…. Again!

Sunlit pastel shades, pink flamingos, and kitschy palm prints are popping up all over the place! While this style of décor has its roots in the past, today’s trendy tropicals blend a bit of retro nostalgia with sophisticated modern sensibilities, for a look that is oh so hot and anything but dated! From furniture and fabrics to walls and kitchen cabinets, bring the sunshine indoors and let summer last all year long with these trendy tropical design tips!

Tropical Pam FabricFurniture

Take your inspiration from the Art Deco vibe of Miami in the early 20th century, with chrome, mirrors, rattan, and exotic woods. Sleek lines and statement pieces steal the show, adding a bit of retro flair to your space. You can scour flea markets for that one-of-a-kind vintage find, or shop for reproduction pieces online. With the current popularity of this style of decorating, you should have no trouble finding a funky metal lounge chair, or fun sunburst mirror to fill your space.

Fabrics

A pretty tropical palm print is always in fashion! Add a touch of green foliage to your home with throw pillows, curtains, or bedding in a luxuriously leafy print. In the kitchen, try a pop of vibrant color on table linens, and seat cushions. Don’t be afraid of prints! Tropical floral motifs and geometric shapes in soft colors work equally well in this theme.

Walls

Freshen up your space with soft shades of aqua, flamingo pink, coral, cool gray, off-white, and green. If you’re feeling bold, create an accent wall with a boldly botanical wallpaper.

Roosevelt Sage – Willow Lane CabinetryKitchen Cabinets

White, gray or khaki kitchen cabinets will create a blank canvas for decorating with tropical prints and colors. Or choose kitchen cabinets in pastel colors like sage green, or tidewater blue for a unique twist! Kitchen island trends lean toward mixing thing up, so have fun by pairing up different finishes!

Accessories

Flamingos are venturing indoors this year! Once considered the subject matter for backyard ornaments, the flamingo motif is having a big moment in interior decorating. Try a pink flamingo shower curtain in the bathroom, a fun flamingo print on the wall, or a showy beaded flamingo embellishment on a linen throw pillow. Houseplants add a touch of warmth to any living space and are a must for tropical themes. Bromeliads, Anthurium, Bird of Paradise, Philodendron, Peace Lily, Dumb Cane, and Indoor Palms all fit the bill!

Summer doesn’t have to end when your home is a tropical paradise! Now, picture yourself poolside with a mango daiquiri, complete with a paper umbrella, and let’s get decorating!

4 Hallmarks Of A Traditional Kitchen

Certain characteristics differentiate one kitchen style from another. By embracing these elements, homeowners are able to execute their design easier — and often by themselves. DIY kitchen remodeling is becoming more possible thanks to the ample information, tutorials, and guides available online. So what would a professional designer include to make a traditional kitchen take form? Traits of a traditional kitchen include a combination of the layout, materials, and décor. Use our free kitchen design tool, and these traditional kitchen design ideas to create your very own dream kitchen!

Traditional Subway Tile 1. Backsplash Tile

The first element that comes to mind when thinking of a traditional kitchen is classic subway backsplash tile. This style really needs no introduction, as it possesses a familiarity that spans generations. For most of us, a picture alone brings about feelings of nostalgia, as we remember growing up in a kitchen that had that classic subway pattern. There are a few ways to incorporate a backsplash into your kitchen depending on the look you like best. You can install your pattern everywhere your countertops run, or single out a section such as above your oven or kitchen sink.

2. Structural Embellishments

Traditional kitchens don’t rely on decorations to define their beauty. Their adornments are rooted much deeper — in the walls, ceilings, doorways and floors. Use your foundation as an opportunity to solidify your kitchen’s style and bring your design to life from day one. Moldings on the walls, arches in the doorways, and ceiling beams are a few of the ways to engrave your kitchen’s style in its architecture.

3. Raised Panel Cabinet Doors

Roosevelt White with Chocolate Distress and Walnut Highlights – Willow Lane CabinetryYour kitchen cabinets are another great place to add some more permanent embellishments. While modern kitchens tend to go towards sleek, flat cabinet doors, it’s all about lovely details in a traditional kitchen. Achieve that special touch with raised panel cabinets that add dimension, shadow and intricate beauty to every door.

4. Small Details

While traditional kitchens should certainly deliver a feeling of cohesiveness, it is the small details individually that make this theme so special. Find unique ways to add visual interest to the room. That could be in the form of a kitchen island, a gorgeous copper sink, or by mixing multiple cabinet styles and finishes with our kitchen design tool. It is these unexpected elements and personal little touches that will give your room the depth and history needed to achieve this time-honored theme.

