The winter season brings everyone home for the holidays. Whether you are hosting a Thanksgiving feast, housing out of town guests for Christmas, or planning a New Year’s Eve party, you will want your home to look its best for the festivities. From freshening up a guest bathroom, to creating a cozy kitchen with plenty of seating, here are three ways to spruce up your home for holiday guests.
Put your best bathroom forward.
Chances are your guests will need to use the restroom while visiting your home. With that said, your guest bathroom should be clean and tidy at all times, since you never know who will drop by with some holiday cheer. This is no easy task when dealing with the small space of a typical powder room or guest bath.
Many powder rooms have a pedestal sink and zero storage solutions. It’s wise to replace a bathroom vanity that lacks storage for something useful (and beautiful at the same time). If you love your pedestal sink, and would prefer to keep it, consider installing a small cabinet above the toilet to house toiletries and an extra roll of toilet paper.
If your guests will be staying for an extended period of time, they will also need access to a full bath. You should equip your guest bathroom with fresh towels, holiday-scented soaps, and other necessities like a hair dryer, shampoo, and toothpaste. Figure out how to organize your bathroom vanity so everything is accessible and easy to find. It’s the small details that make a difference.
Create a comfortable sleeping space.
Overnight visitors will also need a place to sleep. For some, that will be a sofa bed, while for others that might mean a private guest suite. Either way, the goal is to make your guests feel as comfortable as possible.
Winter nights can get chilly, so keep extra blankets and quilts nearby, and make sure you have plenty of pillows on hand. Leave a few empty drawers and some hangers to accommodate clothing, and purchase a small luggage rack. Place an alarm clock near the bed, a lamp, and maybe a few books or local magazines to read. Regardless of the space you have, it should feel like a home away from home thanks to your thoughtfulness.
Make your kitchen the heart of the home.
Everyone tends to gather around the kitchen, especially during the holiday season. Make your kitchen an inviting space, with plenty of chairs to accommodate guests. Bar stools are great additions to a kitchen island and can offer the extra seating you need.
Make sure kitchen cabinets are fully stocked with glassware, coffee mugs, dinner plates, and dessert plates. Also, make sure your drawers have enough utensils to set a table of at least twelve. Stock your pantry cabinet with snack items, beverages, and hot chocolate for impromptu carolers who may ring your bell. The holidays are a time of giving, so give your guests the gift of an open house and a warm welcome.