Here we’ve listed some of the hallmarks of a traditional kitchen. When designing your own space, just remember that while traditional kitchens are ornamental and filled with adornment, they should never feel overwhelming. Aim to create balance by layering different elements, and not trying to push them all front and center.

Decorating with Shades of Blue in Your Kitchen

Along with Rose Quartz, Pantone has named Serenity, a watery gray blue, one of the Colors of 2016. You’ll see various shades of blue in bedrooms featured in home magazines, in spa-like bathrooms on TV decorating shows, and in kitchen design ideas online. It’s true — the color blue is having a moment. But don’t let its trendy status worry you. Blue is one of those timeless hues that never goes out of style. From pale shades of aqua to deep, rich navy, the possibilities on the blue color palette are virtually endless. In fact, blue is found in traditional homes, contemporary abodes, and every style of décor in between.

Why is blue so appealing?

We believe it’s time to finally rethink the meaning of a Blue Mood. Blue can be cool or warm depending on the tone, but almost always has a peaceful, calming effect when used in the home. Indeed, it’s anything but sad. Blue is said to bring down blood pressure and slow respiration and heart rate. That is why it is considered so soothing and serene. And like the sea and the sky, blue can bring a touch of nature indoors, in unexpected and ultimately cheerful ways. Except for neutral tones, blue is one of the easiest and most versatile hues to work with.

Society Shaker Tidewater – Willow Lane Cabinetry How do I Incorporate blue into my home?

Cool blues are the perfect choice for bedrooms or bathrooms, while warm blues work well in living rooms and dining rooms. Pair blue walls with crisp white trim for the most visual impact. In the kitchen, opt for blue canisters, dinnerware, linens, or small appliances, such as stand mixers and pop-up toasters. Or make a beautiful statement with blue kitchen cabinets! Willow Lane Cabinetry offers both the Roosevelt and Society Shaker Collections in Tidewater Blue for a uniquely lovely focal point in your kitchen. Not ready to take the plunge with all blue kitchen cabinets? Kitchen island trends point to mixing and matching finishes, so you can easily pair classic white cabinets with a kitchen island in Tidewater Blue.

Set a beautiful and relaxing tone in your home by including a touch of blue. Whether you opt for a little or a lot, you can’t go wrong with this timeless yet trendy hue!

Pimp Out Your Kitchen Island With These 4 Easy Summer Party Dips

Dips are a must for the summer party season because they are easy to prepare and share! Put your kitchen island to good use by blending appetizing ingredients together and presenting them for all to enjoy — creating a buffet station is one of the top kitchen island trends! Perfect for potlucks and casual summer celebrations, these easy and tasty dips are a guaranted  way to get the party started. Read on to find out the easiest summer party dips, from two of our favorite celebrity foodies, and make your home the place to gather this summer!

Back Bean DipSome Like It Hot

Clinton Kelley from ABC’s The Chew is known as the expert on stylish entertaining. His Smokey Black Bean Dip puts a spin on tradition with 2 cans of drained and rinsed black beans, 2 tablespoons of olive oil, 1 chipotle in adobo plus 1 teaspoon of puree. Add 1 clove of peeled garlic, 1 teaspoon of cumin, and the juice of 1 lime. Blend your ingredients in a food processor until smooth and creamy. Scoop into a serving bowl and add ½ cup of peeled and diced jicama with ½ cup of plain Greek yogurt. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Garnish with ¼ cup of queso fresco (or jack cheese), 2 teaspoons of fresh cilantro, 2 limes (cut into wedges), and whole-wheat tortilla chips. This dip is so versatile that you can also use as a spread for sandwiches or quesadillas too!

For a less spicy option, try Clinton Kelly’s Triple Threat Party Dip. Elements of spinach, artichoke, and cream cheese fuse together and will leave you wanting more – and then some! Although it takes a bit more preparation, it’s well worth the wait and is still simple to make. Heat 3 tablespoons of butter and 2 diced onions in a large sauté pan for about 30 minutes or until caramelized, then place your onions into a bowl to cool. In a separate bowl, stir together 1 block of cream cheese and 1 box of defrosted spinach with salt and pepper. Heat your skillet to a medium-high heat and add ½ cup of halved artichokes for about five minutes, or until charred. Remove to a bowl and chop. Char ½ cup of diced red bell peppers in your skillet, then dice and combine with ¼ cup of red pepper jelly in a bowl. Add onions, spinach, cream cheese, artichokes, and red pepper jelly together for the perfect mixture. Serve at room temperature with crostinis.

Some Like It Chilled

Food Network Star and Celebrity Chef Bobby Flay have exciting twists on chilled dips that are perfect for summer gatherings. Guacamole is a party staple that can be made quickly for impromptu get-togethers, and Bobby Flay’s Guacamole recipe is chock full of seasonal herbs and veggies that will wow your guests. Mix ¼ cup of fresh cilantro, 3 tablespoons of diced red onions, 3 tablespoons of canola oil, 3 avocados, the juice of 2 limes and one or two diced jalapenos depending on your heat preference. Blend the ingredients together in a bowl using a fork, but not for too long since guacamole should be chunky. Season with salt and pepper to taste and serve chilled with tortilla chips.

Spicy HummusJust because a dip is served cold doesn’t mean it can’t have some heat! Bobby Flay’s Spicy Crushed Hummus is easy to make, and can be served with pita chips, and fresh summer veggies for dipping. Heat one tablespoon of canola oil in a sauté pan over medium heat. Add 4 cloves of chopped garlic and 1 diced jalapeno and cook for about two minutes. Put 3 cups of chickpeas in a food processor and add the garlic and jalapeno, plus 3 tablespoons of olive oil, 1 teaspoon of toasted sesame oil, and the juice of 1 lemon and blend until smooth. If it’s too thick you can add another tablespoon of olive oil. Finally, add another cup of chickpeas into the food processor and pulse; making sure your dip stays chunky. Scoop your hummus into a serving bowl and garnish with a teaspoon of paprika and a tablespoon of fresh chopped parsley.

How To Prep Your Walls For Painting

There are a few steps between picking out that perfect wall color and painting. You may have a million home and kitchen design ideas running through your mind, and you are probably anxious to get started. We get that! And while paint is probably the easiest and most affordable way to change the look of a room, before you even think about opening that can of paint you need to prep. From swatches and tools, to priming and painting, get ready to roll with these helpful tips from Willow Lane Cabinetry.

Color It Beautiful

Before you choose the color, narrow it down to one or two shades and buy a sample or two. Most paint stores sell quart-sized cans that allow you to test colors out on your walls before investing in multiple gallons. Paint large swatches around the room to see how the color looks in different lighting throughout the day and night, and how it flows with adjoining rooms. As patchy as it may look, live with the sample swatches for a few days before making your final decision. Once you settle on that perfect color for your space, figure out how much paint you need based on square footage. Round up so you have enough to save for touch ups — besides, the last thing you want to have happen is to run out of paint mid-job. Most quality paints are self-priming, but if you are going for a big color change such as deep red to pale gray, you will want to prime first.

Blue Painter's TapeGather Your Tools

In addition to enough paint, you will need drop cloths, painter’s tape, spackling paste, a putty knife, medium grit sandpaper, a screwdriver, rags, a small bucket of clean water, a metal roller tray with a disposable plastic liner for easy cleanup, a 9-inch roller and sleeve, and of course paintbrushes. We recommend a two and a half inch angled, synthetic bristle brush for cutting in, and a smaller angled brush for tight places.

Prep For Success

Now that you have your paint and tools at the ready, it’s time to remove any pictures, and all the outlet and light-switch covers from the walls to be painted. Take lamps and breakables to a safe location in another room, and then move the furniture to the center of the room if possible. Cover the furniture with plastic drop cloths, and line the floors with carboard or canvas drop cloths to protect from spills, drips and splatters. Patch any holes or cracks in the walls. Allow the spackle to dry before sanding smooth, and cleaning any dust with a damp rag. Using painter’s tape, tape around the ceiling, windows, baseboards, floors, chair rails, and trim to easily ensure crisp edges.

Now it’s time to get painting and enjoy your beautiful new space!

How To Paint The Hardwood Floors In Your Home

Give your home new life and paint old solid wood floors in exchange for the mess of refinishing them. You can easily transform your kitchen with a little know-how, time, and a pinch of patience. But beware — You may just want new kitchen cabinets to match your beautiful painted floor when all is said and done! Here are a few tips to help you get started on your new space:

Prep The Surface

While it may sound time-consuming, scuff-sanding the floor can be done in no time. Use 150-grit sandpaper to rough up the surface just enough so that the primer well adhere well to the surface.

Clean The Floors

Give your floors a good once over and vacuum up dust in every crevice you can find. Use clear water to help clean the harder to reach areas. Make sure all of the flooring has a proper chance to dry before moving on to the next step. If any moisture is left present the primer is more likely to bubble up — not something anyone wants!

Prepare The Primer

Search for a penetrating, oil-based primer to help seal the surface up tight. Another option is to find a good latex primer. Speak with your local paint store about options and make sure they understand you are using the paint for your flooring and not your walls. If you use latex paint, use a latex primer; if you use oil paint, use an oil primer. Patience is important with floor painting. Let it dry at least overnight, and if using oil, give it a good 24 hours or more to dry completely.

Sand Again

Now that the areas have been primed, sand again, this time using 220-grit sandpaper. Vacuum up the newly sanded area and use a tack cloth to ensure all dust is up off of the floor.

Checker Pattern Painted Floor Color Time

Now it is time to have a little fun! You can choose to use all one color, or if you want to create a pattern, use painter’s tape to add shapes or patterns in a second color. Using a brush or a roller, apply a very thin coat of paint with a ¼-nap microfiber roller or natural bristle brush.

Search Pinterest, magazines or online photos for unique ideas. Your friends will be ultra impressed that you painted your unique flooring design all yourself!

Dry and Repeat

Once everything has dried for at least 24 hours, you can add two more thin coats of color, with 24 hours of dry time in between. Paint on each coat as thinly as possible to avoid air bubbles, and ensure the paint cures well to the floor.

Topcoat Time

Use a polyurethane clear coat to ensure long-term durability. Look for low or no-VOC paints to minimize fumes. Once again, wait at least 24 hours between coats if you decide to do more than one layer of your topcoat.

Wait To Walk

Wait another day or two before walking on the new floor, and even then make sure it’s only in socks. The longer the floor is allowed to cure, the harder your finish will be.

With just a few easy steps you can give your flooring a unique makeover and create a brand new look for your home. Contact your local paint shop for tips and paint recommendations and enjoy getting started!

9 Cornerstones of a Cottage Style Kitchen or Bath

Cottage style decorating lends itself perfectly to kitchens and baths. From kitchen cabinets to accessories and everything in between, create a warm and inviting space with these nine cornerstones of a cottage style kitchen or bath.

Cabinetry

White kitchen cabinets are the obvious choice for a cottage style kitchen. The same holds true for bathrooms with white bathroom vanities. But like white, pastel colors are also key to cottage style; so don’t be afraid to add a pop of color to your cabinetry in shades of pale sage, khaki, dove gray, or tidewater blue. Stick with the clean lines of Shaker cabinets or classic raised-panel cabinets for a timeless cottage look.

Shelves in a Cottage KitchenOpen Shelving and Glass Front Cabinet Doors

Open shelving and glass front cabinet doors allow you to showcase pretty pottery, dishes and colorful vintage glassware, all quintessential to a cottage home. For a true cottage look, opt for simple brackets and corbels that are painted white to hold up shelves.

Hardware for Kitchen Cabinets and Bathroom Vanities

Complete bathroom and kitchen cabinetry with charming glass or ceramic knobs on doors, and bin pulls on drawers in complimentary brass, chrome, or brushed nickel finishes.

Apron Front Sinks

Apron front sinks are key to a cottage kitchen, and the perfect place to wash garden-grown, seasonal fruits and vegetables. Opt for deep kitchen sinks in copper or stainless steel.

Wood or Tile Flooring

When it comes to flooring in a cottage kitchen or bath, either wide or narrow plank wood will do, as long as it’s a painted or stained in a finish that fits your theme. You can’t go wrong with natural red oak or maple. If you prefer a darker stain, go with a worn patina, and keep furniture and cabinets light. For tile floors in the bath, choose small white penny-round or hexagon ceramic tiles, checkerboard patterns, or light gray or beige limestone.

Beautiful Backsplash Tile

Classic white subway tile fits perfectly in a cottage kitchen or bath when used as a backsplash or shower surround.

Window and Wall Dressings

Whether café or full-height, plantation shutters are a must for cottage kitchens to keep things light and airy. Small-paned glass windows with gingham or feminine floral valances are also cottage staples. Keep walls pale pastel colors in shades of cream, blue, sage green, yellow, or pink, with oversized baseboards, crown molding, and beaded board wainscoting in crisp white.

Cottage Style Kitchen FurnishingsComfortably Unique Furnishings

Every cottage home needs a unique vintage piece or two. Shop flea markets for that perfect, one-of-a-kind item, like a painted farmhouse table, caned chairs, or an antique pie safe. Cottage furnishings should be comfortable and inviting, and have a distressed patina that shows age.

Cottage Accessories

Pedestal sinks and claw foot tubs are the ultimate accessories for a cottage bath. Adorn kitchens with wicker baskets, ceramic or enameled canisters, milk glass vases full of fresh flowers, pretty table linens, and vintage country treasures collected over time.
